B
Welcome
to
anne
arundel
county
public
schools.
Our
district
includes
123
schools
with
80
000
students.
There
are
approximately
79
comprehensive
elementary
schools,
22
middle
schools,
14
high
schools
and
8
other
educational
service
centers.
We
have
13
national
and
18
maryland
blue
ribbon
schools
of
excellence.
B
C
Thanks
for
taking
the
time
to
watch
this
video,
it
has
been
shown
that
students
do
better
in
school
when
their
families
are
involved
in
their
children's
education.
This
video
will
provide
you
with
basic
information
about
anne
arundel,
county
public
schools
and
will
also
show
you
ways
in
which
you
can
become
involved
in
your
children's
education,
hello.
D
D
We
also
serve
as
cultural
liaisons
to
explain
how
schools
work
in
the
united
states
and
specifically
in
anne
arundel
county
maryland
as
you've
probably
already
noticed,
schools
do
not
operate
the
same
way
in
every
country.
Our
team
includes
speakers
of
many
different
languages,
though
the
majority
of
the
teams
speak
spanish.
E
E
E
Please
know
that
you
cannot
attend
school
without
proof
of
required.
Immunizations
anne
arundel
county
has
two
immunization
clinics
that
can
assist
in
obtaining
required
immunizations.
They
are
located
in
annapolis
and
glen
burnie.
Most
students
coming
from
other
countries
are
required
to
have
a
tuberculosis
test
done.
E
You
will
need
to
call
your
local
health
clinic
to
schedule
an
appointment
for
immunizations
in
anne
arundel
county
as
well
as
most
of
the
united
states.
The
elementary
schools
have
grades
kindergarten
through
fifth,
the
middle
schools
have
sixth,
through
eighth
grades,
and
the
high
schools
have
ninth
through
twelfth
grades.
E
Your
child
will
attend
the
school
assigned
by
your
area
or
residence.
Sometimes
it
is
called
your
home
school
or
neighborhood
school.
After
you
visit
the
isso,
you
will
need
to
complete
the
enrollment
process
at
your
child's
home
school.
All
parents
and
visitors
must
report
to
the
main
office.
Before
proceeding
into
a
school.
E
C
Different
types
of
personnel
every
school
has
different
types
of
personnel,
many
of
which
will
be
familiar
to
you.
For
example,
each
school
has
a
principal
and
teachers.
Every
school
has
at
least
one
secretary.
Who
is
the
first
person
you
will
meet
when
visiting
a
school.
There
are
other
types
of
personnel.
You
may
be
less
familiar
with.
School
nurses
help
students
when
they
are
sick,
school
counselors
help
students
with
their
feelings,
behavior
and
academic
issues.
E
E
One
main
difference
about
school
in
the
united
states
compared
to
many
other
countries,
is
that
attendance
is
mandatory.
There
was
a
recent
law
passed
that
increased
the
required
age
of
attendance
from
16
to
18..
So
as
of
july
1st
2017,
all
students
must
attend
school
until
age
18.
students
may
miss
school
due
to
illness,
a
death
in
the
family,
religious
holidays,
court,
suspension,
state
emergency,
a
lack
of
authorized
transportation
or
a
visit
with
a
parent
or
guardian,
who
is
an
active
duty.
E
Keep
in
mind
that
schools
remain
in
session
when
it's
raining
and
even
sometimes
when
it's
snowing,
so
please
make
sure
your
child
dresses
appropriately
for
the
weather
during
winter.
Your
child
needs
a
heavy
coat
hat
and
gloves
if
your
child
is
sick
or
needs
to
miss
school
for
any
other
reason,
please
provide
a
written
note
for
your
child
when
they
return.
E
If
your
child
is
absent
or
late
from
school,
you
will
receive
an
automated
voice
message
or
email
to
inform
you
of
your
child's
absence
or
tardy
a
truant
student
is
any
student
absent
15
days
in
a
semester
without
a
lawful
cause,
a
parent
or
guardian
of
a
truant
student
may
be
contacted
by
a
people.
Personnel
worker
excessive
absences
may
result
in
recommendation
for
retention.
C
Uniforms
and
supplies
some
schools
require
students
to
wear
a
uniform
that
must
be
purchased
scarves
or
other
headwear
will
only
be
allowed
for
health
safety
or
religious
reasons.
Most
schools
also
require
some
sort
of
uniform
to
be
worn
for
physical
education
or
gym
class.
Some
schools
may
ask
students
to
purchase
their
gym
uniform,
while
others
ask
that
students
provide
their
own
clothes,
such
as
shorts
and
a
t-shirt.
C
E
E
C
E
Communication
with
parents,
it
is
extremely
important
that
you
always
provide
your
child's
school
with
updated
contact
information.
If
your
phone
number
changes-
and
you
do
not
let
the
school
know
about
it,
it
will
be
very
difficult
to
get
a
hold
of
you
if
your
child
is
sick
or
there
is
an
emergency.

In
addition
to
these
core
subject
areas,
all
students
participate,
weekly
in
art,
music,
physical
education
and
library,
media
instruction
in
middle
school
students,
take
english
language,
arts,
mathematics,
science
and
social
studies
daily
for
the
entire
year.
Physical
education
and
health
is
also
a
required
course
and
is
offered
on
a
rotating
day
basis
in
all
three
grade
levels
in
high
school,
most
students
take
eight
classes,
which
is
each
approximately
80
minutes.
C
C
C
C
A
d
is
60
to
69
percent
and
anything
below
60
is
failing.
At
the
high
school
level,
a
gpa
is
calculated
which
stands
for
grade
point
average.
Your
child
will
receive
a
report
card
four
times
a
year.
At
the
end
of
each
nine
week,
marking
period,
the
last
report
card
of
the
year
will
be
mailed
home
interim
reports
are
also
sent
home
at
the
end
of
the
fifth
week
of
each
nine
week
marking
period.
You
can
also
check
your
child's
progress
with
an
online
tool
called
parent
connect.
C
Special
education
services
are
also
provided
to
students
with
identified
educational
disabilities.
If
you
are
concerned
about
your
child's
progress
or
suspect
that
your
child
may
have
a
disability,
please
let
your
child's
teacher
or
principal
know
so
that
a
meeting
can
be
set
to
discuss
your
concerns.
E
Programs
of
choice,
programs
of
choice,
provide
students
with
specialized
curricular
and
co-curricular
activities
that
meet
their
specific
intellectual
interests
and
needs.
For
example,
some
programs
focus
on
health,
while
others
focus
on
the
arts
and
even
science
and
engineering.
Many
of
these
programs
are
called
magnet.
Programs
and
students
apply
for
those
when
they
are
in
the
fifth
or
eighth
grade.
There
are
informational
sessions
about
these
in
september
and
october
each
year.
There
are
many
other
options
for
programs
of
choice,
but
more
information
that
can
be
provided
here.
C
Let's
talk
a
bit
about
rules.
The
most
important
rules
are
that
weapons,
alcohol
and
drugs
are
prohibited
at
the
bus,
stop
on
the
school
bus
in
school
and
at
all
school
related
functions.
All
high
school
buildings
have
an
office
of
police
officers.
The
school
resource
officers
are
responsible
to
ensure
a
safe
and
secure
school
environment.
C
Ask
your
school
principal
what
the
policy
is
regarding
electronic
devices
in
schools,
cell
phones
are
allowed
for
instructional
purposes
at
the
discretion
of
the
administration
and
school
faculty.
It
is
also
important
to
know
that
aacps
is
committed
to
providing
students
with
an
orderly
learning
environment
that
is
free
from
bullying
and
cyberbullying.
C
Harassment
and
intimidation,
hazing
and
bias-motivated
behavior
bias-motivated
behavior
may
be
related
to
ethnic
or
national
origin,
race,
disability,
sexual
orientation,
religion
or
gender.
There
are
processes
in
place
for
addressing
any
of
these
types
of
actions
which
affect
learning.
If
you
learn
that
your
child
is
being
bullied
or
harassed,
contact,
the
teacher
school,
counselor
or
administrator.
E
Medical
and
health
issues,
if
your
child
needs
to
take
medication
during
school
on
a
regular
basis,
talk
to
the
school
nurse
parents
and
physicians,
must
complete
the
parent's
request
to
administer
medication
at
school.
In
order
for
the
student
to
have
a
medication
administered
you'll
also
want
to
inform
the
school
nurse
of
the
pertinent
information
about
your
child's
health
needs,
such
as
allergies,
asthma
or
diabetes.
E
C
Family
and
community
involvement
in
some
countries,
it
is
seen
as
disrespectful
if
parents
visit
their
child's
school
or
ask
the
teacher
questions
here
in
the
united
states.
It's
the
opposite.
Parents
are
welcome
and
encouraged
to
visit
their
child's
school
and
to
regularly
communicate
with
their
child's
teacher.
C
There
are
many
ways
in
which
you
can
be
involved
in
your
child's
education.
If
your
child
is
in
an
elementary
or
middle
school,
you
will
be
invited
to
a
parent-teacher
conference
twice
a
year.
This
is
a
short
meeting
with
you,
the
teacher
and
an
interpreter
if
needed.
The
teacher
will
update
you
on
the
progress
of
your
child
and
it's
an
opportunity
to
get
to
know
the
teacher
and
ask
questions.
C
C
Some
of
these
will
be
translated
if
you
need
help
understanding
something
sent
home
in
your
child's
backpack.
Ask
your
bilingual
facilitator
or
talk
to
someone
at
the
school
through
language
link,
some
schools
offer
workshops
about
things
like
parenting
or
how
to
help
your
child
with
their
homework.
C
Some
of
these
workshops
are
specifically
for
international
parents,
and
you
can
expect
to
receive
translated
flyers
about
those.
These
meetings
and
workshops
are
a
great
opportunity
for
you
to
learn
how
to
best
help
your
child
and
an
opportunity
to
meet
other
international
parents.
Another
opportunity
to
get
involved
is
to
volunteer
at
your
child's
school.
While
volunteering,
you
may
be
asked
to
help
cut
things
out
for
the
teacher
to
read
to
children
or
anything
else.
The
school
might
need
help
with
every
school
has
a
volunteer
coordinator.
You
can
speak
with
to
begin.
C
Most.
Schools
also
have
a
parent-teacher
association
or
pta,
which
is
a
group
of
parents
that
works
together
to
advocate
for
their
children's
education.
They
work
together
with
the
schools,
to
provide
resources
and
programs
to
all
families.
You
can
also
be
involved
in
your
child's
education
by
supporting
their
academic
success
at
home.
You
can
do
this
by
talking
to
your
child,
about
the
value
of
education,
creating
a
place
for
them
to
do
homework
and
studying
monitoring
homework,
to
be
sure,
it's
completed
and
limiting
tv
and
screen
time.
C
It
is
also
very
helpful
if
you
regularly
read
to
your
child
in
their
native
language.
Lastly,
there
are
plenty
of
opportunities
for
you
to
get
involved
at
the
county
level.
If
you
wish,
for
example,
there
are
county-wide
family
involvement
conferences
each
year,
a
leadership
academy
for
international
parents
and
an
international
parent
advisory
board.
E
E
It
typically
sets
in
after
the
first
few
weeks
of
coming
to
a
new
place,
it's
important
for
students
and
families
to
know
that
some
difficulty
in
adjusting
is
totally
normal
and
it
can
take
time
to
adjust.
If
your
child
would
like
to
talk
to
someone
about
what
they're
going
through,
they
can
talk
to
a
school
counselor.
Sometimes
school
counselors
run
groups
for
students
who
are
new
to
their
school
or
to
the
united
states.
C
E
Field
trip,
most
students
go
on
field
trips,
a
couple
of
times
each
year.
For
example,
a
class
might
visit
the
zoo
if
they
are
learning
about
animals
field
trips,
enhance
students,
learning
and
provide
them
with
an
opportunity
to
see
up
close
something
they
are
learning
about.
In
the
classroom,
most
field
trips
will
need
chaperones,
which
are
extra
adults
such
as
family
members,
to
help
watch
the
students,
while
on
the
trip,
if
you
are
interested
in
chaperoning
a
trip,
you
must
get
a
background
check
done
at
least
two
weeks
before
the
trip.
