From YouTube: Alex's Story
Description
Working in the school Library meant Alex could support herself while at graduate school pursuing her passion for sculpture. Her plan was to graduate and teach art while working in the studio creating her own art. In 'Alex's Story' we witness how life events mean sometimes our plans have to change, and with change unexpected passions emerge.
A
The
coffee
filters
are
funny
part
of
why
I've
been
working
with
them
for
so
long
is
because
I
still
haven't
really
figured
out
what
they're
trying
to
say.
A
I
I
had
no
intention
whatsoever
working
in
libraries.
I
got
married
and
started
grad
school.
I
went
to
pratt
institute
in
brooklyn
and
about
halfway
through
I,
my
marriage
just
fell
apart.
I
had
already
been
working
in
the
school
library
as
a
graduate
assistant
and
a
job
opened
up
full-time
in
the
school
and
one
of
the
people.
I
worked
with
recommended
that
I
apply
for
it.
I
don't
think
I
would
have
done
so
if
I
wasn't
in
the
middle
of
getting
divorced,
but
I
knew
that
I
really
needed
to
be
able
to
support
myself.
A
A
And
at
which
point
we
realized,
we
really
needed
to
move
into
a
bigger
apartment,
because
we
were
living
in
a
very
small
one
bedroom
and
we
started
looking
for
apartments
in
brooklyn
a
little
further
out
and
we've
been
in
our
then
current
apartment.
So
long
we
couldn't
afford
anything
in
the
neighborhood
at
all
anymore,
at
which
point
my
husband
decided
to
go
to
law
school.
A
A
I
was
working
in
the
library
five
days
a
week
monday
through
friday,
regular
hours
and
then
I
was
teaching
saturday
mornings
and
I
taught
an
introduction
to
drawing
a
painting
and
I
loved
it
and
I
felt
like
I
was
really
finally
getting
to
do
what
I
wanted
to
do,
which
was
teach
art
and
make
art
all
the
time.
It
was
very
exciting
and
I
thought
that
I
would
be
able
to
continue
doing
that.
A
I
thought
I
was
done
with
libraries.
I
couldn't
turn
it
down
and
I
rapidly
discovered
that
I
loved
it
that
working
in
the
public
library
was
nothing
like
working
in
an
academic
library
and
mostly
what
I
loved
was
the
internet,
the
human
interaction
talking
to
people
finding
out
what
they
like
to
read,
sharing
suggestions
as
long
as
you're
online.
It
will
actually
allow
you
to
download
it
immediately.
A
A
A
There's
a
very
cliche
circle
of
life
aspect
to
my
work:
it's
about
birth
and
death
and
and
the
cycle
of
growing
and
aging
and
dying,
and
then
decomposing.
They
look
like
they
could
be
so
many
different
things.
They
look
like
fungus,
they
look
like
leaves,
but
I'm
still
working
on
what
formation
they
take
in
order
to
talk
about
in
order
to
communicate
what
that
transformation
is
about,
and
eventually,
hopefully
I'll
get
there.
A
A
A
What
do
you
think
of
twitter-
and
I
said
I
haven't
seen
any
really
useful
uses
for
it,
yet
he
told
me
to
look
at
what
the
smithsonian
was
doing
with
twitter
and
they
were
using
twitter
as
a
way
to
put
out
information
about
what
they
were
doing
and
to
talk
to
people,
and
I
hadn't
seen
any
institutions
until
the
smithsonian
used
twitter.
In
that
way,
the
funny
thing
about
something
like
twitter
is
that
it
is
what
the
users
make
of
it
and
it
evolves
as
the
users
use
it
differently.
A
So
at
this
point
it
was
in
a
really
big
stage
of
evolving
to
being
much
more
useful
to
places
like
us,
so
I
set
us
up
with
twitter
and
I
set
us
up
with
facebook
and
since
then,
it's
evolved,
so
that
mostly
we
talk
about
our
own
stuff
and
we
talk
to
our
library
users
about
stuff
they're
concerned
about,
but
again
it
keeps
evolving.
So
who
knows
what
we'll
be
doing
with
it?
Next,
the
library
is
as
useful
and
necessary.
Today,
as
it
was
100
years
ago.
A
We
are
incredibly
sophisticated
when
it
comes
to
technology.
We
have
enormous
resources
online.
We
have
enormous
understanding
of
how
you
use
online
resources.
You
know
we
can
out
google
google
and
we
should
part
of
what
librarians
do
is.
We
can
show
you
what's
an
authoritative
source
and
what's
not
in
the
process
of
creating
all
these
social
media
outlets
for
the
library,
I
became
really
aware
of
the
need
for
library
advocacy.
I
think
that
effective
library
advocacy
in
in
this
day
and
age
has
to
include
a
very
large
online
component.
A
A
A
A
I
figure
I'll
still
be
making
new
sculptures
when
I'm
85.,
so
if,
if,
if
the
art,
waxes
and
wanes
based
on
whatever
else
is
going
on,
that's
okay,
part
of
why
I
like
having
the
library
work
is
it
allows
me
to
to
continue
to
communicate,
really
important
things,
but
in
a
completely
different
venue
and
and
I've
become
really
passionate
about
about
libraries
and
about
helping
people
in
libraries
and
about
doing
reference
and
communicating
with
people
who
need
help.
