From YouTube: War Against War: Fight for Peace 1914 -1918
Description
A brief clip from Michael Kazin's talk about his book, War Against War: The American Fight for Peace 1914-18. The book unfolds the untold story that came close to keeping the United States out of the First World War, and the Americans who tried to stop their nation from fighting one of history's most destructive wars. Recorded at the Arlington Central Library in January 2018.
B
United
States
became,
as
was
all
to
the
war,
the
most
prosperous
nation
in
the
world.
In
fact,
the
capital
of
the
Twain
of
the
20th
century,
but
Wilson's
great
hopes
that
there
would
be
a
peace
without
victory,
that
there
would
be
a
very
effective
World
Federation
of
Nations,
the
League
of
Nations
there
to
be
self-determination
for
nations
within
empires.
B
That's
the
harmonious,
peaceful
democratic
world
that
the
peace
movement
wanted
to
would
come
to
pass.
Well.
We
know
that
didn't
happen.
What
happened,
of
course,
20
years
later,
was
a
much
worse.
Much
greater
war
will
were
one
kill
about
seventeen
million
people,
world
war,
two
killed,
50
million
people,
Wilson
went
to
Paris
1919
as
a
great
hero,
because
it
was
great
idea,
let's
take
purposes
that
he
spoke
for,
but
the
peace
treaty
he
signed
in
Paris
was
not
ratified
by
the
Senate.
B
The
historian
john
Coogan
puts
it
this
way.
It
was
the
genius
of
Woodrow
Wilson,
which
recognized
that
a
lasting
peace
must
be
a
peace
for
that
victory.
It
was
a
tragedy
of
Woodrow
Wilson
than
his
own
on
neutrality
would
be
a
major
factor
in
bringing
about
the
decisive
Allied
victory
that
made
a
healing
piece
impossible.
