In this edition of Around Arlington, the County Board kicks off 2017 with it's traditional Organizational Meeting, nominating Jay Fisette for Board Chair, and Katie Cristol as Vice-Chair. It's also time to get ready for winter weather, and in a new "Street Beat" segment, we look back on a year's worth of paving efforts. The county will be closed twice in the coming week for MLK Day and the Presidential Inauguration. And on Sunday, January 15th, the 48th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial tribute will take place at Wakefield High School.

The Arlington County Board, swung into action for the new year by elected. A new chair and vice-chair for 2017 will tell you all about that coming up, but first, as we head into winter here in Arlington, make sure you're prepared for the worst weather. That comes our way when storms are in the forecast to help plows navigate our busy Arlington streets.

We're encouraging drivers to park on the odd-numbered side of the street, where feasible parking on the even side is ok to just work with your neighbors to pick a side of the street in advance of a significant cell event. We're also going to be piloting a new program this year to put more plows on the streets during snowfalls, greater than 6 inches, to learn more about the county's plan for snow events, watch our new snow PSAs here in Arlington TV, or go to emergency arlington, VA us and click on the weather tab.

But before those plows hit the streets in 2017, our friends at des took a look back on all the street work they managed to accomplish in 2016. In this week's edition of street beat.

Over the warmer months, our crews were busy at work, paving several streets in Arlington to ensure our roadways are in safe and good condition. You may have noticed paving crews in and around your neighborhood and here, to tell us more- is Harry Wong bureau chief for water streets, hi Harry, I, horio Jessica good! Thank you. So what can you tell us about the 2016 paving program? Thank.

You we have done the real good job, this season, by paving 89 on for nee miles or 339 blocks, and in article county we have 974 Lane miles of streets, and this year we paved about 9.2 percent of the total wow.

That's great, that's really impressive, and what were some of the major projects that you guys did.

Mostly of our terrorist streets, paved arlington, boulevard, patrick henry columbia, pike and parts of the military roads, and also a lot of residential blocks that we have paid and.

What about potholes key tell us how many potholes you repaired this year, yeah.

This year from January through August, we have repaired 7300 puddles. That's.

Yes and we're getting ready to stay on top of what's being damaged on this winter. Well,.

That the only constant in life is change, but the pace and impacts have changed very greatly. This year is likely to bring dramatic unsettling changes in our national government and on the international scene. Arlington will feel some effects, but will respond, as we have before in times of turbulence and periods of more gradual change, with sensible actions inspired by our shared community vision and shaped through thoughtful dialogue and open debate, Arlington will continue to strive to create a more sustainable, equitable and a healthy community, a community that works and we'll do it together.

I want to reassure Arlen, Tony ins of all stripes, Hughes and homelands that Arlington will remain a welcoming and safe community. We value diversity and embrace people's differences as a source of this community's strength.

As a reminder, all county government offices and facilities will be closed on Monday January, sixteenth in commemoration of Martin Luther, King, jr., Day and again on Friday january twentieth for the presidential inauguration there will be regular trash pickup on both days and you can always find information on holiday, art, bus schedules, parking enforcement and more by visiting the holiday schedule page on our website and, of course, MLK. Day means it's time for our annual tribute to dr. King, which will be held sunday january fifteenth at wakefield high school from five to 630 p.m.
