Description
ATV's regular roundup of news and notes from Around Arlington, in this edition County Manager Mark Schwartz stops by to discuss the Capital Improvement Plan. We also take a walking tour of Four Mile Run Valley and the county pledges it's support for the LGBT community. We get an award for walkability, former students and staff of John H. Langston Elementary School share their memories, and we ask residents to share their ideas on how the county can help its business thrive.

Hill,
the
capital
improvement
plan
or
CIP
includes
major
investments
in
parks,
libraries,
transportation,
community
centers
infrastructure
and
other
areas
and
services
that
support
the
community.
Harris
county
manager
mark
schwartz
to
tell
us
more.
The.
B
Capital
improvement
plan
is
a
document
that
we
prepare
every
two
years.
It
is
something
that
talks
about
the
investments
we
want
to
make
in
our
capital
infrastructure
over
that
ten-year
period.
So
it's
a
full
inventory
of
everything
that
we
have
in
the
county
and
what
it
is
that
we
need
to
do
to
keep
it
stable.
What
we
need
to
do
to
make
sure
it
keeps
working
and
then
anything
want
to
add
to
that.
So
I'll
give
you
some
examples.
B
We
have
a
huge
amount
of
infrastructure
that
people
don't
see
so
its
water,
the
water
pipes,
it's
the
sewer
pipes,
stormwater,
we
have
our
roads,
we
have
our
buildings,
we
have
our
schools
and
our
County
and
government
facilities.
Those
are
all
the
stock
that
make
up
our
capital
inventory.
So
we
take
stock
of
that
every
two
years
with
the
community
with
any
plan
the
longer
you're
planning
horizon
is
less
certain.
You
are,
as
you
get
further
out
so
every
two
years.
B
We
try
to
be
very
specific
and
very
focused
on
what's
happening
in
the
first
two
years,
because
that's
the
case,
where
we're
going
to
actually
go
to
the
voters
in
November
and
ask
them
to
approve
bonds,
that
that
will
be
money
that
we
will
actually
spend
and
rely
on
those
numbers
to
go
ahead
and
build
specific
projects.
But
as
far
as
new
things
we're
doing,
we
have
an
investment
plan
for
the
lubber
run.
Community
center
we've
had
a
conversation
for
several
years
and
now
we're
ready
to
move
ahead
with
a
new
community
center.
B
There
we're
continuing
as
part
of
this
CIP.
We
don't
ask
for
any
more
money,
not
a
single
penny,
more
for
completion
of
the
long
bridge
park
project,
which
includes
not
just
the
aquatics
and
exercise
fitness
facility,
but
the
a
10
and
a
half
acre
park
there.
We
also
have
some
considerable
investments
in
transportation,
expansion
of
our
bus
fleet
and
facilities
that
we
need
in
order
to
maintain
our
buses
and
then
also
there's
conversations
that
we're
having
right
now
with
the
community
about
where
it
might
be
the
best
place
to
locate
the
fire
station
right.
B
That
right
now
is
up
at
lee,
highway
and
Culpepper,
and-
and
so
we
have
some
planning
money
set
aside
for
that
when
more
money
a
couple
years
down
the
line
for
rebuilding
our
fire
stations.
We've
talking
about
replacing
the
fire
station
in
Rosslyn
that'll
be
a
developer
financed
project.
So
there's
a
lot
a
lot
of
things
going
on
and
again
and
I
don't
want
to
leave
the
side
because
it
is
actually
the
most
in
some
ways,
the
most
visible
thing.
B
We
have
a
very
strong
commitment
on
our
part
to
work
with
the
schools
so
we'll
adopt
whatever
they
send
to
us,
and
we
also
have
some
investments
we've
set
aside
on
our
site
and
that's
something
that
the
county
and
schools
are
going
to
share
the
cost
of.
So
that's
a
new
way
of
our
doing
things
joining
with
the
schools
on
a
joint
partnership
for
that
we'd.
