Description
A conversation with participants in Arlington Virginia's 2011 Leckey Forum, the topic of which was Why Affordable Housing is Good for Students and Schools.
A
B
C
Of
times
when
we
talk
about
affordable
housing
in
Arlington,
we
focus
on
dollars
and
bricks
and
for
good
reasons.
Those
are
central
issues,
but
we
want
to
try
to
tell
a
bigger
story
about
affordable
housing
in
Arlington
about
the
positive
impact
it
can
have
on
the
lives
of
its
residents,
and
we
talk
about
children
who
can
go
through,
for
example,
after
school
programs
right
where
they
live,
and
that
was
part
of
what
we
want
to
wanted
to
do
today.
Well,.
D
Everybody
agrees
that
it'd
be
nice,
but
for
teachers
to
live
where
they
teach,
they
can
be
more
active
in
after-school
activities.
You
run
to
the
grocery
stores
and
it
also
makes
it
more
stable
for
the
teachers,
so
they
stay
here
longer
when
they
can't
afford
to
stay
here.
They
move
out
that's
bad
for
student
continuity,
but
it's
also
expensive
for
the
school
board
to
have
to
recruit
and
train
new.
B
Teachers,
people
move
two
places
because
the
schools
are
very
good.
People
go
go
away
from
places
because
they
don't
like
the
schools
anymore,
so,
for
example,
who
or
challenged
communities
could
lose
some
of
their
population
because
their
school
system
suddenly
becomes
less
desirable
and
or
vice
versa.
B
E
All
the
things
we've
done
to
try
and
make
Arlington
a
better
place
to
live
result
in
it
being
more
desirable
and
contribute
to
this
issue.
Now
we're
not
going
to
stop
trying
to
make
Arlington
a
good
place
to
live,
so
we
need
to
do
is
take
advantage
of
some
of
the
increased
value
and
put
that
into
ensuring
affordability
for
people
at
a
range
of
income,
so
that
low
and
moderate
income
people
can
continue
to
be
part
of
this
community.
E
B
If
we
have
a
diverse
community,
which
is
not
only
culturally
socially
ethnically
but
also
economically
diverse,
then
we
are
will
be
more
resilient
with
all
challenges
or
against
all
challenges
that
lay
ahead
and
we
face
many.
We
are
under
constant
competition.
Welcome
we're
competing
with
perfect
candy
will
compete
with
Alexander
will
complete
with
downtown
to
see
we're
completing
with
Montgomery
County
or
copying
for
jobs
per
for
the
best
education,
for
example,
we're
competing
for
the
best
being
the
best
place
to
live
so
for
that
maintaining
diversity
is
actually
an
answer
to
other
than
and
drug.
B
E
Know
it's
a
it's
a
tall
order,
it's
a
difficult
job,
but
we
know
about
doing
difficult
jobs
in
Arlington.
So
it's
not
the
first
time
we've
taken
on
something
that's
challenging
and
I.
Think
that
you
know
we
will
find
the
tools
we
need.
We
have
a
lot
of
them
in
place.
Now.
We've
made
progress.
We
have
6,000
units
have
committed,
affordable
housing
today
about
fourteen
fifteen
percent
of
the
housing
stock.
I
think
that's
going
to
have
to
grow,
but
I
do
think
it's
within
our
means.
We
know
the
things
that
need
to
be
done.
E
We're
going
to
be
developing
new
tools,
we're
looking
ahead,
we're
getting
ahead
of
the
problem.
That's
why
the
best
thing
that
we
can
say
is
that
we're
recognizing
the
problem
that
will
be
there
not
just
today,
but
well
into
the
future
and
we're
putting
tools
in
place
so
that
we
can
deal
with
it.
So,
yes,
I
am
optimistic
that
we're
going
to
succeed
in
meeting
this
challenge.
Oh.
C
Thank
you
for
asking
our
new
and
improved
website
the
Alliance
for
housing.
Solutions
totally
spelled
out
all
one
word
smashed
together,
org
we're
trying
to
really
post
a
lot
of
this
information
in
real
time,
and
we
provide
links
to
really
good
information
from
the
county
and
other
groups
that
are
important
that
are
involved
with
affordable
housing.
That's.
