An examination of the difficult intersection of Rt. 50 and Courthouse Road and how stimulus funds may be used to improve it.

The intersection of Route, 50 and courthouse road is one of the most dangerous in Arlington County. First, getting onto Route 50 west from courthouse road is risky. Business and traffic here often backs up drivers on courthouse road must wait to merge onto 50 West and accelerate quickly into oncoming fast moving traffic, since there is no acceleration lien on this major thoroughfare.

Another dangerous part of the intersection is courthouse. Road and route. 50 east drivers coming from 50 east must make a left-hand exit slow down quickly and turn left onto the ramp for courthouse road, often through a line of cars trying to merge onto 50 east.

Those cards that want to merge onto 50 east must quickly accelerate, as there is no merge lane onto the highway.

Making this area even more difficult drivers who have exited from route 50 eastbound on the courthouse road must cut across one lane and merge with oncoming traffic.

As traffic backs up, this becomes more and more dangerous at the same point lies the most confusing part for drivers on courthouse road heading towards route 15 to get onto Route 50 east, which is to the drivers left. You must bear right to get onto Route, 50 West, which is to the drivers right. You must bear left due to recent cuts to the state transportation budget. Funding for this important project was reduced.

Restoring these funding cuts using federal stimulus dollars will not only provide immediate investment in our local economy, but will provide a long-term benefit to increase the safety and reduce congestion at one of the most dangerous intersections in the county.
