Travels
will
explore
all
aspects
of
the
division
of
academic
and
strategic
initiatives
whose
focus
is
directed
solely
towards
supporting
all
students
in
their
learning,
travels,
Advanced,
Studies
and
programs,
curriculum
and
instruction
partnerships,
development
and
marketing,
as
well
as
our
professional
growth
and
development
teams.
All
figure
prominently
in
the
success
of
our
students
and
we
intend
to
share
the
many
aspects
of
their
work
on
this
series.
Welcome
aboard
and
enjoy
the
ride.
Our
show
today
features
the
word
of
music
education.
A
Not
only
are
the
hills
alive,
but
also
our
classrooms
auditoriums
and
the
external
vert
venues
of
the
massive
number
of
performers
here
in
our
county,
we're
delighted
to
have
mr.
Dave
Kaufman
and
mr.
Paul
Dombrowski
here
to
share
with
us
their
journey
once
you
take
a
moment
and
just
familiarize
our
viewing
public
with
who
you
are
Dave,
we'll
start
with
you
certainly.
C
I'm
David
Kaufman
I'm,
the
coordinator
of
the
music
program
here
in
Anne,
Arundel,
County,
Public,
Schools,
and
along
with
a
mighty
music
office
with
Julie
Olsen
and
Lydia
Gonzales
and
Mary
Davis
and
in
the
office.
We
do
a
great
deal
of
work
on
behalf
of
the
students
here
in
the
school
system
and
it's
a
k-12
program.
It
is
a
k-12
program.
Awesome.
D
How
about
you?
Yes,
my
name
is
Paul
Dombrowski
I'm,
the
department
chair
for
the
PVA
music
program
and
I
work
at
broad
neck
high
school,
where
I
oversee
the
students
and
the
staff
within
our
building
and
also
work
with
our
faculty
members
and
students
at
Bates,
Middle
School
in
Brooklyn,
Park,
Middle
School,
as
well
as
studio
39,
which
are
other
PVA
facilities.
A
B
C
So
it's
it's
really
exciting.
In
the
program,
we've
got
several
different
layers
within
the
program.
First,
our
general
music
program.
We
have
pre-k
curriculum
through
5th
grade
where
our
students
are
able
to
participate
in
any
number
of
musical
experiences
in
the
general
music
setting.
In
addition,
we
also
have
our
choral
program.
All
of
our
schools
have
chorus
at
the
5th
grade
level.
Some
of
them
have
to
have
it
at
the
4th
and
5th
grade
level,
and
even
some
yet
have
a
3rd
4th
and
main
chorus.
So
it's
pretty
exciting.
C
C
A
C
D
C
Work
had
been
taking
place
for
about
a
year
or
two
prior
and,
and
we
finally
launched
about
a
year
and
a
half
ago,
our
new
vision
statement,
that
is
cultivating
lifelong
learners,
creators
and
consumers
of
music,
and
what
we
feel
is
that
they're,
each
of
those
three
experiences
and
music
are
unique
onto
themselves.
But
it
is
something
that
we
are
trying
to
make
sure
that
all
of
our
students,
when
they
leave
the
school
system,
they've
got
some
aspect
of
that
being
a
learner,
a
creator
or
a
consumer
of
music
for
the
rest
of
their
lives.
E
A
C
Are
and
actually
this
last
year
we
took
on
an
effort
with
our
curriculum
writing
in
the
third
grade
curriculum
okay,
to
provide
additional
extensions
in
the
curriculum
for
instrumental
playing
floor
recorder
playing
many
of
our
schools
have
a
recorder
units
in
third
grade.
So
it's
it's
a.
We
understand
that
students
making
music
is
more
valuable
than
them
reading
about
it.
So
we
provide
those
experiences
for
our
students.
A
Nice
I
like
the
way
that
sounded
that's
awesome.
So
let's
talk
a
little
bit
about
the
transition.
If
you
will
between
the
elementary
experience
and
the
really
strong
foundation
that
they
get
at
that
level
into
the
middle
school,
you
know
you've
got
a
different
schedule.
You've
got
some
options:
electives,
certainly
music
satisfies
the
fine
art.
Credit
requirement.
Talk
to
me
a
little
bit
about
what
a
middle
school
program
looks
like
with
respect
to
how
it
expands
the
elementary
experience.
Yeah.
C
So
in
our
middle
schools,
the
students
that
may
have
been
participating
in
band
or
Orchestra
during
their
elementary
experience
have
an
opportunity
to
expand
upon
that.
Okay,
we
also
allow
students
to
to
get
started
in
instrumental
music
as
a
middle
school
student.
Okay,
the
the
teachers
I've
often
told
that
I
didn't
start.
My
personal
experience
until
seventh
grade
right
in
instrumental
music,
so
I
feel
very
strongly
about
supporting
students
at
all
levels
of
their
entry
point
into
the
music
experience.
C
The
choral
program
is
is
very
strong
in
all
of
our
middle
schools,
so
there
are
performance
application
experiences
plus
about
a
year
and
a
half
ago
we
launched
a
new
curriculum
for
our
elementary
excuse
me
for
our
middle
school.
Music
goes
global,
a
class
and
that
utilizes
a
new
resource,
a
new
technology
resource.
We
have
students
with
Chromebooks
in
the
classrooms,
really
exciting
opportunity
for
them
to
access
music
in
a
way
that
was
different
than
it
was
previously.
A
A
Many
experiences
so
many
opportunities,
and
so
on
that
same
thread
Paul.
Let's
talk
a
little
bit
about
the
middle
school
opportunities
for
the
PVA
student.
If
you
would
please
kind
of
define
what
a
performing
a
visual
arts
student
is,
who
that
might
be
and
how
a
person
would
go
about
being
involved
in
the
magnet
program?
Well,.
D
For
us,
the
the
pba
student
that
comes
in
is
the
student
who's
got
this
great
passion
for
making
their
artists,
taking
all
the
things
that
Dave
and
his
team
have
already
put
in
place.
Countywide,
okay
and
providing
an
access
and
opportunity
for
all
those
students
throughout
the
entire
county.
Okay-
and
so
the
student
who
comes
into
the
PVA
program,
is
one
who
just
they're
there
that
kid
that
just
can't
live
without
it.
D
They
need
music
and
every
bit
of
what
they
do
every
day,
and
so
that
process
begins
as
early
as
fourth
grade,
where
we
go
to
as
part
of
a
magnet
recruiting
process
where
all
the
magnet
programs
that
fall
under
Advanced
Studies
students
in
the
fourth
grade
are
actually
being
exposed
to
those
programs
with
some
generalized
information
nights.
The
application
process
and
the
audition
process
then
takes
place
during
the
fifth
grade
year,
where
those
students
are
consciously
making
the
decision
to
come
into
the
program
and.
A
A
D
Sure
in
each
of
our
magnet
middle
schools,
we
have
band
chorus
and
strings
okay,
and
those
students
are
engaging
in
a
lot
of
the
same
standards-based
instruction
that
we
would
see
in
curriculum
instruction
office
would
be
putting
in
place.
But
what
is
different?
Is
it
in
both
of
our
magnet
middle
schools
they're
on
an
8
a
B
day
schedule,
so
they
are
having
more
more
class
contact
and.
E
A
D
Have
a
two-hour
block
of
instruction
Wow,
so
not
only
are
they
getting
their
band
and
strings
and
vocal,
focused
prime
arts
instruction,
but
they're
also
being
exposed
to
digital
composition
and
also
the
integration
of
the
other
art
forms
into
the
music
program.
So
there's
an
intentional
focus
on
that
collaboration
across
all
the
art
forms.
I,
love.
A
D
C
The
performance
experience
is
obviously
a
very
valuable
part
of
the
music
education
training
because
it
gives
the
students
a
chance
to
to
really
put
to
a
conclusion
or
put
to
a
you
know
in
a
public
setting
a
demonstration
of
what
they've
learned
and
what
they've
been
able
to
accomplish.
So
during
the
winter
and
in
the
spring,
we
often
have
a
litany
of
performances
and
concerts
that
that
are
presented
by
our
elementary
schools,
both
the
instrumental
side
as
well
as
the
choral
component.
C
The
same
thing
applies
really
at
the
secondary
level
in
terms
of
evening
performances
in
the
programs,
but
we
also
in
the
middle
school.
We
start
offering
countywide
opportunities,
including
a
middle
and
high
school,
all
County,
Honor
chorus,
a
middle
and
high
school,
all
County
Honor,
Band,
Orchestra
and
Jazz
Band
this
year,
we're
actually
starting
for
the
first
time
a
middle
school
honor,
jazz
band
as
part
the
program.
So
we're
very
excited
about
that.
A
B
C
D
We
we
pick
up
with
PVA
much
where,
where
the
curriculum
instruction
side
of
things
with
the
comprehensive
music
programs,
we
dove
tail
into
that.
So
we
bring
in
guest
artists
who
are
working
with
our
students
within
their
respective
prime
arts
forms,
but
also
going
back
to
what
we
were
talking
about.
These
collaborative
opportunities
across
the
art
forms.
D
So
a
music
student
could
choose
to
participate
in
a
project
or
rotate
through
a
project
that
may
be
in
another
art
form
other
than
than
music,
so
that
they
can
bring
back
those
experiences
back
into
their
into
their
music
making.
We
also
provide
students
with
monthly
arts
experiences
where
they
are
able
to
go
out
and
to
go
to
a
concert
or
an
art
exhibit
or
or
a
play
or
a
musical
and
to
enrich
their
experiences
with
what
they're
doing
in
the
class.
That's.
A
Terrific
and
that's
all
beyond
the
traditional
school
day,
great
well
as
the
director
of
curriculum,
I'm
responsible
for
the
program
of
study
and
I,
know
and
I
get
to
the
music
section.
There
is
just
it's
exponentially,
explodes
over
what
was
available
at
the
middle
school
level,
so
Dave.
Let's
start
again
with
you,
talk
to
me
about
the
student,
that's
transitioning
from
eighth
grade
to
ninth
and
just
the
wealth
of
opportunities
that
happen
in
a
music
program
here
in
Anne,
Arundel,
County,
yeah,.
C
We're
very
proud
of
the
of
the
offerings
that
we
have
here
and
and
what's
exciting,
is
that
we
have
teachers
that,
on
a
regular
basis,
often
contribute
ideas
as
to
how
that
can
continue
to
develop
and
and
I.
Think
that's
really
how
we
get
to
the
such
a
rich,
offering
is
that
our
teachers
are
so
committed
to
making
sure
that
the
relevance
of
the
instruction
is
maintained.
We
do
a
nine
through
12
ban
program,
okay,
Orchestra
program,
choral
program,
but
then
within
that
we
have
various
ensembles
based
on
skills
to
students
who
are
achieving
it.
C
Perhaps
a
higher
level
have
an
opportunity
to
perform
and
some
more
specialized
ensembles.
We
have
jazz
ensemble
it
offered
in
our
schools.
Okay,
several
of
our
schools
now
have
steel,
drum
groups
and
and
guitar
performing
experiences.
We
have
a
music
technology
program
in
the
county.
That's
really
developing.
With
pno.
We
have
music
theory,
I
mean
there.
There
are
so
many
opportunities.
Whether
or
not
a
student
wants
to
pursue
music
as
a
career
is
not
really
the
focus
of
our
instruction.
C
A
There's
a
very
high
correlation
between
mathematics
and
music
and
so
anytime,
a
student
there.
There's
lots
and
lots
of
research
about
the
importance
of
the
Arts
and
I
could
stop
right
there,
but
mathematics
specifically
really
so
is
supported
by
music
integration
and
studying
so
those
experience
that
you
mentioned
you,
you
said
something
music
theory
and
music
technology.
Talk
to
me
a
little
bit
more
about
that.
So.
C
Our
music
music
theory
is
a
is
a
it's
really
one
of
those
courses.
Where
gives
students
the
opportunity
to
understand
what
I
would
often
refer
to
as
the
nuts
and
bolts
of
music,
where
it's
that
foundational
level
of
what
makes
music
structurally,
what
it
is?
Okay
and
then
the
music
technology
class.
C
A
Now
we're
talking
about
high
school,
and
that
says
you're
in
your
wheelhouse,
you
heard
everything
Dave
said
as
offered
at
the
comprehensive
school
and
I
would
imagine
broad
neck
also
affords
the
same
opportunities.
Let's
focus
in
on
the
PVA
experience
talk
to
me
a
little
bit
more
about
where
you
go
from
there.
Well.
D
D
So
in
our
extended
day
program.
We're
really
proud
of
the
fact
that
we've
built
this
this
catalog
of
offerings
for
students
that
they
actually
can
have
choice,
much
like
in
the
Community
College.
When
you
get
your
non-credit
course
studies
that
we
all
get
in
the
mail
each
year.
The
students
can
pick
the
course
of
studies
that
they
want
to
engage
in
at
studio
39.
So
a
music
student
could
choose
to
participate
in
a
music
project,
but
they
may
equally
choose
to
participate
in
a
dance
project
or
a
theater
project
or
a
visual
arts
project
and.
D
Cross
absolutely
it's
a
very
much
it's
very
much
a
focus
of
what
we
do
within
the
program
so
that
those
students
they
do
have
expert
skills
within
their
music
work,
but
also
that
they
have
a
functional
knowledge
of
the
other.
Art
forms
gain
experiences
in
those
art
forms
and
then
the
inverse
of
that
is
that
they
share
their
musical
expertise
with
the
students
in
those
other
art
forms.
D
D
So,
in
addition
to
being
able
to
perform
with
our
ensembles
within
our
collaborative
program
or
our
comprehensive
program,
rather
we
have
a
series
of
recitals
that
occur.
Okay,
each
semester,
so
we'll
have
aerial
recitals
in
which
the
band
students
or
the
string
students
or
the
vocal
students
or
the
piano
and
guitar
students
will
we'll
do
an
all-call
performance
where
they
will
have
a
public
performance
that
parents
and
the
community
as
a
whole
can
come
to.
We
also
do
numerous
performances
in
service
to
the
school
system.
D
So
if
there's
a
special
event
that
our
students
are
ready
to
go
at
any
time
with
with
a
body
of
work
that
they
can
bring
up
and
provide
service
to
the
school
system
as
well,
which
is
an
important
part
of
the
musical
experience,
is
that
we've
all
through
is
that,
yes,
we
do
have
concerts,
but
it's
also
important
that
we
recognize
that
music
in
our
culture
is
very
much
a
part
of
rites
of
passage,
whether
that
be
graduation
or
Awards,
and
so
our
students
are
always
ready
to
go
for
that.
I.
A
Am
proud
to
have
participated
in
evening
high
school
graduations
over
the
last
10
years
and
there's
always
a
representative
body
there
from
one
of
the
comprehensive
schools
that
plays
pomp
circumstance
and
and
those
sorts
of
things,
and
so
you
guys
you
afford
those
opportunities
to
those
schools.
Talk
to
me
a
little
bit
more
about
the
opportunities
to
perform
at
the
high
school
level,
David
that
are
non-traditional.
So
it's
not
the
concert
where
the
course
and
the
band
and
the
orchestra
perform
in
an
evening.
But
what
other
opportunities
are
there?
I
would
assume
some
live
theatre?
A
C
The
Anne
Arundel
County
Public
Library
during
the
art
and
music
in
our
schools
month
does
a
does
a
number
of
performances
where
there'll
be
art
display
and
gallery
showings
and
openings
and
there'll
be
live.
Music
from
our
students
will
be
there.
We
have
several
of
our.
Our
jazz
groups
will
go
out
and
they'll
do.
Events
where
they're
participating
in
I
think
I
did
the
the
Boat
Show
I
saw
one
of
the
groups
participating
in
which
really
touches
on
on
something.
That's
important
and
really
Paul
alluded
to
it
as
well.
C
C
It's
typically
the
month
of
March,
because
that
coincides
with
Music
and
Art
in
our
school
every
year.
So
people
can
look
to
the
you
know,
and
some
of
the
libraries
don't
have
the
space
to
be
able
to
take
a
whole
court
orchestra,
but
a
number
of
them
are
fielding
opportunities
for
our
performers.
Paul.
A
E
A
D
Our
students
are
teachers
that
work
during
the
school
day.
Our
prime
arts
teachers
are
our
teachers
that
are
the
fabulous
teachers
that
teach
in
any
of
our
high
schools
in
Anne,
Arundel
County
or
our
middle
schools
for
that
matter,
and
so
they're
certificated
musicians,
who
have
been
through
a
course
of
studies
to
become
a
music
educator.
D
Okay,
the
idea
of
having
the
extended
day
program,
though,
is
to
give
our
students
access
to
those
teachers
who
are
out
there
every
day,
being
the
practitioners
of
the
art
form
that
they
are
bringing
back
in
direct
contact
to
those
students.
So
I
can
tell
you
that
my
trumpet
teacher
he's
coming
from
playing
a
show
in
DC
and
walking
right
back
into
the
classroom
to
work
with
our
trumpet
students
and
bringing
that
instruction
and
that
knowledge
that
he's
putting
into
practice
every
day
right
back
to
work
with
those
students.
A
C
We
were
it's
amazing
to
me
when
I
see
in
social
media
settings
the
number
of
our
teachers
that
continue
to
make
music
an
important
part
of
their
life
from
a
performance
standpoint
and-
and
we
talked
about
with
our
teachers-
that
it's
important
to
stay
plugged
into
the
reason
they
got
into
this
profession.
In
the
first
place,
they
love
children,
but
music
was
the
content
area
that
they
wanted
to
share
and-
and
it's
it's
important
for
all
of
us,
as
musicians
to
maintain
connected
with
that
that
that
initial.
E
A
And
just
you
know,
we
encourage
the
opportunities
to
perform
and
be
on
with
with
friends
or
solos,
but
also
to
have
the
teachers
that
stand
in
front
of
them
day
in
and
day
out
that
we
continue
to
maintain
that
level
of
experience.
I
think
that's
got
to
be
so
much
bring
so
much
value
to
the
educational
experience.
Can
you
talk
to
that
for
a
second
I
think.
C
What
it
does
is
for
kids,
it
makes
it
credible
they
they
feel
like
they
are
interacting
not
only
with
an
educator
but
with
a
musician,
and
when
you
aspire
as
a
young
person
to
be
a
musician
anything
that
you
can
have
as
a
role
model.
A
positive
role
model
in
that
regard
and-
and
we
have
220
of
the
finest
music
educators
anywhere
that
are
employed
here
in
Anne,
Arundel,
County
and
I-
couldn't
be
more
proud
of
them.
Paul
well,.
D
I
agree
100%,
that
what
I
see
from
all
of
our
students
is
the
pride
that
they
feel
in
performing
with
our
faculty
members.
When
we
have
these
recitals
and
these
performances,
all
of
our
teachers
at
one
point
or
another,
are
performing
on
stage
with
our
students
and
I.
Think
that
exactly
what
Dave
saying
is
it
lends
that
credibility
to
us
as
educators
for
our
students
to
see
us
continuing
to
be
practitioners
of
what
it
is
that
we're
asking
them
to
do?
That's.
A
Fantastic
Dave
I
would
be
remiss.
I
came
from
a
family
where
I
had
a
marching
band
brother,
who
that
was
his
life
from
as
early
as
he
started
course
through
college
we
haven't
talked
about
marching
band
and
that
experience
tell
me
about
the
marching
band
program
here
in
and
around
the
county.
What
that
means
to
our
to
our
community.
What
I
love.
C
About
our
program
is
that
there
are
12
high
schools
that
have
12
very
different,
marching
band
experiences
and
that's
cool
yeah.
We
have
some
schools
whose
focus
is
entirely
to
do
the
Friday
night
football
game
and
the
Saturday
parade,
and
that
gives
students
an
opportunity
to
plug
into
a
marching
band
activity
in
that
setting.
C
We
have
some
schools
that
are
very
much
invested
in
the
competitive,
marching
band
activity
and
model
their
work
after
the
drum
and
bugle
course
that,
yes
and
and
so
and
then
there's
anywhere
in
between
where
there's
a
balance
between
the
two
types
of
experiences.
So
all
of
our
programs,
you
know
the
students
and
the
band.
The
directors
have
a
significant
amount
of
commitment
in
that
regard.
One
of
the
partnerships
that
we've
recently
worked
through
is
is,
during
the
summer
time.
C
There's
a
drum
and
bugle
corps
show
that
takes
place
at
the
Naval
Academy,
and
our
school
system
is
partnered
to
help
allow
the
groups
that
are
performing
an
opportunity
to
rehearse
in
our
schools
and
then
be
able
to
be
able
to
be
part
of
that
training.
Experience
because
there's
students
that
those
schools
are
able
to
come
in
watch
the
rehearsal
techniques
that
are
being
modeled
and
then
that
evening
get
a
chance
to
see
that
immediately
manifested
into
the
excellence
that
is
their
performance
at
the
Naval
Academy
Stadium.
C
A
C
That's
not
as
far
out
of
reach,
sometimes
when
you
see
whether
it
be
professional
musicians
or
professional
athletes
or
professional
whatever
the
career
may
be,
there's
a
sense
of
well
they're
over
there,
and-
and
this
really
gives
students
that
opportunity
to
see
that
this
is
just
real
people,
doing
it
they're
just
working
really
hard
to
make
it
great.
That's.
A
