From YouTube: October 2018 Parents Corner
Description
Johanna Doty, Programming & Outreach Coordinator, Anne Arundel County Public Library, talks about STEM and other programs that the Library offers.
A
Thank
you
for
joining
us
for
another
edition
of
parents
corner
today.
We
are
here
with
Juliana
Doty
she's,
the
new
programming
and
outreach
librarian
at
the
in
Toronto
County
Public
Library.
Today
it
is
so
nice
to
have
you
here
today.
Can
you
tell
us
just
a
little
bit
about
yourself?
We
were
talking
yeah.
B
Sure
so
I
started
out
by
teaching
in
the
schools.
I
was
an
ESL
teacher
in
Anne
Arundel
County
Public
Schools
for
two
years,
I
was
marlee
middle
school,
George,
Fox,
middle
middle
school,
Severna,
Park
middle
school
Magothy,
river
and
Severn
River
middle
school
in
those
two
years,
I
traveled
between
the
different
schools
and
then
after
that,
I
came
to
work
with
the
library
system.
B
B
So
stem
stands
for
science,
technology,
engineering
and
math
and
when
we
talk
about
it
in
the
schools
in
the
library
system,
we're
talking
about
wanting
to
expose
and
encourage
children
to
have
an
excitement
for
those
topics.
And
it's
really
an
important
field
because
it's
stem
is
and
everything
we
do
from
our
cell
phones
to
cooking
dinner
and
so
much
else.
All.
B
Sure
so
we
have
tons
of
stem
programming
all
year
round.
One
of
our
big
stem
initiatives
is
the
Maryland
stem
festival.
We
participate
every
year,
it
happens
in
October
and
we
have
different
programs
that
really
all
different
types
of
stem
and
we
tend
to
have
16
or
more
programs
throughout
our
branches
throughout
our
system
that
relate
to
stem
topics
in
those
two
weeks.
A
B
It
can
be
anything
and
everything
from
stem
night
at
Mountain
Road,
where
they
invite
in
the
Chesapeake
High
School
Robotics
team
to
things
like
a
stem
open
house
where
we
bring
out
all
of
the
do
cool
different
stem
equipment.
We
have
and
let
people
interact
with
it
and
play
with
it
and
get
to
just
experience
it.
So,
for
example,
you
might
get
to
play
with
some
3d
pens.
You
might
get
to
program
a
robot.
You
might
get
to
experience
some
virtual
reality
or
augmented
reality
equipment
as
well.
Wow.
B
Teenagers
yeah
look,
so
we
have
a
lot
of
different
stuff
that
is
open
to
everybody.
So,
for
example,
we
have
things
like
preschool
stem
storytime,
so
if
you've
ever
come
to
the
library
to
experience
one
of
our
story
times
before,
we
also
have
special
programs
that
are
just
for
that
stem
focus
and
it's
still
a
storytime.
But
then
the
kids
get
to
do
different
activities
that
might
be
related
to
engineering
or
chemistry
or
other
cool
things
like
that.
We
also
have
lots
of
elementary
middle
school
and
high
school
age
programs.
B
So
for
the
elementary
age
we
have
different
types
of
stuff
where
they
can
make
things
like
slime.
We
do
slime
programs.
Sometimes
we
have
coding
programs.
One
of
the
big
pushes
at
the
moment
is
maker
spaces
and
the
idea
of
just
being
creative
and
making
things
and
experimenting
with
new
materials.
So
we
have
programs
related
to
that
recently,
we've
started
doing
escape
room
programs,
which
are
a
lot
of
fun,
so
kids
can
come
in
and
they
get
to
experience
that
feeling
of
their.
B
They
have
to
find
a
solution
to
something
and
all
of
the
clues
are
within
the
room
and
they
have
to
find
those
clues
to
either
escape
the
room
or
open
a
chest
or
do
something
and
those
can
be
a
really
fun
program
and
we
have
to
do
things
like
Minecraft
programs,
and
we
have
robotics
and
coding
programs.
Things
like
that
as
well.
A
B
A
B
Yeah
that
works
absolutely
so
one
of
the
best
ways
of
finding
out
more
about
the
programs
we
offer
is
stopping
by
one
of
our
branches
and
picking
up
our
happenings
magazine,
which
tells
you
about
all
the
different
programs
that
we're
doing
for
a
couple
of
months.
So
right
now
there
might
be
a
fall
program,
there
might
be
a
fall
happenings
or
a
winter
happenings
or
spring
or
summer,
and
it's
going
to
tell
you
about
all
the
programs
all
throughout
our
library
system.
We
also
have
all
of
our
events
posted
online.
B
A
B
Depends
on
the
program
some
programs
like,
for
example,
minecraft,
tends
to
be
a
registration
program
because
we
have
a
limited
number
of
computers,
but
there
are
other
programs,
like
the
slime
programs,
we've
done
where
it's
just
whoever
wants
to
can
come
in
and
make
some
slime
and
all
of
our
programs.
If
there
is
a
registration
component,
will
list
that
out
and
they
start
taking
registration.
Two
weeks
before
the
program
itself.
Okay,.
A
B
Works
so
a
Wi-Fi
hotspot
is
a
small
little
device
that
you
can
use
in
your
home
on
the
go
at
work
wherever
you
need
it
and
it
provides
wireless
internet
connection
and
it
can
connect
here.
Can
we
get
computer,
your
phone
Oroku,
any
other
device?
That
means
the
internet
and
then
because
we
have
these
Wi-Fi
hotspots,
you
don't
even
need
to
have
a
internet
service
account
or
Internet
service
plan.
B
A
A
B
B
So
one
of
the
best
resources
we
have
for
students
in
anatole,
County,
Public
Schools,
is
our
sale
card
and
a
sale
card
is
a
virtual
library
card
that
every
student
in
Anne,
Arundel,
County,
Public
Schools,
has
it's
connected
to
their
student
number.
It
allows
them
to
check
out
three
books
at
a
time,
no
late
fees
or
fines,
and
they
still
have
access
to
all
of
our
online
resources
as
well.
So
if
you
have
more,
if
you're
interested
in
finding
out,
maybe
what
your
students
sale
account
number
is
or
more
information
about
it.
B
You
can
always
check
on
our
website
or
go
into
one
of
our
branches
to
find
out
more
information,
and
we
also
have
something
called
the
homework.
Center,
that's
a
page
on
our
website.
That
is
a
combination
of
all
of
our
online
databases
and
premium
resources
that
can
help
students
with
their
homework.
One
of
the
ones
I
like
to
share
with
as
many
people
as
possible
is
something
called
brain
feet.
Sorry
brain
fuse,
and
that
is
an
online
tutoring
resource.
That's
available
from
2:00
p.m.
B
until
midnight
every
day
and
students
can
log
on
using
their
regular
library
card
number
or
their
cell
card
number
and
talk
to
an
online
tutor.
So
it's
a
real
person
and
they
can
chat
with
them
and
ask
some
questions
about
their
math
homework
or
their
science
or
their
social
studies
or
anything
else.
You
can
imagine,
and
it's
also
offered
in
English
and
in
Spanish,
okay.
B
B
An
additional
card
and
what
we
like
to
explain
to
people
is
that,
with
a
regular
library
card,
you
can
check
out
99
items
at
a
time,
including
books,
DVDs
CDs,
anything
and
everything
that
is
available
in
our
library
system,
but
there
are
fines
associated
with
that
card.
If
anything
is
ever
over
deal
with
the
sale
card,
you
can
only
check
out
three
items
at
a
time,
but
there
are
no
late
fees
or
fines,
and
it
is
real.
B
It
is
focused
mainly
on
books,
so
you
wouldn't
be
able
to
check
out
a
DVD
with
it,
but
you
can
check
out
books
with
it.
So
for
someone
who
has
a
young
child
and
they're
concerned
about
due
dates
and
fines,
and
things
like
that,
the
sale
card
can
be
a
really
great
option
for
providing
those
students
access
to
our
library,
materials.
Okay,.
B
A
B
They
just
can
check
it
off
and
when
they
get
to
twenty-five
books
they
can
come
into
the
library
and
they
get
a
price
and
then
a
hundred
books,
two
hundred
so
on
and
so
forth.
They
can
come
into
the
library
and
get
a
sticker
that
celebrates
with
the
accomplishment
that
they've
made
and
then
a
thousand
books.
They
can
come
into
the
library
and
they
get
a
book
to
keep
and
take
home
forever
and
ever
and
ever
and
in
addition
to
that,
every
single
one
of
our
branches
has
our
early
literacy
story,
time
programs.
B
So
we
have
babies
in
bloom
for
children
that
are
birth
to
18
months.
We
have
our
toddler
time
programs,
which
are
for
eighteen
to
thirty
six
months
and
our
preschool
story
times
which
are
for
three
to
five
years,
and
those
programs
are
really
focused
on
building
those
early
literacy
skills.
So
there's
lots
of
singing
lots
of
dancing
lots
of
moving
lots
of
reading
books.
B
We
do
puppet
stories,
flannel
boards,
anything
and
everything
we
can
to
engage
those
young
learners
and
just
get
them
to
really
enjoy
reading
and
enjoy
learning
things
and
beyond
that,
as
I
mentioned
before
we
have
things
like
our
preschool
stem
story
times
throughout
the
library
system.
In
different
branches,
we
have
our
new
branch
at
the
mall
called
discoveries,
the
library
at
the
mall,
Saturday
Annapolis.
B
A
B
B
A
B
A
And,
and
just
thank
you
for
coming
out
and
and
telling
us
about
everything,
that's
extraordinary
how
much
the
library
is
offering
right
now
and
and
I
just
want
to
make
sure
parents
remember
that
they
can
get
the
information
online
or
look
for,
and
you
said
the
library
happening
magazine.
Yes,
all
the
libraries
have
and.
