From YouTube: Arlington Promotes Environmental Outreach
Description
"Arlington Promotes Environmental Outreach," a short film by The International City/County Management Association (ICMA), highlights Arlington County Government's environmental commitments to the business and residential community.
A
Your
initiative
was
put
in
place
in
2007
by
our
county
board
and
it's
a
commitment
for
government
to
reduce
our
carbon
footprint
by
ten
percent
from
our
2000
levels.
Central
Library
is
a
great
example
of
our
commitment
to
the
air
initiative.
It's
our
busiest
library
and
through
a
series
of
electrical
electrical
upgrades
in
system
control
upgrades
we've
been
able
to
reduce
the
yearly
consumption
of
electricity
at
this
facility
by
more
than
900,000
kilowatt
hours.
A
We
have
a
another
system
of
putting
in
right
now,
that's
going
to
be
moving
to
LED
lights,
which
will
use
less
energy
cost
us
less
money
to
operate
and
also
provide
really
pleasing
natural
light.
If
you
look
around
our
facility,
it's
designed
with
a
lot
of
natural
light
to
begin
with,
and
we're
really
looking
to
make
sure
that
we
don't
take
away
from
that.
A
We
have
a
very
aggressive
outreach
effort
and
training
effort
with
our
business
community,
realizing
that
they
have
a
unique
set
of
goals,
but
they
also
have
a
unique
set
of
needs
and
responsibilities
to
the
community
as
well.
So
we
recognize
our
business
partners
and
we're
very
active
in
working
with
the
business
community
tried
to
build
additional
partnerships.

We
believe
that
environmental
sustainability
in
general
and
energy
efficiency
specifically
isn't
just
the
right
thing
to
do.
It's
good
business.
We
actually
have
12
Energy
Star
buildings
here
in
Arlington
County,
which
is
actually
more
than
a
third
of
all
the
energy
star
buildings
in
arlington
county
that
are
under
our
umbrella,
and
then
we
also
are
putting
additional
sustainability
practices
in
place
at
all
of
our
properties.
One
of
the
great
example
of
how
we
partnered
with
the
county
to
achieve
sustainability
goals.
It's
here
on
courthouse
Plaza.
B
The
county
has
received
LEED
certification
for
their
interiors
in
this
building.
We
did
a
major
retrofit
to
improve
the
energy
and
environmental
sustainability
performance
of
this
building.
So
one
thing
we
did
was
we
install
the
green
roof?
We
also
added
water
saving,
plumbing
fixtures
and
we
upgraded
to
energy-efficient
lighting
with
the
sensors
on
those
lights
that
it'll
turn
off
when
no
one
is
using
them.
We've
expanded
recycling
programs
here
at
courthouse,
Plaza
and
we're
actually
projecting
here
in
2009
we're
going
to
recycle
136
tons
of
material,
let's
the
equivalent
of
13
school
buses.
