Description
A fun look at the hi-tech Shirlington Library in Arlington VA
A
C
Well,
the
old
library
was
small.
You
know,
we've
been
here
in
this
look
in
this
area
since
nineteen
forty
eight
and
it
started
off
as
three
rented
rooms
on
the
second
floor
of
a
building
and
the
community
was
growing
and
was
an
opportunity
to
really
kind
of
pull
the
community
together
around
the
library
because
we
like
to
say
it
takes
a
library
to
complete
a
village.
We
wanted
to
expand
the
collection
and
offer
more
services
we
were
lucky
was
originally
supposed
to
be
just
a
small
one
story,
but
then
the
theater
came
in
on
top.
C
A
D
You
first
walk
into
the
building.
You
get
the
feeling
that
it's
very
high
tech
and
it
is.
We
have
26
public
access,
pcs
for
adults
to
use
and
some
pcs
in
the
children's
room
for
the
kids
to
use
when
you
walk
further
into
the
building.
There's
some
soft
cushy
chairs
and
wireless
access.
So
you
can
sit
down
with
your
laptop
and
your
cup
of
coffee
and
get
to
work.
E
Yeah
we
have
two
projects
here
associated
with
a
library
that,
when
going
on
for
several
years-
and
now
today,
we
can
consider
them
complete
a
wonderful.
What
are
they
well,
we
have
two
projects,
one
of
them
by
a
local
artist
named
martha
jackson,
jarvis,
and
she
has
a
piece,
a
fountain
of
mosaic
fountain.
We
saw
that
when
I
came
in
it's
beautiful,
but
it's
wonderful.
She
studied
mosaics
and
I'm
Ravenna
Italy,
and
this
piece
incorporates
stone
and
glass
tile
and
ceramic
tile
to
make
a
fountain
that
reflects
four
mile
run,
which
is
close
five.
E
E
One,
the
second
one
is
a
two-part
piece,
it's
by
an
Austrian
artists,
Erwin
Redl,
who
lives
in
New
York
City,
and
it
consists
of
four
very
large
two
LED
bands,
one
on
the
front
monumental
wall
of
the
entrance
and
three
back
in
the
Zen
garden
area.
It's
called
slow
because
it's
an
animated,
LED
installation
of
flows
from
the
ground,
up
toward
the
sky
and
at
64
feet
tall
on
the
front
all,
and
there
are
three
shorter
ones
back
in
the
Zen
garden
and
what
the
artist
is.
F
It's
a
building
that
has
both
the
library
as
well
as
the
theater.
On
top
it
was
intended
to
be
a
state
of
the
art
library,
one
that
the
cultural
facility,
as
well
as
something
that
would
fit
with
the
experimental
nature
of
signature
theatre.
So
that
you
see
a
lot
of
finishes,
you
see,
exposed
concrete.
You
see
a
lot
of
color
a
kind
of
excitement.
Hopefully
it's
a
different
kind
of
a
library
barrington.
It's
not
a
particularly
traditional
library.
You
notice
that
there's
no
service
desk
I
may.
C
F
G
Don't
stamp
them
anymore,
we
do
our
f
IG.
What
is
RFID,
radio
frequency
identification?
We
scan
your
card
and
then
we
just
put
the
books
on
this
table,
so
we
we
thought
them
read
in
and
we're
going
to
hit
the
continue
button.
It's
going
to
print
your
due
dates
and
done,
and
your
receipts
going
to
print
right.
There.
