of
the
real
jewels
of
Arlington
is
obviously
our
fantastic
public
school
system.
The
new
year
is
well
underway,
and
one
of
the
things
that's
new
about
it
is
the
man
at
the
top.
For
this
month's
know,
you're
a
very
own
schools,
correspondent
Maya
near,
takes
us
to
meet
the
new
superintendent
of
schools,
dr.
Pat
Murphy.

great
question
superintendent
does
a
lot
of
different
things
here
in
Arlington
public
schools.
You
know
we
work
directly
with
the
schools
and
teachers
and
principals,
but
really
our
main
job
is
caring
about
what
happens
in
your
classroom.
I
like
to
see
what
you're
doing
in
your
classroom
and
how
successful
your
being
that's.
What
I
really
enjoy
interacting
with
students
is
probably
that
the
high
point
of
my
day
and
I
try
and
make
that
a
regular
part
of
every
day.

They
continue
to
be
challenges
that
the
school
division
has
faced.
Eliminating
the
achievement
gap,
making
sure
that
all
students
are
successful
is
one
of
the
things
that
I
have
on
the
top
of
my
priority
list.
The
other
challenge
that
we're
going
to
face
this
year,
which
is
a
little
bit
different,
is
there
are
going
to
be
some
budget
challenges.
So
there
could
be
some
tough
decisions
coming
down
the
road,
but
we're
really
putting
things
in
place
to
you
know,
make
those
decisions
and
set
some
priorities.

joined
on
to
public
school
in
July
and
one
of
the
things
that
I
was
really
missing
when
I
came
on
board
in
the
summer.
I
said:
where
are
the
students
you
know?
I've
got
to
talk
to
some
students,
I
need
to
use
them
as
a
sounding
board
or
get
some
advice
from
them,
and
one
of
the
things
that
I've
done
when
I
was
a
principal
and
also
in
the
central
office
is
I,
have
consulted
with
students
and
I
think
their
opinions
and
their
help
that
they
can
provide
me.

There's
a
variety
of
things
that
make
a
great
school
I
think
the
students
are
first
I
think
also
the
staff,
the
principal
the
teachers,
the
support
staff.
They
play
also
a
critical
role,
but
I
think
you
need
to
look
at
the
parents
and
their
involvement
and
their
participation
and
the
fact
that
they
can
come
and
go
and
be
involved.

Then
I
think
we
need
to
look
out
into
the
broader
community
and
the
fact
is
that
it's
just
not
the
school,
it's
how
the
broader
community
in
fact
supports
the
school
and
how
they're
part
of
the
school
success
and
I
think
all
those
pieces
are
really
important
to
make
up
a
composite
of
what
a
successful
school
is.

another
very
good
question
that
you
had
today,
you
know
I,
think
I
go
into
every
opportunity
and
I
would
like
our
students
to
go
into
every
opportunity
in
the
same
way
and
say
hey:
how
can
I
get
better?
How
can
I
improve
I
also
think
it's
important
that
we
challenged
students
every
day
in
the
classroom
and
that
they
stretch
themselves.
Sometimes
that's
a
little
uncomfortable
but
I
think
we'd
be
surprised
by
the
successes
we
can
have
and
the
achievements
we
can
make.
