B
Hello
and
welcome
to
the
anne
arundel
county
public
schools
digest
bringing
you
news
about
the
people
and
programs
of
anne
arundel
county
public
schools.
It's
the
event
of
the
year,
educators
from
across
the
county
gather
together
to
celebrate
each
other
and
to
crown
one
of
their
own.
As
teacher
of
the
year,
this
year's
honor
went
to
severna
park
elementary
school
fifth
grade
teacher
jenny
merrill
at
the
29th
annual
excellence
in
education
awards
dinner.
C
D
B
Catherine
claise
markey,
a
social
studies
teacher
at
archbishop
spalding
school,
was
named
private
school
teacher
of
the
year.
The
evening
of
celebration
is
annually
presented
by
aacps
and
the
annapolis
and
anne
arundel
county
chamber
of
commerce
merrill
will
now
represent
county
public
school
teachers
as
the
school
system's
nominee
for
maryland
teacher
of
the
year
to
be
announced.
This
fall.
B
In
celebration
of
lakeshore
elementary
school
becoming
the
county's
17th,
maryland
blue
ribbon
school
of
excellence,
state
superintendent,
lillian
lowery,
county
superintendent,
george
arlatto
and
county
executive,
steve
schue
and
other
guests
visited
the
school
to
formally
congratulate
the
school's
talented
students,
dedicated
staff
and
amazing
community
members
who
work
together
to
earn
the
distinction.
We.

B
H
Personally,
by
telling
me
the
goals
I
need
to
set
and
helping
me
in
school,
because
I
will
be
actually
the
first
person
in
my
family
to
go
to
college
and
I
don't
really
have
anyone
to
look
up
to,
and
you
know
tell
me
the
things
I
need
to
know
about
college
and
avid
has
helped
me
these
three
years,
like
totally
get
me
on
track,
know
what
I
have
to
do
when
I
get
in
high
school.
That's
why
I'm
going
to
be
in
avid
in
high
school,
because
avid
has
actually
been
my
foundation
of
success.
More.
B
Than
5
000
students
currently
participate
in
avid
county-wide
31
12th
grade
students
from
10
county
high
schools
and
two
private
high
schools
recently
received
scholarships
through
the
highly
regarded
scholarships
for
scholars
program,
giving
away
138
thousand
dollars
in
scholarships.
The
program
recently
honored
the
students
for
their
excellence,
diligence
and
commitment
to
the
community.
D
And
what
I'm
most
happy
about
besides
their
accomplishments,
is
that
we
as
a
school
system
you
as
parents,
our
teachers,
our
principals
and
our
community,
that
have
wrapped
our
arms
around
these
students
is
we
give
them
an
opportunity
to
shine
and,
more
often
than
not,
I
go
into
schools,
and
I
tell
students
take
the
opportunities
that
are
before
you.
This
is
clearly
an
example.
You
are
clearly
an
example
of
taking
the
opportunities
that
we've
afforded
you
and
you
run
with
them.
We
could
not
be
more
proud.
Congratulations.
B
With
increasing
college
costs,
the
awards
add
relief
of
at
least
2
500
for
each
student
and
their
parents.
Such
contributions
allow
students
to
remain
inspired
and
pursue
their
dreams.
Speaking
of
pursuing
dreams,
that's
exactly
what
county
students
in
the
performing
and
visual
arts
magnet
program
now
get
to
do
in
real
time
with
the
opening
of
the
creativity
focus
studio.
39
students
now
have
another
space
completely
dedicated
to
hone
their
artistic
abilities.
I
It
brings
together
not
only
students
and
teachers
but
guest
artists
and
arts
companies
from
all
around
the
annapolis
and
washington
baltimore
metropolitan
area.
We're
able
to
introduce
students
to
professional
artists,
they're
able
to
perform
in
studio
spaces,
just
as
they
would
in
the
real
world
and
if
they
were
out
working
on
their
own.
It's.
J
Very
rare
for
the
students
to
actually
have
a
a
dedicated
gallery
space
where
their
work
can
always
be
shown.
You
know
it's
an
amazing
resource
and
you
know
just
the
space
here.
You
the
fact
that
it's
a
dedicated
studio
and
it's
just
an
arts
building
which
allows
the
students
to
really
you
know,
push
the
limits
and
have
space,
and
you
know
not
be
interrupted
with
anything
else.
The.
B
Space
is
not
only
artfully
inspired,
but
also
community
centered,
as
an
artistic
artery
for
visiting
artists
and
other
county
students
and
residents.
Young
artists
from
germantown
elementary
school
recently
took
advantage
of
this
newest
resource
with
a
performance
that
not
only
displayed
sculptures
made
from
recyclable
materials,
but
singing
performances
in
italian
today.
L
We
have
music,
we
embrace
one
of
the
most
important
things
that
affect
humanity,
which
is
the
environment
recycling
when
you
are
able
to
combine
art
with
a
very
another,
very
important
message
like
recycling.
I
think
that
that
becomes
really
something
fundamental
for
the
lives
of
the
new
generations,
especially
for
everybody,
but
especially
for
students.
More.
B
A
The
children
to
make
choices,
our
students
make
choices,
good
choices
early
and
we're
lucky
that
dr
arlatta
comes
chief
judge.
Morrissey
comes
and
takes
time
out
of
their
schedules,
as
well
as
the
lawyers
to
come
and
just
offer
whatever
insight
we
can
to
the
students
and
that's
part
of
just
being
part
of
a
good
community
partner.
A
B
After
four
and
a
half
years
of
maneuvering
students
in
classes
and
staying
focused
on
instruction
amidst
the
clanks
of
cameras
and
the
shrills
of
drills,
the
students,
administration
staff
and
parents
of
northeast
high
school
recently
dedicated
their
newly
revitalized
school.
During
a
ribbon-cutting
ceremony
that
was
attended
by
the
likes
of
superintendent
of
schools,
george
alato
and
the
county
executive,
steve
schu,
a.
D
Building
doesn't
make
the
school,
but
certainly
when
you've
got
a
nuke
when
you've
got
a
new
building
like
this
and
it
offers
it
gives
us
a
chance
to
offer
more
programs
for
our
kids
and
the
kids
will
certainly
take
advantage
of.
Certainly
the
staff
has
it's
not
an
easy
project.
As
the
county
executive
talked
about
over
100
million
dollars,
it's
a
big
deal
for
us.
It's
our
first
new
high
school
in
many
many
years,
we've
learned
a
lot
in
building
a
new
high
school,
but
it
really
enhances
the
program.
M
B
101
million
dollar
project
added
more
than
100
thousand
square
feet
of
additional
space,
including
a
new
cafeteria
media
center
administrative
offices,
lobby,
fully
equipped
computer
labs,
video
link
security
system
and
interactive
white
boards
and
other
state-of-the-art
technology
in
every
classroom.
All
to
help
the
modern
student
be
successful.
You
know.
N
With
the
technology
upgrades-
and
you
know
in
the
and
the
onset
of
the
common
core,
they're
really
being
exposed
to
not
just
new
content
but
they're
being
exposed
to
content
in
a
much
different
way,
that
is
truly
21st
century
and
that's
huge
as
they
go
into
the
workforce
or
go
into
college
or
university
or
whether
it
be
the
community
college
or
a
work
based
program.
I
mean
it's,
it's
really
fantastic
and
the
benefits
are
just
endless.
There's.
B
D
Us
as
a
school
system,
it's
a
resource,
and
so
we're
always
looking
for
ways.
What
are
the
resources
that
we
have,
that
we
can
provide
opportunities
for
kids,
and
so,
as
I
took
the
tour
today,
I've
been
here
for
almost
two
hours
and
seen
what
we
have.
Environmentally
historically,
we've
got
the
young
kids
working
in
the
community
garden.
We've
got
our
high
school
kids
working
through
their
environmental,
their
environmental
group,
the
trust
and
and
the
preservation
of
the
house.
D
It
really
brings
lots
of
different
resources
together
and
again
providing
opportunities
for
kids
and
that's
what
I
see.
I
see
an
opportunity
to
bring
lots
of
different
kids
up
here
to
expose
them
to
things.
This
is
really
sort
of
an
oasis
in
the
middle
of
development
here
in
the
peninsula.
That
I
think,
needs
to
be
well
preserved.
Q
It's
one
thing
to
tell
children
about
the
importance
of
recycling
about
composting,
about
all
the
things
that
the
environmental
literacy
program
does
once
they
become
engaged
they'll
develop
an
ethic
more
than
just
knowledge,
they'll
develop
an
ethic
that
really
believes
and
will
carry
that
forward
into
their
adulthood.
Well,.
R
B
Turns
out,
13
is
a
lucky
number
for
the
south
river
high
school
powerhawks.
First
robotics
team.
In
its
13th
year
of
existence,
the
team
joined
the
ranks
of
the
world's
elite
by
earning
the
regional
chairman's
award
at
the
recent
new
york
tech
valley,
regional,
first
robotics
competition
in
troy,
new
york.
S
B
Power
hawks
are
the
first
county
team
to
win
the
award
considered
the
most
prestigious
in
the
scholastic
robotics
world.
The
powerhawks
are
now
qualified
to
compete
against
approximately
600
teams
in
the
four
inspiration
and
recognition
of
science
and
technology
or
first
world
championships
in
st
louis.
