Description
Ramzi Awwad, the County’s Engineering
Bureau Chief. led a team responsible for the civil
engineering design and the construction oversight of the Old Dominion Drive project. He gives us an insight into the project's challenges, benefits, and community involvement.
A
Old
Dominion
Drive
was
one
of
the
last
arterial
streets
in
Arlington
County
that
didn't
have
sidewalk
on
either
side
of
the
street.
This
project
installed
sidewalk
on
both
sides
of
the
street,
from
north
Glee
Road
towards
the
county
line
and
now
area
residents
can
enjoy
these
nice
wide
safe
sidewalks.
Not
only
did
we
install
sidewalks,
but
we
also
added
marked
crosswalks
at
several
intersections.
We
upgraded
the
bus
stops
to
make
them
more
accessible,
especially
to
those
with
disabilities,
ready
turn
lanes
at
the
intersection
of
Williamsburg
Boulevard
to
improve
vehicular
efficiency.
A
We
updated
the
signals
with
new
technology.
We
added
streetlights,
improve
the
storm
drainage
system
and
we
upgraded
an
aging
water.
Main
construction
was
very
challenging
on
this
project
because
of
the
type
work
environment
and
we
were
trying
to
minimize
disruption
to
the
traveling
public.
We
finished
construction
ahead
of
schedule.
The
whole
project
wouldn't
have
been
possible
without
the
support
of
the
community
and
here,
to
tell
us
more
about
that
process.
Is
capital
projects
manager,
Betty,
Diggs
Betty?
What
was
the
community
process
like?
Oh
it.
