A
Hello,
I'm
helen
reinike
wilt
of
arlington
county's
initiative
to
rethink
energy
and
green
home
choice
program
you're
about
to
watch
one
of
a
series
of
videos.
We
call
how
to
build
a
better
home,
the
story
of
the
construction
of
a
passive
house.
We
hope
you'll
find
some
useful
tips
about
making
your
home
greener
and
more
cost
efficient,
whether
you're
building
a
new
home
or
simply
upgrading
your
present
one.

A
Hi
I'm
helen
reinike
wilt
and
I
work
for
arlington's
initiative
to
rethink
energy
or
air
as
part
of
the
air
program.
I
manage
the
green
home
choice
program.
Green
home
choice
is
a
free,
sustainable
home
certification
program
for
arlington
residents
that
provides
them
with
advice
on
making
new
homes
and
renovation
projects
as
sustainable
as
possible.
We.
B
A
To
date,
about
200
homes
have
been
certified
within
the
green
home
choice
program
and
the
home
we're
going
to
be
focusing
on
is
just
one
of
them.
Here's
how
the
program
works.
I
meet
with
builders,
architects
and
homeowners
from
the
early
design
phase
until
the
project
is
completed,
to
provide
them
with
guidance.
This
will
help
make
homes,
energy
and
water
efficient,
while
also
reducing
the
use
of
natural
resources
minimizing
the
amount
of
waste
for
our
landfills
and
making
the
homes
more
durable.
It
also
creates
healthier
indoor
air
quality
for
the
home's
residents.
A
In
a
nutshell,
homes
in
this
program
will
be
more
comfortable
and
consume
less
energy
and
water
than
other
homes.
They
will
have
a
healthier
indoor
environment
than
homes
that
have
not
focused
so
much
on
these
issues
when
you're,
building
a
home
or
doing
a
major
renovation
or
addition
to
your
home,
you
really
have
one
shot
to
get
certain
things
right
like
how
you
construct
the
building
envelope.
A
That
means
the
walls
and
the
roof,
and
if
you
pay
a
little
more
attention
up
front
and
planning
it,
you
will
reap
the
rewards
for
the
life
of
the
home.
This
wonderful
home
participated
in
both
the
green
home
choice
and
the
passivhaus
certification
program
and
is
expect
to
receive
certificates
in
both
both
green
home
choice
and
passive
house
focus
primarily
on
energy
efficiency.
However,
green
home
choice
pays
more
attention
to
stormwater
and
site
preservation,
water
efficiency.
A
D
It
didn't
make
sense
to
me
to
build
a
house
and
use
old
technology
when
we
know
how
to
build
much
better
houses.
Now
we
wanted
a
comfortable
home,
so
we
we've
had
homes
that
were
very
drafty
and
uncomfortable
and
had
a
high
heating
bills
and
cooling
bills,
and
so
I'd
say
it
was
comfort
that
first
drove
us.
But
we've
been
you
know,
thinking
about
the
environment
and
just
wanted
to
build
a
home
that
would
be
responsible
to
the
planet
and
but
also
something
that
would
be
comfortable
and
have
value
over
the
long
term.
A
We're
very
happy
to
see
these
techniques
being
used
in
arlington
and
fully
encourage
others
to
consider
participating
in
these
programs
and
others
like
them
to
make
their
homes
more
sustainable.
