A
Hi
I'm
menika
monk-
and
this
is
the
Anne
Arundel
County
Board
of
Education
meeting
recap.
Where
we'll
give
you
a
brief
rundown
of
the
board's
most
recent
actions
and
what
happened
at
the
December
16th
board
of
education
meeting.
Just
in
case,
you
missed
it
with
a
focus
on
the
people
who
worked
so
hard
for
our
students,
school
superintendent,
dr.
George,
our
lotto
recommended
a
one
point:
14
billion
dollar
fiscal
year,
2017
operating
budget.
A
The
plan
includes
15.5
million
dollars
to
provide
full
step,
increases
to
all
eligible
employees
and
an
equivalent
increase
for
employees
not
represented
by
bargaining
units.
It
also
includes
3.2
million
dollars
for
33
new
teaching
positions
to
break
even
with
ongoing
enrollment
increases
and
10
additional
teaching
positions.
To
begin
to
assist
in
the
goal
to
reduce
growing
class
sizes
on
Arundel
County
Public
Schools
has
grown
by
more
than
7,000
students
in
the
last
10
years.
The
recommendation
also
includes
15
million
dollars
to
replenish
the
school
systems.
A
To
enhance
the
stem
programs
at
Glendale
and
central
middle
schools.
On
the
issue
of
school
start
times,
dr.
a
lot
o
included
8.1
million
dollars
to
shift
school
start
and
dismissal
times
in
August
2017.
The
funding
would
be
combined
with
the
six
hundred
two
thousand
dollars
allocated
by
the
County
Council
this
year
to
enact
a
plan
that
would
see
high
school
started,
830am
Middle
School's
begin
no
earlier
than
930
a.m.
and
elementary
schools
open
between
750
and
915
am
no
school
would
dismiss
later
than
415
p.m.
A
dr.
alado
said
he
arrived
at
the
recommendation,
which
will
be
discussed
at
a
series
of
community
meetings
in
January
and
or
early
februari,
because
a
multi-year
plan
to
shift
start
in
dismissal
times
would
be
difficult
from
a
consistency
of
funding
standpoint
and
because
some
schools
would
have
to
shift
hours
two
or
three
times
shifting
school
hours
in
August
of
2017
provides
time
for
funding
to
be
in
place
and
for
the
necessary
additional
buses
to
be
acquired
by
contractors.
A
He
also
emphasized
that
the
funding
to
shift
school
hours
must
be
in
place
before
any
changes
would
occur
and
urge
the
county
executive
and
county
council
not
to
take
it
from
other
areas
of
the
budget.

Dr.
alotta
recommended
a
250
5.6
million
dollar
capital
budget
to
the
board.
A
The
capital
budget
is
ninety-five
point,
seven
million
dollars
more
than
the
one
approved
by
the
board
in
September.
Almost
all
of
that
increase
is
allocated
to
the
pursuit
of
a
federal
government.
Grant
that
would
provide
funding
for
renovations
at
meet
high
school.
The
school
system
would
only
do
the
work
if
it
is
funded
through
