Over 50 years ago community leaders had a vision to redevelop Arlington, VA. At the time they didn't know that they were starting a trend that would later be known as 'Smart Growth' - where mixed-use development around public transit hubs, creates an environment where people want to live and work.
Sustainability is inherently part of a Smart Growth plan, and today's leaders want to make Arlington even more energy efficient. This is the story of how today's Arlington visionaries want to create a community energy plan that'll reach into the next 50 years.

The Neighborhood Conservation Program has been helping to improve and enhance Arlington neighborhoods for 50 years. When the program was created in 1964, the goal was to empower residents by having them come together to discuss and share ideas for improving their neighborhoods. Today, the program provides funding for a variety of improvements including: installation of sidewalks, curbs and gutters, streetlights, signs, park improvements, neighborhood art and beautification. This program empowers citizens to identify and plan projects in their own neighborhoods.
Communities participating in the Neighborhood Conservation program benefit from being involved in the process for improving their own neighborhoods and help get funds for important projects. It’s also a great way for neighborhoods to directly engage with Arlington County.
When a neighborhood participates in the Neighborhood Conservation program, it becomes part of a larger community known as the Neighborhood Conservation Advisory Committee (NCAC). The County Board relies on the NCAC to report on the issues of greatest concern to our community members. Neighborhood Conservation representatives serve on the NCAC and help to develop recommendations for improving the neighborhood conservation process and participate in implementing County bond funds.

"Digitizing opens up a whole world to be able to share these things, but nothing can replace holding that Civil War letter" says Judy Knudsen when describing how Arlington Public Library's Center for Local History is changing, yet remaining the same. Formerly known as the Virginia Room, the new name better describes the scope of work that Judy and her team of archivists do, which includes seeking out and preserving local historical stories.
In this piece, we learn about the amazing story of civil rights activist and former Freedom Rider Joan Mulholland. We follow her as she donates part of her private collection of historical documents that depict her role during the 1960's Civil Rights movement.

Ashlawn Elementary School teacher Cynthia Power was looking for a way to volunteer in her community while spending time with her beloved dog Humphrey. What she found has become one of the most popular reading events in the Arlington County Library system: Paws to Read, the program where kids read to dogs.
The program is designed to help kids with their reading skills and their vocalization skills by spending time reading in a completely non-judgemental, non-corrective environment.
"Paws to Read is an amazing program." Cynthia explains, "Children reading aloud in a non-judgmental atmosphere builds their confidence and reading skills. Always having someone correct mispronunciations, lack of inflection, or skipped words, does not really inspire confidence. Parents and teachers often find it difficult to provide non-judgmental reading time for children. Dogs do it perfectly!"
All of the dogs are certified by People Animals Love (PAL) as Therapy Dogs and they are trained to be gentle around children. To learn more about PAL's work: http://www.peopleanimalslove.org/
For her efforts, Cynthia and Humphrey have been honored with an Outstanding Volunteer Award by the Arlington County Board. You can read more about Cynthia and Humphrey's work here: http://library.arlingtonva.us/2013/05/23/congratulations-to-humphrey/

For three days in June, the SuperNOVA performance art festival enlivened the streets of Rosslyn, bringing more than 75 emerging and established local, national, and international artists to energize public spaces and engages audiences in unexpected ways. As Arlington TV covered the festival, we wondered what benefits hosting such a festival could bring into our community, beyond the groundbreaking creativity on view. So we spoke with festival producer Philippa Hughes, Cecilia Cassidy, Executive Director of Rosslyn BID and Karen Vasquez, Director of Cultural Affairs at Arlington Economic Development about the ramifications of the festival, both cultural and economic.

Today 1 in 3 children in America is considered obese. That's why it's important for us to find fun and innovative ways to kids to move more. The Arlington County Parks & Recreation Department is finding lots of ways to help kids age into activity. Arlington TV's Katie Sweeney drops in at Walter Reed Community Center to see what they're doing to help kids get fit. There, Jamal Jones, Director of After School Programs at Walter Reed, lets us join a class helping kids train for the upcoming Turtle Trot 5K. Katie makes a few friends with the kids, and later they get a visit from the Chairman of the Arlington County Board, J. Walter Tejada. Mr Tejada, an avid sportsman himself, has long made Fit Arlington one of his core policy objectives on the Board.
Of course the Turtle Trot training was just one of the many many programs that Parks and Rec has for Arlington's kids. To find out more and register for classes, go to www.arlingtonva.us/parks and click on "Kids."

There are great stories waiting in even the tiniest corner of Arlington. And we had this point proved for us again, when the members of Calloway United Methodist Church approached the county with a request to designate their churchyard cemetery a local historic district. The history of Calloway Cemetery stretches back to the 19th century, and opens a small but important window on the history of African Americans in Arlington.

The DC region's favorite wandering Arts festival has come back to Crystal City -- and it's bigger and better than ever! With over 1,300 artists, 5,000 pieces of art, and over 300 live performances all taking place in 380,000 square feet of former DoD office space, Artomatic 2012 is one of the biggest happenings of the Summer. And Crystal City BID did a fantastic job helping bring the event back to Crystal City for the first time since 2007. There's so much to see and only five weeks to get it all in!
