Thank
you.
It
is
a
great
pleasure
for
the
very
first
time
as
Premier
to
welcome
the
honorable
Danielle
Smith
to
the
legislative
rotunda.
As
the
premier
and
a
member
of
the
legislative
assembly,
The
Honorable
Darren
billis
MLA
for
Edmonton
Beverly
clairview
will
be
joining
us
today
on
behalf
of
the
leader
of
the
opposition,
Alexander
denalenko,
the
council,
general
of
Ukraine
in
Edmonton,
Arisha
Boychuk,
the
president
of
Ukrainian
Canadian
count
Congress,
Alberta,
provincial
Council
and
Greta
Darris.
B
B
Between
1932
and
1933,
the
Soviet
state
imposed
food
requisitions
caused
Mass
starvation.
They
prevented
Ukrainian
businesses
and
markets
from
receiving
shipments
of
food
from
elsewhere
to
ease
the
suffering.
Those
who
tried
to
leave
the
region
in
search
of
food
quickly
found
that
all
exits
had
been
closed
and
their
departure
was
denied.
There
was
no
Escape.
B
B
We
bring
attention
to
this
atrocity
and
we
recognize
the
struggles
endured
by
victims
and
their
descendants.
We
honor
the
resilience,
the
perseverance
and
the
spirit
of
the
Ukrainian
people,
many
of
whom
Now
call
Alberta
home
today.
Sadly,
another
generation
of
ukrainians
are
enduring
hardship
due
to
the
invasion
of
the
warmonger,
Vladimir,
Putin
and
Russian
forces.
B
B
C
Mr
billis
Mr
denaleko,
Ms,
Boychuk,
Ms,
Darris
and
Mr
Leonard
kuonic.
Thank
you
all
for
being
here
today.
90
years
ago,
the
world
witnessed
an
attempted
genocide
against
the
Ukrainian
people
through
a
forced
famine
imposed
by
the
depraved
and
evil
stalinist
regime.
In
the
ensuing
decades.
The
proud
people
of
Ukraine
fought
for
justice,
but
just,
as
importantly,
they
fought
for
recognition
and
Remembrance
about
the
horrors
of
halodemore.
As
far
too
many
people
chose
to
look
the
other
way,
albertans
chose
to
stand
with
the
people
of
Ukraine.
C
We
will
not
let
others
whitewash
the
horrors
of
the
halodemore
and
14
years
ago.
We
enshrined
it
into
law
through
the
Ukrainian
famine
and
genocide,
hello
to
Memorial
Day
act.
Today,
of
course,
the
people
of
Ukraine
are
once
again
facing
depravity
and
evil
from
those
who
would
deny
their
right
to
exist
and
they
are
inspiring
the
world,
but
by
not
only
staring
down
this
evil,
but
by
fighting
back
and
once
again,
they
can
count
on
the
steadfast
support
of
albertans
and
our
Ukrainian
Community
here
at
home.
C
B
D
D
D
D
For
two
horrendous
years,
the
Soviet
government
used
starvation
as
a
political
weapon,
forcing
ukrainians
to
comply
and
conform
under
Stalin's
rule.
This
campaign
of
Terror
attempted
to
dissolve
any
sense
of
Ukrainian
culture,
Community
or
nationalism,
but
Stalin
failed.
He
underestimated
the
resilience
of
the
Ukrainian
people,
their
Spirit
was
not
broken
and
their
culture
did
not
disappear.
D
Today,
ukrainians
are
again
fighting
for
their
lives,
their
culture
and
their
Homeland,
with
Putin's
Russian
State
attempting
to
do
what
Stalin's
Soviets
could
not
the
Ukrainian
people
continue
to
show
resiliency.
Despite
experiencing
one
of
the
greatest
hardships
since
the
whole
of
tomorrow,
November
26th
is
hold
tomorrow,
Memorial
Day
in
Alberta.
D
D
We
all
have
a
part
to
play
in
protecting
human
rights
worldwide
together.
We
must
continue
to
fight
oppression
and
the
acts
of
hate
to
ensure
that
tragedies
of
this
proportion
never
happen
again
and
as
we
reflect
on
one
of
the
darkest
times
in
history,
let
us
stand
with
Ukrainian
people
as
they
continue
to
fight
for
their
freedom
and
their
culture
against
the
oppressive
forces
of
the
Russian
state.
D
B
Thank
you.
Member
Villas,
the
Saint
Matthews
School
crier
will
now
sing
dry
tears.
The
song
dry
tears
was
written
by
Natalia,
onishook
and
James
French,
who
are
here
with
us
today
their
goal.
In
writing.
The
song
was
to
teach
students
about
halatimore
from
the
perspective
of
school-aged
children
whose
lives
were
innocently
shaken
by
the
terrible
genocide
that
began.
A
A
E
E
That
was
the
beginning
of
the
most
tragic
page
of
the
in
history
of
Ukraine,
history
of
Ukrainian
people.
Up
to
4
million
of
ukrainians,
innocent
men,
women
children
died
from
artificial
starvation
in
one
year.
Just
imagine
almost
entire
population
of
Alberta
ukrainians
were
doomed
to
the
slow
agonizing
death
just
because
they
simply
wanted
to
be
ukrainians.
They
just
wanted
to
speak
their
native
language.
Remember
their
history
and
or
honor.
Their
Heroes
90
years
have
passed
in
that
time,
but
for
some
countries
and
some
people
nothing
has
changed.
E
We
live
in
the
21st
century.
We
are
talking
about
the
development
of
civilization,
the
value
of
human,
human
lives,
human
rights,
progress,
prosperity
and,
at
the
same
time,
Russia
is
killing
thousands
of
Ukrainian
civilians,
children
and
women
in
cult
blood,
just
as
they
killed
millions
of
ukrainians.
90
years
ago,
many
International
organizations
have
been
created.
Many
agreements
were
assigned
to
prevent
such
crimes,
but
did
they
stop
Russia
from
committing
war
crimes
and
crimes
against
humanity
in
Ukraine?
No,
they
didn't,
unfortunately,
Russia
that
did
not
care
about
international
law
about
human
rights.
E
E
This
is
a
new
genocide
of
Ukrainian
people,
which
is
repeated
90
years
after
the
holiday
more
tragedy,
and
if,
at
the
beginning
of
the
war,
Russian
officials
and
state
media
tried
to
cover
up
their
real
goals
in
this
war,
with
words
about
liberation
of
ukrainians
from
NASA's
regimes,
or
something
like
that.
Now,
they
openly
call
for
total
Destruction
of
Ukraine
as
a
country
and
total
Destruction
of
ukrainians
as
a
nation
they
are
losing
on
the
battlefields.
E
They
can't
fight
our
Defenders,
so
they
decided
to
fight
civilians.
Russia
has
deliberately
chosen
the
terrorist
and
genocide
type
of
war
against
Ukraine.
They
destroy
always
our
civil
infrastructure
schools,
hospitals,
production
facilities,
about
45
of
Ukrainian
electricity
infrastructure
has
been
destroyed
after
the
last
missile.
Massive
missile
attack
on
Ukraine
Putin
wants
to
leave
the
country
without
electricity,
water
heating.
In
the
winter
time.
E
What
is
this,
if
not
genocide,
Russian
State
media
reviews
when
they
report
that,
after
their
massive
rocket
attack,
hundreds
of
civil
ukrainians
have
been
killed
and
millions
have
been
left
without
electricity,
water
and
Heat,
and
they
call
for
even
more
bombing
of
Civilian
infrastructure
in
Ukraine
to
throw
Ukraine
back?
It's
a
quart
to
throw
Ukrainian
back
into
the
middle
aged
and
forced
us
to
surrender,
but
we
will
never
surrender.
E
This
is
the
whole
truth
about
Russia
and
its
policy
politics,
their
real
threat
to
the
whole
world.
They
must
be
stopped.
Ukraine
and
ukrainians
are
not
on
the
front
line
of
the
fight,
but
we
are
fighting
not
only
for
Ukraine.
We
are
fighting
for
the
human
values
we
all
share
for
the
security
and
stability
in
the
whole
world
and
we
badly
need
support
from
our
friends
partners
from
around
the
globe.
E
Russia
must
be
recognized
as
a
terrorist
state.
Poland
Czech
Republic,
Lithuania,
Latvia,
Estonia
and
yesterday
NATO
parliamentary
assembly
have
already
done
it
and
we
call
on
Canada
to
do
the
same
to
recognize
Russia
as
a
terrorist
State.
We
need
military
and
humanitarian
support.
We
have
to
protect
our
people
from
Russian
terrorist
attacks
and
give
them
possibility
to
survive
the
winter
time.
E
We
are
very
grateful
to
Alberta
to
Alberta's
government,
to
Ukrainian
Community
here
and
to
all
albertans
who
stand
with
Ukraine
since
the
beginning
of
the
war.
Alberta
has
showed
strong
and
continuous
support
for
Ukraine
for
ukrainians,
providing
millions
of
dollars,
funds
to
purchase
and
send
crucial
equipment,
medical
and
humanitarian
Aid
to
Ukraine,
Alberta,
Government,
Ukrainian,
community
and
other
organizations
also
provide
strong
support
to
the
thousands
of
ukrainians,
who
came
here
to
Alberta
fleeing
the
horror
of
the
Russian
war.
Thank
you
very
much,
but
Ukraine
still
needs
more
support.
E
Russians
are
still
destroying
our
country
and
killing
our
people.
So
please
stand
with
us
and
try
to
and
help
us
as
much
as
you
can
internal
memory
to
the
innocent
victims
of
the
holodomor,
the
civilians,
civilian
victims
of
Russian
war
crimes
in
Ukraine
and
the
Defenders
of
Ukraine
who
died
to
protect
our
land
and
stop
Russian
atrocity
foreign.
F
F
On
behalf
of
the
Ukrainian
Canadian
Congress
and
the
Ukrainian
community
in
Alberta,
I
am
honored
to
be
here
today
to
both
commemorate
those
who
have
lost
their
lives
and
in
this
senseless
genocide
in
Ukraine's
history,
and
to
express
to
the
government
of
Alberta
our
gratitude
for
accepting
developing
and
recognizing
annually
the
Ukrainian
famine
and
genocide.
Memorial
Day
Act
Alberta
is
home
to
more
than
375
000
individuals
of
Ukrainian
Heritage
Alberta
has
been
a
leader
in
helping
our
community.
F
Let
the
world
know
we
have
not
and
will
not
forget
the
single
greatest
catastrophe
endured
by
Ukraine
during
Soviet
rule
the
whole
of
the
mod.
This
was
not
just
a
general
tragedy
tragedy
of
the
ERA.
This
was
part
of
Stalin's
campaign
against
Ukrainian
national
nationalism.
This
was
Murder
By
starvation
in
1953
Rafael
lemkin,
known
as
the
father
of
the
United
Nations
convention
on
genocide,
described
1932
and
33
famine
in
Soviet
Ukraine
as
a
classic
example
of
Soviet
genocide.
F
He
went
on
and
said
if
the
Soviet
program
succeeds
completely.
If
the
Intelligentsia,
the
priests
The
Peasants,
can
be
eliminated,
Ukraine
will
be
as
dead
as
every
Ukrainian
were
killed
for
it
will
have
lost
that
part
of
which
has
kept
and
developed
its
culture,
its
beliefs,
its
common
values,
its
ideas
which
have
guided
it
and
given
it
a
soul
which,
in
short,
made
it
a
nation.
F
This
is
not
simply
a
case
of
mass
murder,
it
is
a
case
of
genocide,
of
the
destruction
not
of
individuals
only
but
of
but
of
the
culture
and
the
nation.
However,
Ukraine's
culture,
its
beliefs,
its
common
ideas,
which
have
guided
it
and
given
it
a
soul,
has
endured
at
the
height
of
holodomor.
The
ukrainians
were
dieting
at
a
rate
of
25
000
per
day,
one
thousand
per
hour
17
per
minute.
F
Events
like
today
will
serve
as
reminders
that
the
world
that
Canadians
and
albertans
know
differently
historical
realities
which
are
well
documented,
and
events
like
today
help
to
educate
to
ensure
that
genocides
are
no
longer
a
part
of
world
history
on
the
con
on
this
content
continent.
Any
continent,
the
first
ukrainians
to
draw
attention
to
the
tragedy
of
the
holy
war
were
survivors
who
fled
to
the
West.
They
were
initially
dismissed
by
much
of
the
western
political
intellectual
establishments.
F
Nonetheless,
they
continued
their
efforts
in
the
decades
that
followed
and
all
of
them,
those
who
have
now
passed
and
those
who
still
are
with
us,
Arc
Ukrainian
Community.
Our
society
owes
you
a
great
debt
of
gratitude
for
your
persistence
and
ability
to
continue
reliving
a
time
of
your
life
I'm.
Certain
you
would
sooner
forget.
F
The
irony
today
is
that
Russia
wages
War
a
barbaric
war
on
Ukraine,
committing
heinous
crimes
against
humanity
and
continues
to
perpetuate
a
genocide
on
Ukraine
by
randomly
bombing
civilians,
purposely
destroying
infrastructure,
cutting
off
electricity
and
water.
As
the
world
watches
Russia
is
creating
yet
another
genocide
in
Ukraine.
F
B
I
think
you,
you
know
times
have
been
very
challenging
for
members
of
the
Ukrainian
community
and
I
know
that
that
has
created
an
extra
strain
on
the
services
that
the
council
General
provides,
as
well
as
the
great
work
that
the
Ukrainian
Canadian,
Congress
does
and
so
I
think.
It's
important
that
we
take
a
moment
just
to
say
an
extra
special
thank
you
to
Mr,
denalenko
and
Ms
Boychuk
for
all
of
the
extra
hard
work
and
tireless
hours
that
they
are
putting
in
to
serving
their
people.
G
Today
we
remember
a
most
somber
and
tragic
historical
period
for
the
people
of
Ukraine,
as
well
as
for
all
Ukrainian
communities
in
Canada
and
around
the
world.
The
famine,
genocide
of
1932
and
1933,
known
as
holodomor
words,
such
as
historical
period,
although
respectfully
expressed,
cannot
fully
engulf
the
orchestrated,
deliberate
Famine
of
millions
of
innocent
ukrainians
who
perished
at
the
hands
of
Joseph
Joseph
Stalin's
Soviet
totalitarian
regime.
G
Stalin
was
determined
to
exterminate
the
Ukrainian
people
and,
along
with
them
their
language,
culture
will
and
identity
holodomor.
Although
ruthless
and
inhuman
did
not
totally
annihilate
the
Ukrainian
people,
those
who
survived
exhibited
extraordinary
resilience,
astounding
courage,
remarkable
perseverance,
as
well
as
incredible
physical
and
emotional
strength.
G
It
is
these
redeeming
qualities
that
have
seen
the
Ukrainian
people
through
holodomor,
the
second
world
war,
as
well
as
post-war
Soviet
oppression,
Ukrainian
regained
its
freedom
in
1991
only
to
confront
challenges
in
the
21st
century,
the
most
recent
and
largest
being
the
Russian
invasion
of
Ukraine
on
February

of
this

the

his
voice
to
the

of
his

defending
their

rights
and
dignity.
G
Although
written
in
1845,
one
can
see
how
chefchenko's
words
are
Timeless
and
prophetic.
Today
the
Ukrainian
people
have
displayed
in
the
past
and
continue
to
exhibit
unbelievable
strength,
Stellar
courage,
resilience
and
heroism,
as
they
