Rahul Singh of COMPANY presents “Making Cassandra Easy” on how there are a few things that make Cassandra hard for most. These pains are tough for newbies to learn to deal with. Rahul will cover "what if" scenarios that would a) make Cassandra easier for new people b) make Cassandra appealing for people who don't use it yet and c) Make Cassandra the de-facto database for any new digital platform.

So that's that is a very long time uh in cassandra years uh and has been contributing to the community by publishing cassandra.link, really great, read there and running a weekly cassandra lunch for almost uh a year, so awesome work there and I believe rules also gotten involved in the cassandra comm kubernetes uh sig and is helping um update with blog updates and that kind of thing as well roles talk, is about making cassandra easy right uh and we're certainly hoping that 4.0.

Does that for you as well, um but I think raoul has a bunch of awesome ideas as well around this and so we'll kind of go through some really exciting what-if scenarios. So with that raul over to you, man.

Hey everybody um thank you ben melissa, for hosting co-hosting and uh that made for us. um You know I love sandra because it has great potential. It's one of those technologies where, once you understand it, you're, just like. Oh my god, this is what it does and then you realize all these huge companies are using it and then you're like of course they're using it, because there's no other technology that can do it. I tell people the big companies in the world.

Cassandra is the last station on the train track like eventually you have to use it. There's really nothing else going on in terms of the open source world that can, you know, compete so super glad to be here uh my day, job. uh You know, I build uh design platforms and these days I'm training, architects, engineers and operators, and so um you know my job is now becoming not necessarily building the platforms but building up the people that are building the platform so like to say.

I help people build platforms that run the world and I'm super glad that technology has come to a point where, as you know, um uh autumn was saying it's available. It's open source technology used to be inside these big commercial companies that only a few people could access right, um and so now it's available to everybody.

So initially this talk was titled, make cassandra easy. Then I was as I was, putting together a deck. I was like I edit awesome cassandra and I talk about how awesome cassandra is so why not? Let's, let's re-title this, let's call this make a center awesome. um You know the biggest thing that I've seen in in cassandra is that it's a technology that can eventually meet the original promise of the internet.

Did you know the internet was originally called the intergalactic computer network, because jcr lick lighter did not have any better name, so he was like I'm at a loss for a name. You can read the white paper right, so anyways cassandra is great. A lot of people use it, um but what I would like to show you is seven things that could make it not only easy but awesome for people specifically engineers and operators. I think architects, you kind of expect them to know everything, but developers and operators. They have hard jobs.

They're dealing with different clouds different hardware: um they have a lot of work to do and if we can make it easier, then there will be more people using it and when more people use it, there will be more users that give us feedback to make it even better. So from from my standpoint, the technology itself at cassandra is awesome.

The question now is how to make it more user friendly right. So when I was like, I don't know, 16 17 years old, I started using phpmyadmin to learn my sql, like that, was the database to use other than microsoft access. When you were a kid and because I used phpmysql, I learned all of the sql statements. I learned how to alter fields. I wish that new people that are coming to cassandra could have something as simple as phpmyadmin.

It doesn't even have to be that that fancy right just simple to edit the schemas and edit the data. The next thing that I hope in the next few years, especially with the virtual tables in cassandra 4.0, is some sort of basic web interface that shows people the status of the cluster. That shows people the no tool information on the cluster without having to go through ssh right without having to go onto the console and type it up. I mean I love typing in no tool.

It makes me feel badass but honestly to be able to just go click on like solar, for example, right, not a great interface, I'm not hating on it, but it's pretty simple right: it works um okay. Now I know that a lot of people that are seasoned professionals, uh operators, they're, like oh, just use, ansible just use kubernetes just use. You know blah blah blah blah blah right. Most people that are starting off they're, not born with a silver spoon in their mouth.

They don't know ansible and kubernetes, but what we want to do is to give them a simple tool to get started. There's existing stuff like the config management uh library, the data stacks uh open source that can be used to make this right um web-based table.

Data profiler now this is kind of getting ahead of the curve right. Not a lot of databases give you this, but we're not just talking about making consider easy right, we're talking about making it awesome. So wouldn't it be nice if you could just go to an interface and say show me the table. Stats in visual form show me the data skew or let's take a look at the data on a particular table. How are the partitions you know distributed right, just think about it.

We solve problems where, eventually you got to show people a picture, give them the picture, don't have to make it now. This is a wishlist item from data analysts um at first I was thinking I don't know if I want to put that workload on cassandra, but the.

Can have multiple data centers, so, however, we do it, I don't know, but it would be so dope just to be able to have materialized joined views, and all we have to do is update the source tables and magically the joined. Views are materializing at all times and nobody has to write any smart code. um Finally, well not. Finally, scriptable uh triggers the triggers of right, they're, manageable. You gotta compile some code. Maybe you just write some kotlin javascript. You know whatever you want jvm language, but really I want to do like an on insert.

Do this other insert or on an update. Do this delete thing right and yeah it could. It could complicate things, but that's what makes you know uh uh current databases, so so usable right now, right you do everything in the database and then finally, the like the biggest problem. I have at clients that I've worked with, and all of my co-workers is that everybody has this wide partition problem every single pro. You know, big cluster, that's been around for a while, has a wide partition problem. What can we do? I don't know so.

I'm just calling it auto magic partitions. There may be different technologies that can make it happen, but if we could just like put data and have it magically distributed, have it magically indexed internally and nobody has to be the wiser that'd be awesome.

And finally, I want to give a shout out to cedric london cedric ha was a close tie with uh to patrick in terms of your influence on me, but cedric uh deserves a shout out, he's been doing a great job of putting things out uh on the data stacks workshops making uh you know cassandra more accessible, and the final thought I want to give you is imagine the intergalactic computer network, the intergalactic computer network.

Today we run data centers around the world, maybe the next 10 years of constant we're going to be running data centers on the moon, mars and earth, and maybe the next 100 years. Some variant of cassandra could be running on other galaxies thanks everybody appreciate it. Thank you for everything.
