From YouTube: ASP Café a Cup with Joe
Description
Dr. Joe Wieczorek talks with Mary Tilllar, Assistant Superintendent of Advanced Studies & Programs (ASP) and Dr. Kevin Hamlin, Director of ASP about the programs available to AACPS students.
A
A
C
D
B
B
A
B
I
would
have
to
say
first
advanced
studies
and
programs.
We
have
approximately
11
offices
that
coexist
in
cross-functionally
support.
Incredible
learning
for
children,
specifically
as
it
relates
to
the
programs
of
choice,
we'd
be
talking
about
the
magnet
right
specifically
with
stem
IB
and
performing
and
visual
arts,
but
I
would
also
say
we
have
program
of
choice,
instructional
programming
pathway,
options
with
both
avid
and
signature
as
well.
B
A
So
what
would
a
parent
need
to
know
then
about
the
11
offices
so
you're
thinking
about
a
parent
putting
ourselves
down
in
the
place
of
the
parents?
What
would
they
need
to
about?
It
know
about
Advanced
Studies,
our
programs
and
sort
of
how
it
fits
in
the
entire
overall
mission
or
the
goal
of
County
Public
Schools.
So.
B
And/Or
have
a
grasp
of
the
possibilities
that
can
be
provided
within
the
instructional
delivery
models,
whether
it
is
actual
courses
and
enrollment
of
courses
starting
at
the
secondary
level,
but
we
also
have
support
with
elementary,
not
programs
of
choice
per
se,
but
we
have
primary
years
program.
We
have
our
triple
u
program,
but
when
we
get
to
the
secondary
more
specifically,
they
should
understand
what
are
the
options
and
the
opportunities
afforded
to
their
children.
So.
B
Our
secondary
programs,
if
I,
were
to
start
at
middle
school.
We
have
three
programs
of
choice
and
the
magnets,
so
we
have
PBA
available
at
Bates
in
Brooklyn
Park.
We
have
some
available
at
Central,
Middle
School,
Lindo,
Middle
School
in
Old,
Mill
middle
school
South,
and
we
have
I
be
available
at
Annapolis,
middle
school,
Old,
Mill,
middle
school,
north
and
MacArthur
middle
school.
B
So
they
are
a
program
of
choice
where
an
application
process
is
initiated
each
fall
and
if
a
child
has
an
interest
with
regard
to
the
themes
or
the
dynamic
of
the
instructional
delivery
model
that
is
afforded
to
them
within
those
programs
of
choice
they
can
apply.
It
is
definitely
based
on
interest
yearning
to
explore
inquire
differently,
as
it
relates
to
their
engagement
in
the
instructional
delivery
or
a
particular
I'd,
say
talent
area
that
they
want
to
be
more
actively
involved
in
in
their
school
Jordi's.
So.
A
Since
magnets,
are
you
know,
part
of
their
near
and
dear
to
my
heart?
It's
a
the
benefit
then
to
the
to
the
parent
and
the
student
would
be
as
part
of
the
programs
of
choice.
These
would
be
choices,
they
could
look
for
they
could
they
could
go
to
their
geographic
school,
their
zoned
school.
Absolutely.
B
A
B
That
an
instructional
choice
and
additionally
through
ASP,
we
absolutely
want
to
look
at
the
child's
ability.
We
want
to
always
ensure
academic
match,
focusing
on
challenges
and
increasing
rigor
for
every
child
when
they're
able
to
really
meet
that
expectation
or
that
opportunity
with
success.
So
we
have
the
differentiated
advanced
learning
initiative
through
our
Advanced
Learning
Program
office
and
I
would
also
want
to
note
that
through
that
office
we
also
have
Co
curriculars.
So
child
may
not
want
to
leave
their
zone
school
to
go
to
a
program
of
choice
or
a
magnet
program.
B
B
A
B
E
A
B
D
B
A
high
school
middle
school
at
the
middle
school
level,
which
I
haven't
stated
yet
we
also
have
added,
which
is
advancement
via
individual
determination.
It
really
is
the
skill
set
I
say
a
pedagogical
journey.
It's
their
strategies.
Children
really
need
to
acquire
to
be
independent
thinkers
and
be
able
to
apply
their
learning
across
different
contacts
in
settings.
So
it
starts
off
in
middle
school
as
an
elective.
It's.
E
B
On-Court
option
for
children
that
really
feel
that
course
would
support
their
engagement
in
their
studies.
It
continues
through
high
school
because
we
recognize
our
goal
is
college
and
career
readiness
for
every
child
and
every
child
is
presumed
competent
and
has
the
potential
to
pursue
any
translational
goal
that
they
want
to
have.
B
Encore
are
elective
classes
or
would
be
called
elective
courses
in
high
school.
There
are
encores
designed
in
addition
to
the
core
curricular
classes
in
middle
school,
so
there's
some
option
of
choice
based
on
an
interest
as
well
as
some
KOMO
requirements.
Physical
education
as
an
example
is
a
requirement
that
we
have
in
middle
school.
A
B
B
Say
not
only
would
that
allow
them
to
see
that
information,
but
every
single
one
of
the
schools
have
a
comprehensive
page
on
signature.
So,
yes,
they
could
absolute
go
to
our
ASP
site
and
find
out
the
general
information
about
all,
but
that
will
link
them
or
connect
them
to
their
home
page
of
the
high
school,
which
would
be
either
zone
or
residence
high
school
and
they
can
find
it
even
more
information
and
we
find
that
the
home
high
school
is
also
ensure
that
the
experiences
come
alive.
B
A
B
I
would
say:
I
wouldn't
want
to
forget
that
it's
not
an
office
in
terms
of
a
programmatic
availability
for
our
family,
but
our
technology,
our
instructional
technology
partnership,
ensures
that
we
have
a
digital
footprint
and
that's
seen
across
all
our
offices.
So
we
are
blessed
to
have
the
office
of
instructional
technology
in
ASP.
They
ensure
innovation.
They
ensure
that
we
are
current.
B
They
are
looking
at
tools
not
just
for
our
adults
in
terms
of
the
delivery
of
teaching
and
learning,
but
really
ensuring
that
our
children
have
the
tools
necessary
in
a
technological
way
to
apply
their
learning,
whether
it
be
through
our
years
or
beyond,
in
their
college,
into
her
career
pursuits.
That
seems.
A
A
B
B
So
it's
with
those
connections
and
those
partnerships
bringing
in
guest
artists
are
bringing
in
institutions
of
higher
education
leaders
to
be
a
part
of
sitting,
side-by-side
mentoring,
and/or,
supporting
community
challenges
with
our
kids
that
we
evolve
our
program
because
we
want
to
make
sure
that
we
are
current
and
that
we
open
doors.
We
don't
shut
doors
well,.
D
C
A
D
F
D
E
F
Use
of
project-based
learning
inquiry,
action
and
reflection,
this
magnet
program
challenges
students
to
take
action
in
their
global
and
local
environments.
It
also
encourages
them
to
become
critical
thinkers,
effective
communicators
in
both
English
and
another
language
and
reflective
learners.
The
PVA
middle
school
program
offers
arts
infused
curriculum
for
students
interested
in
achieving
their
maximum
potential
as
an
artist.
It's
designed
to
engage
students
in
focused
arts
areas,
and
these
are
called
Prime's.
Okay,.
D
F
Qualified
teachers
and
professional
artists
to
foster
creative
inquiry,
the
STEM
program,
science,
technology,
engineering
and
math
offers
students
an
inquiry-based
interdisciplinary
setting
to
explore
diverse
subjects
of
science,
technology,
engineering
and
math.
The
program
is
designed
to
engage
students
in
stem
focused
student-centered
learning
in
an
environment
where
passion,
self-discipline
and
collaboration
are
essential.
Additionally,
cutting-edge
stem
technology
is
available
in
the
classroom.
We
have
our
students,
working
with
outside
experts
and
they're,
exploring
global
issues
and
integrated
as
aspects
of
the
STEM
coursework.
So.
A
A
The
International
Baccalaureate
middle
years
program
is
IB
and
YP
correct,
and
then
we
also
have-
and
that
goes
for
middle
school
goes
grades
six
through
eight
and
we'll
explain
a
little
bit
more
about
that
in
the
high
school
and
so
PVA
is
performing
visual
arts
and
that's
we
sorta
took
PVA
and
the
stem
is
in
common
parlance.
You
know
we
use
that
already
as
science,
technology,
engineering
and
math
and
as
you
stated,
it's
a
lot
more
than
just
the
sum
of
its
parts
right.
It's
a
lot
more
than
just
science
isolated
from
technology.
F
And
it's
an
integrated
approach,
so
we
don't
want
our
sight.
Our
students,
just
to
be
scientists
in
a
lab,
want
them
to
be
able
to
interact
with
one
another
in
a
professional
setting.
I
think
the
the
best
way
to
describe
the
STEM
program
is
that
there
are
in
a
kind
of
research
and
development,
the
little
laboratory
within
a
school
setting
where
they
get
to
pursue
their
passions
and
really
engage
in
thoughtful
questions
and
explore
their
own
research
interest
right.
A
F
Teachers
bring
to
the
table
a
blend
of
interdisciplinary
approaches
to
the
curriculum,
so
it
a
little
different
than
the
traditional
classroom
model.
It
promotes
critical
thinking
and
effective
communication,
those
21st
century
skills
that
are
critical
for
student
success
and,
finally,
our
magnet
programs
prepare
students
for
their
future
beyond
high
school,
getting
them
to
engage
with
professionals
in
the
field
allowing
them
for
career
skill
development
such
as
resume
writing
professional
or
interviewing
and
professional
ethics
specific
to
the
field
of
the
program
right.
F
A
Now
understood,
and
also
you
know,
if
you're
thinking
about
it
so
in
middle
school
is
great,
it's
six,
seven
and
eight
right.
So
you
know
we
can
talk
a
little
bit
more
about
that
in
our
when
we
come
back
from
break
about
the
application
part
of
it,
but
we're
also
looking
at
a
middle
school
fosters
some
of
the
soft
skills.
A
F
Passionate
about
what
they're
learning
it's
not
just
open
up
a
textbook,
or
you
know,
a
lecture
driven
environment,
it's
really
students
taking
ownership
of
their
education,
pursuing
their
interests
and
then
with
the
availability
of
all
the
technology
and
the
access
to
professionals
in
their
field
of
interest.
That
is
really
what
we're
hoping
drives.
Their
passionate
interest.
D
F
D
D
F
That's
different
from
stem,
obviously
because
of
its
focus
in
the
medical
field,
in
a
similar
fashion
to
the
experiences
that
we
provide
students
at
middle
school.
We
give
these
students
at
the
high
school
level
access
to
professionals,
it's
a
rigorous
environment
in
high
school,
but
we
also
are
conscious
of
students
transitioning
from
high
school
to
college
and
career
after
graduation
right,
so
really
trying
to
set
them
up
for
success
in
those
career
pathways
that
they've
chosen
right.
A
So
you've
got
stem
has
actually
into
high
school
foci,
so
it's
one
is
that
stem
biomedical
and
the
other
one
is
stem
non
biomedical.
If
you
want
to
look
at
those
things
and
write,
they
have
and
they
my
understanding
is.
They
have
pathways
also
within
the
stem
that
they
could
five
different
sort
of
courses
of
study
that
they
could
pursue
in
the
STEM
program
in
the
International
Baccalaureate
I
know
that
there's
an
also
a
diploma
program,
part
of
this.
D
F
D
D
F
A
And
it's
and
it's
globally
recognized,
so
that's
that's
an
added
benefit
for
the
for
the
students
and
parents.
That's
great
good!
When
we
come
back
from
break
we'll
talk
a
little
bit
more
about
the
application
process
and
and
how
students
can
get
involved
in
this
in
our
magnet
application
process
and
the
magnet
programs.
Wonderful,
thank
you.
Hi.
G
When
a
school
bus
stops
to
load
students
as
a
driver,
this
is
what
you
will
see
at
150
feet.
The
bus
will
activate
hazard
lights
at
a
hundred
feet.
The
bus
driver
will
activate
the
amber
lights,
they
will
start
slowing
down
at
ten
feet
before
the
bus
stops.
They
will
turn
on
the
red
bus
lights,
their
stop
sign
will
come
out
and
students
will
begin
to
load
once
all
students
are
on
board
safely.
The
bus
driver
will
turn
off
red
lights
and
move
forward
at
this
time.
It
is
safe
for
the
motorists
to
resume
movement.

this
opportunity
to
provide
this
valuable
information
pertaining
to
school
meals,
school

and
body
for
academic
success.

to

thanks
again
and
have
a
great
school

Welcome.
A
A
D
A
In
addition,
the
students
who
apply
to
one
originated
in
the
performing
Visual
Arts
a
grade
9
can
apply
and
also
for
a
grade
10
going
into
grade
11
for
the
International
Baccalaureate
diploma
program.
We
talked
a
little
bit
earlier
about
IBB
having
two
different
branches:
my
P
and
then
the
DP.
The
diploma
program
grade
10
going
into
grade.
11
is
the
diploma
program
so
and
the
best
bet-
actually,
you
know
for
this
information
is
to
go
to
the
web
site.
Wwe
a
cps,
org,
slash,
magnet,
singular,
magnet
and
that'll.
A
F
A
A
F
A
So
for
for
a
student
and
a
parent
to
get
ready,
you
need
to
know
your
SIF
number.
We
call
it
the
lunch
number
or
your
student
ID.
It's
a
six
digit
number
usually
begins
with
the
number
six
or
seven
and
they
need
the
student
needs
to
know
that,
because
that
identifies
the
student
for
the
application
and
also
the
password
the
student
uses
to
access
the
computers
at
school.
So
those
are
the
two
bits
of
information.
A
If
a
student
is
not
current
Anne
Arundel
County,
Public
Schools,
the
student
can
create
his
or
her
own
username
and
password
right,
but
thus,
if
that
lunch
number
plus
the
plus
the
password,
what
I
recommend
is
that
students
and
parents
apply
for
the
password
reset
that'll
allow
them
to
do
it.
The
magnet
office
doesn't
cannot
reset
passwords
but
make
it
easier
and
smoother
transition.
So
that's
what
you
need
to
know.
You
also
need
to
know
the
dates
of
application
for
the
2019
2020
school
year.
A
It'd
be
the
applications
open
on
October
14th,
that's
Monday
at
noon
and
they
closed
on
November,
26th
2019.
It
also
at
noon
and
that's
the
Tuesday
before
Thanksgiving,
so
in
in
larger
terms,
if
parents
apply
around
Halloween
between
Halloween
and
Thanksgiving,
that
will
give
you
the
timeframe
that
they
can
remember.
So
the
dates
are
you
know
it's
the
second
Monday
in
October,
through
the
Tuesday
before
Thanksgiving
uh-huh,
okay,.
A
Online
right,
so
the
there
are
a
couple
parts
to
this,
so
a
student
has
to
have
interest
and
sort
of
look
through
which
of
the
program's
interests
him
or
her
right.
So
one
of
the
things
I
would
do
is
look
at
the
magnet
website
and
click
on
the
brochure
there
there's
a
extensive
brochure
that
has
all
the
qualifications
find
out
discern
what
you're
interested
in
and
it's
not
a
problem
for
discerning.
You
know
sort
of
your
interests
now
in
October,
and
then
you
know
when
you
get
final
word
of
acceptance
into
a
program.
A
Interested
in
that
anymore,
in
October,
I
was
a
different
person
and
so
that
that
happens
you
know
you're
you're,
a
parent
of
a
both
in
middle
school
and
a
high
school,
or
so
they
will
change
between
now,
and
you
know
the
beginning
of
the
new
year
now,
one
of
the
things
that
parents
and
students
can
talk
about
is
go
to
the
sessions
there
are
each
school
has
its
own
information
session
or
exponent,
and
it's
the
terms
that
IB
uses
for
them.
It's
it
published
on
the
magnet
website.
A
Students
eligible
students
would
have
received
a
letter
already
this
year
too,
and
it's
got
a
chart
there
saying
these
are
the
nights.
We
have
these
information
sessions
and
please
go
to
go
to
any
and
all
if
that
can't
happen,
and
one
of
the
other
things
that
a
parent
might
do
is
go
to
that
same
magnet
website
on
the
bottom
of
the
page,
there's
a
video
there
and
then
it's
about
an
eight
minute
video
and
it
explains
exactly
what
the
process
is,
which
programs
are
available,
what
the
parents
need
to
know.
A
So
that's
and
so
to
sum
up,
you
need
to
know
your
Siffin,
the
lunch
number,
the
ID
student
ID
a
password
apply.
You
have
to
know
which
program
you
want
to
apply
to
and
it's
by
zoned
school,
so
it's
by
the
zoned
middle
school.
So,
let's
just
say,
I
live
in
Hanover
my
zone
middle
school
would
probably
be
MacArthur
middle,
so
I
know
what
I'd
have
to
then
apply
to
the
schools
I'll
be
applying
to
were
in
that
area.
Right
so,
and
the
the
magnet
school
may
not
be
the
normal
zone
school
right.
F
A
A
So
the
process
is
the
waiting
part,
so
the
patience
if
I,
could
you
know
one
thing
that
it's
like
it's
gonna
take
a
little
bit
you
apply
on
October
14th.
You
really
want
to
hear
anything
much
from
us
until
eligibility,
which
is
done
typically
at
the
end
of
January,
some
more
on
Martin
Luther,
King
Day.
Just
after
that,
we
tell
parents
and
students
we've
deemed
you
eligible
or
not
ineligible.
A
Parents
have
the
right
to
appeal,
so
we
give
them
a
10-day
window
for
that
and
then
then,
then
they
go
to
lottery
and
it's
an
open
lottery.
It's
not
waited
for
any
reason.
The
fact
that
a
student
has
been
in
a
magnet
program
or
not
the
fact
that
the
students
coming
from
the
outside
is
new
here
this
year
is
not
all
those
things
are
patients,
but
the
lottery
is
the
probably
the
biggest
question
I
get.
It
is
an
open
unweighted
lottery,
our
philosophy
and
animal.
A
No
County,
Public
Schools
is
all
means
all
all
students
who
are
eligible
have
the
opportunity,
that's
what
we
really
believe
in
we're
doing
the
best
for
children.
So
this
is
definitely
has
the
all
children.
We
have
to,
we
have
to
take
care
of
all
children.
Typically,
we
get
around
5,000
applications
right
from
a
fewer
fewer
number
of
applicants,
single
applicants,
but
5,000
applications,
and
they
students
may
apply
for
as
many
for
as
many
programs
as
they're
eligible
for
and
they're
interested
in.
A
So
students
don't
have
to
limit
themselves
at
this
point
of
the
year
to
what
they
want.
So
those
are
the
two
biggest
things
I
get.
Perhaps
transportation
to
is
another
question
I
get
there
are
there
is
transportation
provided
from
consolidated
bus
stops?
They
may
not
be
an
ordinary
walking
distances
and
the
parents
may
have
to
support
with
you
know,
with
a
with
a
ride
or
something
to
that
bus
stop,
but
they're,
usually
at
elementary
schools
and
libraries.
That's
what
they
try
to
do,
and
the
transportation
office
sets
that
in
August
of
the
incoming
year.
Okay,.
F
A
The
best
thing
is,
they
can
talk
to
other
students
and
go
to
those
information
nights
or
the
expose.
Those
are
the
places
that
they
really
need
to
be
talk
with
other
students
and
say
what
they
like
about.
It
go
visit
the
schools
and
see
what
they
can
do
to
find
out.
The
information
is
if
it
feels
right
that
may
be
an
indication
that
they
should
really
you
know,
sort
of.
They
should
apply
to
that
program
and
again,
they'll
know
something
more
later
on.
A
Kevin
I
want
to
thank
you
for
talking
to
me
a
little
bit
it's
you
know
and
well
next
and
the
next.
You
know
next
time
we'll
talk
a
little
bit
more
about
you
know,
sort
of
considering
the
magnet
and
what
the
Advanced
Studies
and
programs
office
has
to
offer
for
parents
and
students
in
Anne,
Arundel
County
thanks.
