From YouTube: Introducing Arlington Veterans Bridge
Description
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) recently completed its reconstruction of the Washington Boulevard bridge over Route 110 in Arlington – near Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon. On the recommendation from Arlington County’s Military and Veterans Affairs Committee (MVAC), the Commonwealth Transportation Board approved Arlington County’s request to designate the bridge as “Arlington Veterans Bridge” in honor of Arlington veterans from all branches of the Armed Forces.
A
A
So
the
county
manager
really
relies
heavily
on
the
impact
to
provide
him
advice
so
that
he
can
provide
that
advice
to
both
the
county
board
and
also
to
the
Commonwealth
of
Virginia.
So
he
solicited
our
advice
because
of
where
the
bridge
is
located
between
the
Pentagon
in
Arlington
National
Cemetery.
So
the
committee
deliberated
several
names
and
in
the
final
decided
that
we
want
to
honor
all
the
veterans
of
Arlington
County
and
that's
why
we
determined
the
name.
We
voted
on
it
as
a
committee
approved
it
and
it
was
finally
approved
by
the
Commonwealth
of
Virginia.
B
Well,
the
substructure
includes
granite,
which
is
not
a
very
common
material
that
we
use
in
our
bridges.
These
days
we
were
able
to
retain
three
of
the
original
sub
structures
and
then
add
widening
to
the
bridge
had
granite
cladding
to
them
as
well.
So
three
of
the
original
piers
from
1940
still
remain.
We
gave
it
a
new
bridge
deck.
The
bridge
is
wider
than
it
was
before.
We
have
this
wide
shared
use
path
and
the
sidewalk
on
the
other
side
that
really
enhanced
the
pedestrian,
the
mobility
for
pedestrians
and
bicyclists.
B
A
A
place
where
daily
resident
farms
and
county
and
thousands
of
individuals,
many
who
are
visitors
to
the
National
Capital
Region
traverse
the
bridge,
it
honors
the
13,000
current
Island
County
veterans
that
thousands
of
former
Arlington
County
residents
and
the
millions
of
veterans
in
our
nation
and
as
a
veteran
it
makes
me
feel
proud
and
knowing
that
our
Commonwealth
and
especially
Arlington
County
care
that
much
about
its
veterans
and
the
nation's
veterans.
It's
a
visual
sign
of
thank
you
for
your
service.
