A
Arlington
county
maintains
over
525
miles
of
water
mains
as
part
of
arlington's
assessment
management
program.
Water
distribution
mains
are
regularly
evaluated
for
rehabilitation
or
replacement.
But
what
do
you
do
when
the
pipe
is
under
a
river?
That's
when
arlington's
water
team
applies
their
innovative
minds
to
take
a
look
inside.
B
We're
doing
an
inspection
on
a
48
inch
pipe
which
drinking
water,
which
is
the
largest
pipe
we
have
in
arlington
county.
This
pipe
is
one
of
the
most
important
pipes,
so
we
just
want
to
get
a
good
idea
of
what
the
condition
is.
We
brought
a
robot,
it's
a
company
called
pure
technology.
It's
a
robot!
That's
about
nine
feet!
Long!
It's
going
to
go
in
here
at
this
insertion
point
and
then
it's
going
to
travel
about
7000
feet
under
the
potomac
river
and
come
out
on
the
other
side
of.
A
Before
the
robot
goes
into
the
pipe
the
crew
thoroughly
disinfect
it,
the
robot
has
a
flexible
design
to
ensure
that
the
pipe
diver
tool
can
safely
navigate
valves
and
bends
in
the
pipe
while
traveling
long
distances.
Once
the
robot
is
inserted
into
the
pipe.
It
will
take
about
two
hours
to
travel,
seven
thousand
feet
as
the
robot
travels
down.
The
pipe
data
is
recorded
on
board
downloaded
and
interpreted
by
an
experienced
data
analyst
to
pinpoint
possible
locations
of
the
pipe
that
may
need
repair.
