Description
Jessica Baxter finds out why Arlington County is inspecting our neighborhood bridges.
A
B
Every
two
years,
the
county
conduct
routine
bridge
inspections.
First
and
foremost,
these
are
for
safety
purposes
to
make
sure
that
all
of
our
structures
are
saved.
Also,
they
help
us
identify
any
needed
minor
repairs
so
that
we
can
perform
them
before
they
become
major
problems
and
they
help
us
identify
routine
maintenance
that
we
can
conduct
to
extend
the
life
of
our
bridges.
Excellent.
B
They
are
based
on
previous
inspections
and
what
I've
been
seeing
so
far.
Our
bridges
are
generally
in
good
shape,
because
that's
the
case,
we
can
focus
on
performing
minor
repairs
before
they
become
major
problems,
as
Bridge
condition
deteriorates
further
and
further
the
cost
to
make
the
repairs
increases
exponentially.
So
we
want
to
make
sure
that
we
get
ahead
of
everything
while
we
still
can
and
routine
preventive
maintenance
is
very
important
in
extending
the
life.
B
For
example,
cleaning
a
bridge
is
important
because
dirt
traps
moisture,
which
can
deteriorate
the
concrete
ceiling,
the
decks,
also
protects
them
from
the
elements
and
painting
steel
components
helps
prevent
rusting
with
these
types
of
proactive
steps.
We
can
extend
the
life
of
our
bridges
and
our
infrastructure
can
last
safely
for
50
years
or
more.
Thank.
