From YouTube: Chairman Zimmerman's Story Initiative
Description
At the 2011 January 1 County Board meeting, Chairman, Chris Zimmerman laid out his plans for the year, in this clip he tells us why it is important to 'Tell Arlington's Story'.
A
Creating
a
great
community
is
not
only
about
buildings
and
streets,
economics
and
regulation.
It's
about
people
and
aspirations,
collaborating
uniting
and
forming
a
shared
sense
of
identity.
Cultivating
that
sense
means
understanding
where
we
came
from
and
who
we
are
collectively.
It
means
listening
to
many
voices
and
different
means
of
expression.
This
is
why
culture
and
history
are
so
important.
It's
also
fun.
A
Arlington's
cultural
life
is
enriched
by
growing
art
by
a
growing
arts
repertoire
recently
enhanced
by
the
addition
of
the
artists
fear
and
by
an
emerging
self-awareness
of
our
community
as
a
unique
place
with
its
own,
unique
history.
2011
marks
the
first
year
of
observation
of
the
civil
war.
Sesquicentennial
arlington
had
a
role
to
play
in
our
nation's
most
defining
conflict
150
years
ago,
and
we
will
participate
in
commemorative
and
commemorative
activities
this
year.
But
Arlington
enjoys
a
living
history,
a
story
unfolding
before
us,
even
as
we
live
it.
A
Today's
arlington
has
grown
from
many
roots
some
planted
long
ago,
some
relatively
recently
a
century
ago.
It
remained
largely
rural
with
a
smattering
of
small
villages,
a
population
rise
in
the
mid
20th
century
fueled
by
the
New
Deal,
and
the
Second
World
War
brought
people
from
all
over
the
US
with
different
backgrounds.
A
late
century
influx
of
arrivals
from
around
the
globe
completed
a
transformation
to
the
wonderful
multicultural
community
we
now
enjoy.
A
A
This
year
we
will
initiate
a
new
effort
to
celebrate
Arlington's
rich
cultural
diversity
through
a
variety
of
events,
celebrations
and
storytelling.
We
will
invite
people
from
across
the
community
to
share
their
experiences.
Their
music,
their
culture
to
tell
Arlington
story
by
sharing
their
own
will
build
on
existing
programming
and
events
and
partner,
with
a
wide
variety
of
community
groups
to
find
ways
to
capture
a
living
history.
A
Celebrating
the
growth
of
our
diverse
community
will
look
for
volunteers
to
help
capture
compelling
stories
from
a
broad
section
of
the
arlington
community,
representing
a
wide
diversity
of
ages,
backgrounds,
histories,
cultures,
nationalities,
careers,
families
will
learn
from
our
neighbors,
both
young
and
old,
first
or
fifth
generation.
We
may
get
to
know
our
community
better
and
perhaps
deepen
our
appreciation
for
the
cultural
rich
richness
it
holds
and
we'll
have
some
fun.
