My
job
is
to
make
sure
that
all
students,
regardless
of
race,
nationality,

religion,
gender
or
sexual
orientation
have

County,
Public,

I
would
also
like
to
welcome
you
to
Anne
Arundel
County
Public
Schools.
We
are
so
glad
you're
here,
hi.
A
I'm
Laura
Gardner,
the
English
language
learner,
family
and
community
outreach
manager
for
Anne
Arundel,
County,
Public
Schools.
Thanks
for
taking
the
time
to
watch
this
video,
it
has
been
shown
that
students
do
better
in
school
when
their
families
are
involved
in
their
children's
education.
This
video
will
provide
you
with
basic
information
about
Anne
Arundel,
County
Public
Schools,
and
will
also
show
you
ways
in
which
you
can
become
involved
in
your
children's
education.
Hello.
E
My
name
is
Jacqueline
winnows
I
am
a
bilingual
family
and
community
outreach
facilitator
for
Anne
Arundel
County
Public
Schools.
We
call
ourselves
bilingual
facilitators.
For
short,
we
are
all
bilingual
bicultural
employees
who
work
at
schools
to
help
with
interpretation
and
translation.
We
also
serve
as
cultural
liaisons
to
explain
how
schools
work
in
the
United
States
and
specifically
in
Anne
Arundel
County
Maryland
as
you've
probably
already
noticed,
schools
do
not
operate
the
same
way
in
every
country.
Our
team
includes
speakers
of
many
different
languages,
though
the
majority
of
the
team's
speak
Spanish.
E
When
you
come
to
your
child's
school,
we
are
happy
to
greet
you
and
to
help
answer
any
questions
you
may
have
much
of
the
information
in
this
video
is
covered
in
detail
in
the
parent
and
student
handbooks
published
each
year,
but
this
video
captures
the
most
important
information
you
need
right
now,
as
you
are
getting
started
with
a
a
CPS.
In
addition,
this
video
provides
families
with
access
to
this
crucial
information
in
an
oral
format
and
in
as
many
languages
as
possible.
B
Registration,
if
a
language
other
than
English
has
spoken
in
your
home
or
your
child
attended
a
school
in
another
country,
you
will
need
to
register
by
appointment
at
the
International
Student
Services
office
or
the
ISS.
Oh,
you
can
call
to
make
an
appointment
or
to
get
more
information
at
4:10
to
six
three.
Six
four
to
zero
information
can
also
be
found
on
the
a
a
CPS
website
to
register
your
student.
B
You
will
need
the
following:
an
original
birth
certificate
or
passport
immunization
record
recent
school
records,
Alysse
mortgage
document,
deed
or
title
a
recent
utility
bill
or
a
current
bank
statement.
If
the

apartment
that
you
are
renting
or
leasing
is
not
in
your

will
be
needed
to
be
included
with
your

Please
know
that
you
cannot
attend
school
without
proof
of
required.
Immunizations.
A
knurled
of
county
has
two
immunization
clinics
that
can
assist
in
obtaining
required
immunizations.
They
are
located
in
Annapolis
and
Glen
Burnie.
B
Most
students
coming
from
other
countries
are
required
to
have
a
tuberculosis
test
done.
You
will
need
to
call
your
local
health
clinic
to
schedule
an
appointment
for
immunizations
in
animal
County,
as
well
as
most
of
the
United
States.
The
elementary
schools
have
grades
kindergarten
through
fifth,
the
middle
schools
have
six
through
eight
grades
and
the
high
schools
have
9th
through
12th
grades.
Your
child
will
attend
the
school
assigned
by
your
area
or
rez.
B
Sometimes
it
is
called
your
home
school
or
neighborhood
school
after
you
visit
the
ISS.
Oh,
you
will
need
to
complete
the
enrollment
process
at
your
child's
home
school.
All
parents
and
visitors
must
report
to
the
main
office.
Before
proceeding
into
a
school.
You
will
be
required
to
provide
valid
photo
identification.
If
you
don't
have
any
type
of
identification
issued
in
the
United
States.
You
can
show
your
passport
or
other
ID
issued
in
your
home
country.
A
Different
types
of
personnel
every
school
has
different
types
of
personnel,
many
of
which
will
be
familiar
to
you.
For
example,
each
school
has
a
principal
and
teachers.
Every
school
has
at
least
one
secretary.
Who
is
the
first
person
you
will
meet
when
visiting
a
school.
There
are
other
types
of
personnel.
You
may
be
less
familiar
with.
School
nurses
help
students
when
they
are
sick,
school
counselors
help
students
with
their
feelings,
behavior
and
academic
issues.
A
School
psychologists
also
help
students
with
their
feelings
and
behavior,
and
they
also
help
assess
students
for
disabilities
or
difficulties
with
learning
pupil
personnel
workers
get
involved
with
students
when
there
are
issues
related
to
custody,
residency,
homelessness
and
attendance.
If
there
are
others
working
at
the
school
with
responsibilities,
you
are
not
familiar
with,
don't
be
afraid
to
ask
questions.
B
Calendar
scheduled
attendance
the
school
year
last
ten
months
from
mid-august
to
mid-june.
You
can
access
a
school
calendar
on
the
a
a
CPS
website,
get
a
copy
from
your
child's
school
or
ask
your
bilingual
facilitator
on
a
regular
school
day
classes
generally
last
about
six
and
a
half
hours.
The
start
and
finish
times
will
vary
based
on
whether
the
school
is
elementary
middle
or
high
school.
B
B
There
was
a
recent
law
passed
that
increased
the
required
age
of
attendance
from
16
to
18,
so
as
of
July
1st
2017,
all
students
must
attend
school
until
age
18
students
may
miss
school
due
to
illness,
a
death
in
the
family,
religious
holidays,
court,
suspension,
state
emergency,
a
lack
of
authorized
transportation
or
a
visit
with
a
parent
or
guardian,
who
is
an
active
duty.
Member
of
a
uniformed
services
and
has
been
called
for
duty
going
on
vacation
is
not
illegal
absence.
B
Keep
in
mind
that
schools
remain
in
session
when
it's
raining
and
even
sometimes
when
it's
snowing,
so
please
make
sure
your
child
dresses
appropriately
for
the
weather
during
winter.
Your
child
needs
a
heavy
coat
hat
and
gloves
if
your
child
is
sick
or
needs
to
miss
school
for
any
other
reason,
please
provide
a
written
note
for
your
child
when
they
return.
Furthermore,
a
doctor's
note
is
required
for
illnesses
in
excess
of
five
consecutive
school
days.
B
If
your
child
is
absent
or
late
from
school,
you
will
receive
an
automated
voice
message
or
email
to
inform
you
of
your
child's
absence
or
tardy
a
truant
student
is
any
student
absent
15
days
in
a
semester
without
a
lawful
cause,
a
parent
or
guardian
of
a
truant
student
may
be
contacted
by
a
people.
Personnel
worker
excessive
absences
may
result
in
recommendation
for
retention.
A
Uniforms
and
supplies
some
schools
require
students
to
wear
a
uniform
that
must
be
purchased
scarves
or
other
head
wear
will
only
be
allowed
for
health
safety
or
religious
reasons.
Most
schools
also
require
some
sort
of
uniform
to
be
worn
for
physical
education
or
gym
class.
Some
schools
may
ask
students
to
purchase
their
gym
uniform,
while
others
ask
that
students
provide
their
own
clothes,
such
as
shorts
and
a
t-shirt.
All
students
need
supplies
such
as
paper
and
pencils
to
do
their
work.
A
Families
are
provided
with
a
list
of
school
supplies,
their
child
needs
based
on
their
child's
grade
and
teacher.
If
you
cannot
afford
to
purchase
a
uniform
or
school
supplies,
talk
with
the
school
counselor
about
options
that
may
be
available,
sometimes
back-to-school
events
over
the
summer
also
provide
free
school
supplies.
B
Transportation
in
Anne,
Arundel
County,
as
well
as
most
of
the
United
States
school
buses,
are
yellow
bus
transportation
is
provided
to
and
from
school
for
free
for
all
students
who
live
outside
of
a
certain
radius.
That
radius
is
half
a
mile
for
kindergarten.
One
mile
for
elementary
school
and
one
and
a
half
miles
for
middle
and
high
school
students
are
not
permitted
to
switch
buses.
Information
about
your
child's
bus
stop
is
available
at
WWE,
CPS,
org
and
late
August,
or
at
your
child's
school.
A
Meals,
all
AAA
cps
schools
offer
breakfast
and
lunch
daily
to
students
at
full
price,
reduced
price
or
at
no
cost,
depending
on
eligibility
standards
established
by
the
federal
government
to
apply
for
free
and
reduced-priced
meals,
complete
a
paper
application
or
apply
online.
You
should
complete
one
application
for
all
children
in
your
household
if
your
child
will
be
buying
his
or
her
lunch.
Parents
may
deposit
money
by
setting
up
a
prepaid
account
online
or
by
sending
cash
or
check
made
payable
to
your
school
name.
Students
may
also
pack
their
lunch.
B
Communication
with
parents,
it
is
extremely
important
that
you
always
provide
your
child's
school
with
updated
contact
information.
If
your
phone
number
changes-
and
you
do
not
let
the
school
know
about
it,
it
will
be
very
difficult
to
get
a
hold
of
you
if
your
child
is
sick
or
there
is
an
emergency.
If
your
address
changes
know
that
it
cannot
be
changed
in
the
school
district's
database
until
a
copy
of
a
lease
mortgage
document,
deed
or
title
is
presented
to
the
school.
B
If
you
need
to
communicate
with
someone
at
your
child's
school
in
a
language
other
than
English,
there
are
a
few
options.
The
first
option
is
to
use
the
school's
bilingual
facilitator.
If
they
are
not
present
or
there
isn't
a
bilingual
facilitator
in
your
language,
you
can
communicate
with
the
school
staff
through
an
interpreter.
A
a
CPS
has
a
department
that
coordinates
hourly
interpreters
in
dozens
of
languages.
B
Each
school
has
the
ability
to
submit
an
interpreter
request,
but
it
must
be
done
with
at
least
a
few
days
notice
if
you
need
to
communicate
with
someone
more
immediately.
School
staff
can
use
a
phone
interpretation
system
called
language
link.
If
you
are
not
comfortable
or
able
to
express
that,
you
need
this
service,
you
can
Kari
and
I
speak
card
with
you
that
indicate
your
language
and
need
for
an
interpreter.
B
One
of
the
main
ways
that
schools
communicate
with
parents
is
through
a
system
called
connect
ed.
This
is
a
system
that
provides
information
from
school
to
parents
through
automated
voice,
mails
text,
messages
and
emails.
It
is
important
that
you
listen
to
these
messages
carefully,
as
they
often
contain
information
about
early
dismissals,
inclement,
weather
and
so
on.
Sometimes
these
messages
are
sent
out
in
languages
other
than
English.
You
can
call
your
bilingual
facilitator
if
you
do
not
understand
the
message
or
call
the
school
and
ask
for
clarification
with
the
help
of
language
link.
B
If
you
have
access
to
the
Internet,
you
can
always
check
the
a
a
CPS
website
at
WWE,
so
rg4
information
related
to
schools,
events
and
activities.
Some
of
the
information
is
translated
into
various
languages.
A
ACPs
also
has
countywide
Facebook
and
Twitter
pages,
and
most
schools
also
have
them
too.
A
Curriculum
and
instruction,
so
you
might
be
wondering
what
will
your
child
learn?
What
classes
will
he
or
she
take
students
who
speak
a
language
other
than
English
at
home
are
given
a
test
to
determine
their
English
proficiency
level
based
on
the
results
of
the
test
they
may
qualify
for
the
English
language
acquisition
program
in
some
schools,
English
language
learners
may
be
taught
in
small
classes,
with
other
such
students
in
other
schools.
A
English
language
learners
are
taught
in
co-taught
classes,
with
one
English
language
acquisition
teacher
and
a
second
teacher
who
is
an
expert
on
that
particular
subject
in
elementary
school
students
are
guided
and
engaged
in
a
comprehensive
curriculum
for
reading
and
language
arts,
mathematics,
social
studies
and
science.
In
addition
to
these
core
subject
areas,
all
students
participate,
weekly
in
art,
music,
physical
education
and
library,
media
instruction
in
middle
school
students
take
English
language,
arts,
mathematics,
science
and
social
studies
daily
for
the
entire
year.
A
Physical
education
and
health
is
also
a
required
course
and
is
offered
on
a
rotating
day
basis
in
all
three
grade
levels
in
high
school,
most
students
take
8
classes,
which
is
each
approximately
80
minutes.
Long
on
an
a
day,
/be
day
rotation
each
year,
a
ACPs
has
requirements
in
order
for
students
to
graduate
a
student
must
earn
26
credits
to
graduate
from
high
school
and
pass
the
required
State
graduation
exams.
The
26
credits
include
for
English
for
math
3,
social
studies
and
3
science,
physical,
education,
art
and
technology
need
one
credit.
Each
also.
A
A
student
will
need
a
half,
a
credit
for
health
and
eight
and
a
half
credits
for
electives.
The
student
also
needs
to
complete
approved
student
service
learning
activities
consisting
of
75
hours
of
community
service,
a
ACPs
and
most
parts
of
the
United
States.
The
grading
scale
is
as
follows:
in
a
is
ninety
two
hundred
percent,
a
B
is
80
to
89
percent.
A
C
is
70
to
79
percent,
a
D
is
60
to
69
percent
and
anything
below
sixty
percent
is
failing.
A
At
the
high
school
level,
a
GPA
is
calculated
which
stands
for
grade
point
average.
Your
child
will
receive
a
report
card
four
times
a
year.
At
the
end
of
each
nine
week,
marking
period,
the
last
report
card
of
the
year
will
be
mailed
home
interim
reports
are
also
sent
home
at
the
end
of
the
fifth
week
of
each
nine
week
marking
period.
You
can
also
check
your
child's
progress
with
an
online
tool
called
parent
connect.
A
Special
education
services
are
also
provided
to
students
with
identified
educational
disabilities.
If
you
are
concerned
about
your
child's
progress
or
suspect
that
your
child
may
have
a
disability,
please
let
your
child's
teacher
or
principal
know
so
that
a
meeting
can
be
set
to
discuss
your
concerns.
B
Programs
of
choice,
programs
of
choice
provides
students
with
specialized
curricular
and
co-curricular
activities
that
meet
their
specific
intellectual
interests
and
needs.
For
example,
some
programs
focus
on
health,
while
others
focus
on
the
arts
and
even
science
and
engineering.
Many
of
these
programs
are
called
magnet.
Programs
and
students
apply
for
those
when
they
are
in
the
fifth
or
eighth
grade.
There
are
informational
sessions
about
these
in
September
and
October
each
year.
There
are
many
other
options
for
programs
of
choice,
but
more
information
that
can
be
provided
here.
A
Rules
and
safe
and
orderly
schools.
Let's
talk
a
bit
about
rules.
The
most
important
rules
are
that
weapons,
alcohol
and
drugs
are
prohibited
at
the
bus,
stop
on
the
school
bus
in
school
and
at
all
school
related
functions.
All
high
school
buildings
have
an
office
of
police
officers.
The
school
resource
officers
are
responsible
to
ensure
a
safe
and
secure
school
environment.
Ask
your
school
principal
what
the
policy
is
regarding
electronic
devices
in
schools,
cell
phones
are
allowed
for
instructional
purposes
at
the
discretion
of
the
administration
and
school
faculty.
A
It
is
also
important
to
know
that
a
a
CPS
is
committed
to
providing
students
with
an
orderly
learning
environment
that
is
free
from
bullying
and
cyber
bullying.
Harassment
and
intimidation,
hazing

bias-motivated
behavior
bias-motivated
behavior
may
be
related
to
ethnic
or
national
origin,
race,
disability,
sexual
orientation,
religion
or
gender.
There
are
processes
in
place
for
addressing
any
of
these
types
of
actions
which
affect
learning.
If
you
learned
that
your
child
is
being
bullied
or
harassed,
contact,
the
teacher
school,
counselor
or
administrator.
B
Medical
and
health
issues,
if
your
child
needs
to
take
medication
during
school
on
a
regular
basis,
talk
to
the
school
nurse
parents
and
physicians,
must
complete
the
parents
request
to
administer
medication
at
school
in
order
for
the
student
to
have
a
medication
administered
you'll
also
want
to
inform
the
school
nurse
of
the
pertinent
information
about
your
child's
health
needs,
such
as
allergies,
asthma
or
diabetes.
Also,
please
remember
if
your
child
is
absent
due
to
illness
or
medical
appointments.
Please
provide
a
note
to
the
school.
A
Family
and
community
involvement
in
some
countries,
it
is
seen
as
disrespectful
if
parents
visit
their
child's
school
or
ask
the
teacher
questions
here
in
the
United
States.
It's
the
opposite.
Parents
are
welcome
and
encouraged
to
visit
their
child's
school
and
to
regularly
communicate
with
their
child's
teacher.
There
are
many
ways
in
which
you
can
be
involved
in
your
child's
education.
If
your
child
is
in
an
elementary
or
middle
school,
you
will
be
invited
to
a
parent-teacher
conference
twice
a
year.
This
is
a
short
meeting
with
you,
the
teacher
and
an
interpreter
if
needed.
A
The
teacher
will
update
you
on
the
progress
of
your
child
and
it's
an
opportunity
to
get
to
know
the
teacher
and
ask
questions.
In
addition
to
these
set
times
a
parent
or
guardian
may
request
a
meeting
with
a
teacher
at
any
time.
Another
way
to
be
involved
is
to
regularly
check
your
child's
backpack
or
folder
for
information.
Many
schools
send
newsletters
and
fliers
home
about
what's
going
on
in
school
in
the
community.
Some
of
these
will
be
translated
if
you
need
help
understanding
something
sent
home
in
your
child's
backpack.
A
Ask
your
bilingual
facilitator
or
talk
to
someone
at
the
school
through
language
link,
some
schools
offer
workshops
about
things
like
parenting
or
how
to
help
your
child
with
their
homework.
Some
of
these
workshops
are
specifically
for
international
parents,
and
you
can
expect
to
receive
translated
flyers
about
those.
These
meetings
and
workshops
are
a
great
opportunity
for
you
to
learn
how
to
best
help
your
child
and
an
opportunity
to
meet
other
international
parents.
A
Another
opportunity
to
get
involved
is
to
volunteer
at
your
child's
school.
While
volunteering,
you
may
be
asked
to
help
cut
things
out
for
the
teacher
to
read
to
children
or
anything
else.
The
school
might
need
help
with
every
school
has
a
volunteer
coordinator.
You
can
speak
with
to
begin.
Most
schools
also
have
a
parent-teacher,
Association
or
PTA,
which
is
a
group
of
parents
that
works
together
to
advocate
for
their
children's
education.
They
work
together
with
the
schools,
to
provide
resources
and
programs
to
all
families.
A
You
can
also
be
involved
in
your
child's
education
by
support
during
their
academic
success
at
home.
You
can
do
this
by
talking
to
your
child,
about
the
value
of
education,
creating
a
place
for
them
to
do
homework
and
studying
monitoring
homework,
to
be
sure,
it's
completed
and
limiting
TV
and
screen
time.
It
is
also
very
helpful
if
you
regularly
read
to
your
child
in
their
native
language.
A
B
Cultural
adjustment,
if
you
are
new
to
the
United
States
you
and
your
child,
may
experience
some
challenges
when
adjusting
to
the
culture.
Some
people
refer
to
this
anxiety
and
difficulty
as
culture
shock.
It
typically
sets
in
after
the
first
few
weeks
of
coming
to
a
new
place,
it's
important
for
students
and
families
to
know
that
some
difficulty
in
adjusting
is
totally
normal
and
it
can
take
time
to
adjust.
If
your
child
would
like
to
talk
to
someone
about
what
they're
going
through,
they
can
talk
to
a
school
counselor.
A
After-School
activities
some
days
of
the
week
are
designated
for
students
to
stay
after
school
for
tutoring
clubs
or
sports.
A
responsible
adult
will
stay
with
your
student
during
this
time
and
written
parents
consent
is
required
to
stay
after
school.
Students
may
ride
the
activity,
bus
to
go
back
home
field.
B
Trip
most
students
go
on
field
trips,
a
couple
of
times
each
year.
For
example,
a
class
might
visit
the
zoo
if
they
are
learning
about
animals
field
trips,
enhance
students,
learning
and
provide
them
with
an
opportunity
to
see
up-close
something
they
are
learning
about.
In
the
classroom,
most
field
trips
will
need
chaperones,
which
are
extra
adults
such
as
family
members,
to
help
watch
the
students,
while
on
the
trip,
if
you
are
interested
in
chaperoning
a
trip,
you
must
get
a
background
check
done
at
least
two
weeks
before
the
trip.
Thank
you
for
joining
us
for.
