A
Welcome
to
a
grade
two
lesson
today:
we're
going
to
be
adding
within
1000
and
we're
going
to
be
looking
at
two
strategies
to
help
your
students
at
home.
One
thing
to
keep
in
mind
is
that
the
standard
algorithm
is
not
taught
until
grade
four,
so
all
of
the
strategies
that
your
students
and
your
children
learn
from
kindergarten.
All
the
way
up
to
second
grade
help
support
their
ability
to
fluently
add
within
a
thousand
come
grade
four.
So
let's
take
a
look.
A
So
when
we're
adding
286
plus
143
we're
putting
two
quantities
together
in
class,
your
students
are
going
to
be
using
base
ten
blocks.
These
are
place
value
blocks
and
each
of
them
represent
a
value.
So
two
hundreds
are
represented
by
two
flats:
80
are
represented
by
eight
rods,
and
six
ones
are
represented
by
six
units.
We're
gonna
be
combining
that
with
100
100
flat,
44,
tens
and
three
ones.
When
we
put
these
together,
students
then
see
that
they
have
three
hundred,
they
have
twelve
tens
and
they
have
nine
ones.
A
280
and
six
likewise,
143
is
decomposed
into
140
and
three,
and
the
main
focus
of
second
grade
is
to
really
focus
on
place
value
understanding.
So
students
realized
that
if
they
have
200
and
they
have
100
more,
they
have
a
total
of
300.
They
have
eight
tens
and
four
more
tens.
They
have
a
total
of
12
tens
and
then
they
add
the
ones
6
plus
3
is
9
for
a
total
of.
A
429
and
that's
it
so
you
now
learned
two
strategies
to
help
your
kids
at
home,
with
adding
within
without
zone.
Remember
math
is
visible
and
math
is
social.
That
means
that
students
need
to
get
their
thinking
down
on
paper
and
talking
through
their
strategies
in
order
to
develop
a
deeper
conceptual
understanding
and,
ultimately,
to
see
the
beauty
of
mathematics.
