Description
NewsMakers; Looking at the progression of construction and the programs offered in the new Westover Library/Reed School in Arlington County
A
B
It's
going
really
well.
The
schools
are
going
to
gain
occupancy
in
the
middle
of
this
month,
there's
kind
of
a
rolling
occupancy,
so
the
libraries
should
be
able
to
get
into
the
building
in
early
September
and
begin
our
move
from
the
existing
facility
into
this
facility
and
then
look
for
an
opening,
probably
soft-launched,
mid-october,
with
a
party
for
the
community
in
late
October.
That's
what
we're
looking
at
right
now
for
the
library
staff.
B
It's
really
exciting,
because
there
will
be
three
different
programs
in
the
schools
with
whom
we
can
partner
on
education
and
outreach
in
literacy
in
reading
programs
and
instilling
in
the
members
of
those
school
communities
the
joy
of
reading
and
kind
of
lifelong
learning.
So
for
us,
it's
a
real
opportunity
and
we're
looking
forward
to
when
we're
all
in
the
buildings
and
ready
to
go
having
more
sessions
to
talk
about
what
that
joint
programming
mark
might
look
like
the
building
level.
B
Planning
Commission
was
absolutely
integral
to
the
success
of
what
you're
seeing
today,
because
the
neighborhood
had
waited
since
1998
for
a
library
and
had
an
enormous
amount
of
influence
over
the
design
concepts.
The
principles
they
were
very
excited
that
we
were
interested
as
well
in
retaining
the
original
school
because
of
the
nature
of
the
original
school
structure,
there's
kind
of
a
mix
of
classic
architecture
and
classic
stylings
in
terms
of
some
of
the
outfitting
Zand
furniture,
as
well
as
these
kind
of
modern
and
again
I.
B
Think
that
really
fits
because
it
it's
the
old
that
leads
to
the
new
it's
the
new
that
is
built
upon
the
traditions
of
the
past.
Well,
I
think,
if
nothing
else,
it
provides
a
community
focus
in
a
community
space.
We
have
the
plaza
out
here
for
farmers,
markets
and
festivals
and
music
events.
They
don't
have
something
like
that
now,
so
it's
a
it's
a
destination
rather
than
a
library
up
the
hill.
It
becomes
an
integral
part
of
community
and
community
life,
so
it
becomes
a
real
magnet
for
all
kinds
of
activity.
B
There's
a
community
facility
in
the
building
we'll
have
tons
of
new
computers,
so
again,
I
think
I,
think
featuring
the
library
as
a
destination.
Just
as
it's
worked
so
well
in
shirlington
is
going
to
happen
here.
It's
probably
going
to
double
our
readership
and
visitors
within
the
first
few
months.
B
For
me,
it's
sort
of
special
because
I
grew
up
in
the
community
and
I.
Remember
when
the
library
was
over
there
on
Longfellow
street
in
an
apartment,
building
and
I
got
my
library
card
and
then
the
building
up
the
street
at
Lexington
and
mckinley
was
the
new
building
where
I
spent
my
formative
years
and
now
I'm
back
in
arlington,
and
I
have
the
thrill
of
opening
yet
another
westover
branch
and
it's
it's
pretty
exciting
and
the
staff
is
really
excited
as
well.
