Monarch Global Academy Public Contract School eighth-grade social studies teacher Heather Carnaghan, a 13-year teaching veteran, was named the 2017-18 Anne Arundel County Public Schools Teacher of the Year at tonight’s 32nd annual Excellence in Education Awards.
The surprise announcement was the culminating moment at the event, presented annually in partnership by Anne Arundel County Public Schools and the Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce. Lauren Rimando, who teaches middle school math at Annapolis Area Christian School, was named Independent Schools Teacher of the Year.
“What I walk into a room with is years and years of building up to that moment,” Carnaghan told the crowd minutes after her name was announced. “I just want to say that the years and years and years that I have worked with educators like everyone in this room is what made it possible to be in this spot.”
A National Board Certified Teacher, Carnaghan is the first charter or contract school teacher to win the award, which has been given annually since 1987. She will compete for Maryland State Teacher of the Year, an honor that will be announced next fall.
Forty-eight educators from public and private schools were recognized during the event. Other finalists for this year’s Public Schools Teacher of the Year honor were: Cherryll Clacks, the Triple-E teacher at Van Bokkelen Elementary School; Katherine Gardner, a physical education teacher at Marley Elementary School; Pamela Klink, a culinary arts teacher at the Center of Applied Technology – South; and Marlene Kramer, an art teacher at Southern High School.
Christine O’Neill of St. Mary’s Elementary School was the other finalist for Independent Schools Teacher of the Year.
Called “the teacher that parents hope and dream of for our children” by one parent, Carnaghan believes that the culture of a school is a key in student success. Therefore, she spends significant time mentoring students and staff to build a great sense of community. In her four years at Monarch, Carnaghan has taught kindergarten, third grade, and eighth grade.
“In each grade level, she has consistently demonstrated her effectiveness as a teacher through her strong example, tireless work ethic, and high expectations for her students, fellow staff members, and herself,” Monarch Principal Donna O’Shea wrote in her nomination of Carnaghan.

Hello, welcome to the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Digest bringing you news about the people and programs of Anne Arundel County Public Schools.
Here’s an end-of-school year roundup with plenty examples of AACPSAwesome!
Thirty high school seniors from several county high schools – public and private – were recently recognized for their hard work through the highly-regarded Scholarships for Scholars program. Giving away more than $100,000 in scholarships this year, the program recently honored the students for their excellence, diligence, and commitment to their studies and the community. Of course, such support from the program is much appreciated by the students.
With fanfare and flare, nearly 50 educators were celebrated at the 32nd annual Excellence in Education awards dinner. (SOT – Burdon) While the event culminates in the naming of the public and independent schools teacher of the year, it is also an exciting time for hundreds of educators and community members to come together to commemorate and reflect on the important work that they do every day. This year’s public school Teacher of the Year honor was bestowed upon Monarch Global Academy’s Heather Carnaghan who is elated to represent her colleagues. Lauren Rimando of Annapolis Area Christian School was humbled to receive the Independent School Teacher of the Year. The evening of celebration is annually presented by AACPS and the Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce and also recognizes top business partners. Carnaghan will now represent county public school teachers as the school system’s nominee for Maryland Teacher of the Year to be announced this fall.
Winning the Crystal Apple Award for her tireless dedication to the schools in North County, Michelle Fowler was one of many shining stars celebrated at this year’s Volunteer Recognition Tea, hosted by the Office of School and Family Partnerships. The Tea annually honors the tens of thousands of volunteers who commit hundreds of thousands of hours to do the intangible things that keep our schools running and students achieving.
Madison Strempek of Crofton Middle School was recently recognized for her own volunteerism. Madison was recently named the national winner of the Prudential Spirit of Community Award which comes with a gold medallion, crystal trophy for her school, a $5,000 personal award, and a $5,000 grant to give to a non-profit of her choice. In a surprise presentation at her school, Madison showed another act of selflessness by giving the grant to her school.
In a unique event that county STEM students will likely never forget, two astronauts aboard the International Space Station spoke to the students through a live link event with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). For about 20 minutes, astronauts Ricky Arnold (from Arnold, MD) and Drew Feustel answered questions from the student audience comprised of all of the county’s STEM magnet middle and high school students. Other special guests included Arnold’s parents who provided added a nice personal perspective to the event. The live link experience was a part of a full day of activities focused on the theme, “NASA has something for everyone.”
Glen Burnie High School’s mural club recently unveiled the largest mural among the school’s many impressive artworks. After much collaboration with the school’s English department, a 95-foot mural depicting some of the world’s most inspirational and intriguing authors and poets and images of their literary ideas, the mural is an amazing three and a half month feat.
First-year teachers from the 2017-2018 school year recently gathered to reflect on their rookie years. Part of the school system’s Right Start Teacher Support Program, the reflection is also a celebration of educators and their very important commitment to students.

Hello and welcome to the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Digest, bringing you news about the people and programs of Anne Arundel County Public Schools.
South River High School teacher Josh Carroll was recently named the 2017-18 Maryland Teacher of the Year by the Maryland State Department of Education! The announcement by State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Salmon culminated a brilliant six-month run for Carroll, who was named Anne Arundel County Public Schools Teacher of the Year in April and a finalist for the state award in September. Carroll has spent 18 years in Anne Arundel County Public Schools, all at the high school level. He is now a nominee for the National Teacher of the Year award.
The students in the county’s junior ROTC programs had an unforgettable and unique experience as they witnessed the hoisting of the flag of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. Junior cadets from AACPS were inspired to meet many of the medal recipients. The raising of the flag is in anticipation of the Society’s annual convention to be held in Annapolis in September 2018.
The school system continues to thrive in large part because of the generosity of community partners. And Baltimore Gas and Electric is the latest example of how much our community cares about our students. Through the donation of special technology, more students who cannot physically attend school now have the ability to still participate in school activities. The technology allows the student’s face to be seen on a tablet screen that is attached to a robotic stand with a wheel which is remotely controlled. Students who use the robot are not only able to take part in instruction, but enjoy an entire school day with their peers. A few other students around the county have been able to benefit from this groundbreaking concept and resource.
The students and staff of Monarch Academy Annapolis Public Contract School had much to celebrate during the ribbon cutting celebration of their newly-renovated and modernized facility operated by the Children’s Guild. The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by a host of elected and school officials in honor of the second contract school in the county and another academic option for students in Annapolis. The school brings together many students from throughout Annapolis in exciting atmosphere where learning is still at the forefront. The school serves about 580 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
A crowd of Glen Burnie High School supporters recently gathered pay tribute to one a community member who - for decades - has made a positive impact on many students, educators, volunteers, and residents. In a surprise ceremony, local businessman and volunteer Mike Phennicie watched the unveiling of wing in the school dedicated to innovation and Excellence in Community-Based Leadership & Volunteerism. Phennicie will soon be leaving the area for retirement.
