A
Across
our
nation,
both
celebrate
Read
Across
America
with
guest
speakers
and
fun
activities
at
us,
Peak
High
School
in
Pasadena
Maryland,
we
celebrated
our
11th
annual
day
of
reading.
With
authors,
artists
asked
the
physicists
and
even
a
former
NFL
football
player,
sit
back,
relax
and
enjoy
our
2018
Read
Across
America
event.
I
have.
C
So
Colleen
wrote
a
poem
that
I'm
gonna
read
because
I
loved
it
so
much
and
I
think
it
fits
in
with
see
your
future
reading
as
a
crystal
ball.
So
something
is
on
the
horizon:
strong,
Swift
and
bright.
Something
is
on
the
horizon,
mysterious,
scary
and
dark.
Something
is
on
the
horizon:
unpredictable
whimsical
and
unkind.
C
C
What
do
you
thinks
gonna
be
going
on
12
years
from
now?
It's
really
hard
to
tell
but
I
do
know.
One
thing:
artificial
intelligence
will
be
upon
us,
virtual
or
augmented
virtual
reality
will
be
upon
us
and
you
all
are
using
that
already
in
snapchat
like
who
uses
snapchat
on
snapchat
there's
some
things
that
you
all
are
capable
of
doing
that.
You
don't
even
understand
that
if
you
become
really
proficient
at
it,
a
company
will
want
to
hire
you.
C
So
essentially
these
doors
symbolize
opportunity
and
you
could
choose
the
line
green
door,
the
brown
door
or
the
orange
door.
Many
many
many
other
doors,
but
the
one
thing
that's
clear
and
all
of
the
speakers
have
talked
about-
is
that
it's
your
choice
and
you
all
are
actually
making
choices
for
your
future.
Some
of
you
are
doing
it
intentionally,
and
some
of
you
are
doing
it.
Unknowingly.
C
C
So
they
both
had
their
headphones
on
and
they
were
kind
of
plugged
in
and
I
said
to
them.
I
said:
hey
guys,
you
realize
if
you
keep
those
in
the
chances
of
me
calling
on
you
is
really
high,
so
they
took
him
out
now.
Here's
what's
interesting.
So
dr.
banks
talked
about
circle
of
influence
and
she
talked
about
having
people
around
you
that
push
you
to
higher
levels,
and
why
do
you
guys
think
I
said
that
to
you
all?
D
E
C
Now,
dr.
banks,
when
she
talked
earlier,
she
said
she
wish
someone
had
told
her
some
of
the
things
that
she
didn't
know.
So
all
of
the
adults
in
the
room
were
all
the
adults,
raise
your
hand
or
stand
up
all
of
the
adults
in
the
room.
Please
all
of
the
adults.
Please
stand
up,
meaning
you're
over
the
age
of
25,
so.
C
Earlier
today
you
spoke-
and
you
spoke
very
eloquently-
you're
one
of
the
substitute
teachers
you
have
Ming
over
there.
You
have
dr.
banks,
your
principals,
in
the
background.
So
what
you
all
don't
realize
sometimes,
is
that
all
of
us
have
been
influenced.
You
can
have
a
seat.
All
of
us
have
been
influenced
by
others
and
one
of
the
things
I
like
to
refer
to
as
growth
mindset
and
fixed
mindset,
so
Zoey.
C
C
C
Has
anyone
ever
done
that
before
I've
done
it
I've
done
it
a
lot
as
a
matter
of
fact,
when
we
talk
about
fixed
and
growth
mindset,
technically
we're
both.
So
for
those
of
you
who,
who
don't
know
me,
I
played
football.
Like
a
thousand
years
ago,
I
played
football
at
Northeast,
I
went
to
the
University
of
Maryland
on
a
football
scholarship,
and
my
first
job
out
of
college
was
with
the
Kansas
City
Chiefs.
C
C
Okay,
four
point:
five!
Okay,
so
four
point:
five
is
a
good
time,
so
the
time
that
I
ran
the
first
time,
I
ran
it
as
a
incoming
student
at
the
University
of
Maryland,
I
ran
like
a
four
six
good
time.
Bad
time
for
six
is
good,
hmm
I'd
kind
of
say:
that's
not
so
good,
but
that's
just
my
criteria.
So
the
second
time
I
ran
it.
I
got
down
to
like
a
track
stance.
I
took
off,
I
came
through
the
line
and
everybody's
looking
at
their
stop,
watches
and
they're
like
whoa.
C
C
That's
why
math
is
important
see
so
now
the
difference
between
like,
if
you're,
if
you're
a
wide
receiver
on
the
field
and
you're
playing
against
the
DB
who's
running
a
four
six
and
I
run
a
four
four.
That
means
I
can
run
by
that
DB
anytime.
I
want
right,
and
it's
probably
a
distance
between
here
and
here,
and
if
your
quarterback
isn't
that
great
of
a
thrower,
he
doesn't
have
to
be
that
great
of
a
seraph.
He
just
has
the
ball
out
in
front
of
a
person,
so
it
makes
it.
C
It
makes
a
big
difference
so
anyway,
I
had
that
speed
and
the
quarterback
at
that
time
was
this
guy
by
the
name
of
Boomer
Esiason.
Some
of
you
might
know
that
name
because
he's
one
of
the
commentators
on
I
think
it's
NBC
and,
and
he
had
a
15
year,
NFL
career
has
sated.
Really
good
career
is
a
really
good
quarterback
man,
if
I
had
his
confidence.
C
Oh,
my
god
that
guy
was
from
New
York
his
his
his
ego
was
probably
besides
at
a
state
of
Maryland,
and
that's
that's
probably
no
exaggeration,
because
he
had
confidence
coming
out
of
his
ears.
I
needed
some
of
that
confidence,
but
it
doesn't
work
like
that.
As
you
all
know,
and
I
had
to
go
through
my
struggles.
I
had
to
go
through
those
struggles,
just
to
get
better,
so
I
didn't
play
my
first
year
and
all
of
a
sudden
like
one
day
in
practice
as
we're
going
along
it.
C
Just
clicked
I
felt
comfortable
I
felt
like
wow
I
can
do
this
and
once
I
started
to
feel
that
way.
Really
cool
things
started
to
happen.
I
mentioned
that,
because
this
woman
here
is
the
first
woman
to
win
the
Nobel
Prize
in
the
math
arena.
Essentially,
so
she
won
it
last
year
and,
unfortunately
she's
no
longer
with
us.
Her
name
is
Miriam
Merkers
nany
in
eighth
grade
or
one
of
her
her
middle
school
years.
One
of
her
teachers
told
her.
C
She
would
not
amount
to
anything
in
math,
so
sorted
was
not
necessarily
the
vote
of
confidence
so
to
speak,
and
the
good
thing
about
this
is
for
Miriam
was
the
following
year.
She
had
a
really
a
teacher
who
really
championed
her,
and
obviously
she
went
on
to
do
some
really
great
things,
because
to
win
this
prize
is
is
really
super
awesome.
C
The
quit
out
of
you
so
to
me
this
is
a
perfect
I.
Think
high
school
is
a
great
example
for
you
all
as
the
Train
the
quit
out
of
you,
that's
what
sports
is
all
about.
So
where
are
my
athletes
all
right?
So
what
sport
do
you
play?
Lacrosse?
Oh,
so
your
season,
your
practice,
just
started
yesterday,
right.
Okay,
first
game
to
season
is
against
who
oh
wow.
C
C
Okay,
so
what
she
just
said
was
last
year
did
not
go
well
for
the
varsity
lacrosse
team.
Okay,
sorry
JV!
So
this
year
you
all
are
expected
to
do
better,
because
you
have
some
new
people
who
are
bringing
some
additional
talent
to
the
team.
Is
that
correct,
okay,
train
the
quit
out
of
you?
What
does
that
mean
to
you?
H
C
So
so
here's
the
reason
why
I
like
doing
this
is
because
I
just
had
a
conversation
with
one
of
the
students
in
the
back
and
I
said
you
all
should
fail
faster
you're,
probably
going.
What
what
does
that
mean
and
the
reason
why
I
say
fail
faster
is
because
we
wouldn't
have
lights
in
this
room,
if
not
for
who
say
it
a
little
louder
little
louder
for.
C
C
C
C
C
Okay,
let's
go
with
this
one.
What
kind
of
phone
is
this?
What
company,
what
company?
So
it's
an
iPhone?
What
company
Apple
who's
the
founder
of
Apple
and
who's,
the
other
person
bonus,
Steve
Wozniak,
so
did
Steve
Jobs
get
fired
from
his
own
company.
He
did
so.
What
did
Steve
Jobs
do
when
he
got
fired
from
his
own
company?
C
He
went
to
Pixar,
he
went
to
Pixar
and
he
learned
some
things
that
Pixar
that
allowed
him
to
come
back
to
Apple
and
innovative
person
to
bring
some
things
that
we
have
now
that
we
would
not
have
had
before
so
through
hardship
and
through
quitting.
Sometimes
you
learn
a
lot
about
yourselves,
so
just
like
in
the
picture
that
dr.
banks
showed
with
the
400-meter
runner
who
had
his
dad
help
him
off
the
field.
C
This
is
my
dad
helping
me
crutch
off
the
field
after
popping
my
Achilles
tendon,
so
it
happened
right
before
halftime
of
a
game
in
1986,
which
was
a
long
time
ago.
I
told
you
I
was
kind
of
old
anyway,
I
have
no
idea
what
he's
asking
me,
but
it
seemed
like
it
was
pretty
intense
huh
now.
This
is
how
this
is
how
you
can
tell
how
old
I
am,
and
mr.
C
Gorsky
can
attest
to
this,
because
nowadays
there
would
have
been
like
one
of
those
little
wheely
things
that
would
have
CAD
me
get
on
the
back
of
it
and
ride
off
into
the
sunset
right.
So
when
you're
really
old,
you
have
to
crunch
off
the
field,
and
it
took
me
so
long
I
was
had
to
take
a
shower
when
I
got
in,
but
essentially
when
I
got
into
the
locker
room,
doctor
kind
of
felt
he
squeezed
the
back
part
of
my
ankle.
He's
like
hey.
C
You
popped
your
Achilles
you're
out
for
the
rest
of
the
season.
I'm
like
okay
kind
of
cried
a
little
I
was
like
hey,
this,
isn't
too
cool,
but
then
I
was
like
wow
I,
get
to
injury,
the
rest
of
my
college
life
without
having
to
go
to
practice,
so
that
was
kind
of
fun.
I
actually
enjoyed
it.
I
got
involved
in
some
other
activities
and
while
I
wasn't
playing
football,
but
you
get
the
point.
The
point
really
here
is
sometimes
things
don't
go
the
way
you
expect.
C
As
a
matter
of
fact,
that's
kind
of
like
how
life
is
so
this
graphic
here
this
graphic
here,
you
can
kind
of
see
on
the
outside
part
of
the
circles
up
top.
What
do
you
love?
If
you
look
to
the
left?
What
are
you
good
at
down
at
the
bottom?
What
you
don't
see
is
like
what
you
can
be
paid
for
and
to
the
far
right
what
the
world
needs.
C
Your
challenge
is
to
figure
out
who
you
are,
and
the
sooner
you
do,
that
the
better
off
you're
gonna,
be
so
I'm
gonna.
Give
it
a
couple
examples.
The
first
example
you
guys
are
not
gonna.
Do
you're
gonna
disagree
with
me
on
I'm,
not
a
big
fan
of
dating,
especially
at
this
age.
So
the
reason
why
is
because,
typically
in
a
relationship,
one
person
is
always
acquiescing
to
the
other.
Instead
of
taking
a
stand
and
saying
you
know,
I
really
don't
want
to
do
that.
I
want
to
do
this.
C
C
So
anyway,
as
you
can
see,
passion
mission,
vocation
and
profession
is
on
the
inner
part
of
that
and
in
the
world
in
which
we're
living.
This
is
the
challenge
for
you
all
is
we
have
no
idea
what
jobs
are
going
to
be
needed,
but
we
do
know
that
there's
some
skills
that
you
all
will
need
so
I'm
not
going
to
read
all
of
these
I
think
I'm
gonna,
um
there's
gonna
be
seven
of
them,
so
I'm
gonna
read
the
top
part.
I'm
gonna
pass
the
mic.
C
H
The
idea
that
a
company
is
companies,
senior
leaders
have
all
the
answers
and
can
solve
problems
by
themselves
has
gone
completely
by
the
wayside.
The
person
who's
close
to
the
work
has
to
have
strong
and
the
light
text
do
analytic
skills.
You
have
to
be
rigorous
test.
Your
assumptions
don't
take
things
at
face,
value,
don't
go
and
with
freaking
yeah,
preconceived
ideas,
then
you're
trying
to
prove
Ellen
Kamata.
C
So
here's
what
I
want
you
all
to
really
think
about
so
I
want
you
to
think
about
yourselves,
as
you
hear
from
in
this
particular
case,
Ellen
Kumada,
who
talked
about
what's
needed.
This
is
what
companies
are
looking
for.
So
if
you
want
a
job
for
the
future
and
you
have
critical
thinking
and
problem-solving
abilities,
this
is
what
they
want
now.
How
do
you
develop
that
you
develop
it
now,
while
you're
in
school,
while
you're
here
at
Chesapeake
high
school
a
great
opportunity
to
develop
those
skills?
I
C
J
I've
been
here
for
four
years
and
we've
done
fundamental
reorganization
every
year
because
of
changes
in
the
business
I
can
guarantee
the
job
I
hire
someone
to
do.
Wilma
will
change
or
may
not
exist
in
the
future.
So
this
is
why
adaptability
and
learning
skills
are
more
important
than
technical
skills.
C
So
this
particular
slide
change
is
going
to
happen.
You
all
are
not
gonna
work
at
the
same
company,
the
rest
of
your
lives.
More
than
likely
we're
gonna
be
going
into
a
free,
labor
society
or
market,
where
the
person
with
the
best
skills
at
the
time
will
get
the
job.
So
when
when
when
clay
says,
I
can
guarantee
the
job
I
hire
someone
to
do
will
change
absolute
fact
or
may
not
exist
in
the
future,
and
that's
why
I
mentioned
augmented
reality:
artificial
intelligence,
but
then
the
next
part.
C
K
C
So
did
you
all
get
that
self
directed
people?
Do
you
all
know
what
that
means?
Here's
what
that
means!
You're,
not
gonna,
have
a
teacher
in
the
room.
That's
gonna
tell
you
what
to
do.
Let
me
say
that
again,
there
won't
be
people
in
the
room
telling
you
what
to
do,
because
if
they
need
to
tell
you
what
to
do,
they
don't
need
you.
C
Anybody
know
who
Sarah
Blakely
is
so
she's
a
billionaire
she's,
a
billionaire
Sarah
Blakely's,
a
billionaire,
because
she
came
up
with
the
way
to
come
up
with
a
better
product
called
Spanx.
Has
anybody
ever
heard
of
Spanx
who's
heard
of
Spanx?
Raise
your
hand?
Yes,
so
think
about
this
for
a
second.
She
came
up
with
the
way
to
make
something
better
so
remember
that
chart
where
we
talked
about
finding
a
way
to
get
paid
for
something,
that's
what
she
did
so
I
have
the
five-minute
warning
on
me
now.
L
C
This
point
has
been
hammered
by
all
of
the
speakers
earlier
today.
So
that's
really
important
is
to
learn
how
to
effectively
oral
and
written
communication,
so
something
you
need
to
work
on
I'm
not
going
to
read
this
one
but
essentially
89%
of
employer.
Respondents
report
high
school
graduate
entrance
as
deficient
in
communication,
and
you
can
see
the
four
points
that
they
make.
Can
you
present
your
argument
persuasively?
Can
you
inspire
others
with
passion?
Can
you
concisely
capture
the
highlights
of
what
you're
trying
to
say?
C
C
C
In
other
words,
be
creative,
so
I,
like
this
particular
graphic,
you
see
the
word
success.
That's
the
iceberg
that
you
typically
see
above
and
I
kind
of
like
to
refer
to
the
society
in
which
we
live.
Is
the
highlight
Society.
So,
like
ESPN,
you
know
they
don't
show
LeBron
missing
a
basket.
They
they
don't
show
LeBron
all
of
the
practices
over
the
summer.
They
show
him.
C
You
know
what
the
360
dunks
and
this
that
the
other
they
didn't
show
Steph
Curry
when
he
was
in
seventh
and
eighth
grade
figuring
out
how
to
shoot
up
above
his
head
and
then
not
being
highly
recruited.
But
you
see
him
now,
so
you
see
all
the
success,
but,
as
you
can
see
below
the
surface,
persistence
failure
sacrifice
good
habits,
hard
work.
Dedication
are
all
the
things
that
people
don't
see.
C
So
just
as
a
quick
reminder,
you
all
are
very
capable,
as
a
matter
of
fact,
some
of
the
snapchat
stories
that
I
see
super
creative
love.
It
just
take
that
take
that
and
use
it
as
your
own
personal
brand
and
figure
out
how
to
tell
a
story.
If
you
can
do
that,
you
can
sell
a
product,
you
can
find
your
voice.
So
with
that
being
said,
thank
you
for
your
time
have
a
great
day
all.
