A
A
For
60
years,
this
stone
lay
in
place
on
the
west
side
of
the
Pentagon.
After
the
attack
on
the
Pentagon
in
2001,
the
stone
was
recovered
from
the
rubble
and
moved
to
Fort
McNair.
After
nearly
10
years,
it
is
being
presented
to
the
Arlington
County
Fire
Department,
in
recognition
of
its
service
on
September
11th
and
the
days
following
the
tragedy.
The
ceremony
took
place
on
March
24
that
fire
station
number
5.
The
presentation
was
made
by
major
general
Carl
R
Horst
commanding
general
of
the
US
Military
District
of
Washington.
This.
B
Morning,
the
first
800
pound
stone
is
presented
to
the
Arlington
County
Fire
Department,
in
recognition
for
their
bravery
and
their
perseverance
during
search
and
rescue
operations
at
the
Pentagon
as
the
first
emergency
responders
on
the
scene.
This
was
no
small
task.
It
was
a
building
on
fire.
It
was
a
sight
of
a
plane
crash.
He
was
a
hazardous
material
incident
and
a
collapsed
structure
wrapped
into
a
single,
horrific
and
catastrophic
event,
and.

B
D
Station
was
the
first
to
respond
and
arrive
within
about
two
minutes
of
the
airplane,
striking
the
building
they
initiated
Khmer.
In
the
end,
every
station
from
Arlington
County
was
deployed
for
the
response
and
we
were
assisted
greatly
by
our
partners
from
city
of
alexandria,
fairfax
county
prince
william
county
loudon
and
including
the
district
of
columbia,
responders
from
suburban
Maryland
and
to.

D
On
that
horrific
day,
the
nation
mourns
each
year
on
the
anniversary,
the
families
are
reminded
of
the
loss
each
and
every
day
we
have
a
responsibility
to
honor
their
memory
by
working
better
together
by
engaging
our
communities
and
preparedness
activities
and
never
forgetting
the
sacrifice
that
so
many
made
on
that
day.
It.
B
Is
an
honor
and
it
is
a
privilege
to
recognize
the
work
and
the
sacrifice
of
the
Arlington
County
Fire
Department
on
behalf
of
the
United
States
Army
Military
District
of
Washington,
and
today's
joint
force
headquarters.
National
capital
region,
which
was
literally
born
out
of
the
ashes
and
the
rubble
of
911.
E
Outside
here,
of
course,
we
also
have
a
gift
that
was
presented
last
year
from
New
York,
with
a
part
of
the
World
Trade
Center,
we're
working
now
to
design
an
appropriate
way
to
combine
these
two
very
important
elements
into
what
will
be
a
permanent
memorial,
an
appropriate
remembrance
for
those
who
lost
their
lives
nearly
10
years
ago
and
for
all
those
who
worked
heroically
to
save
so
many
more.
Thank
you
very
much.
