Description
Dr. Allison Finkelstein discusses her leadership role in various capacities in Arlington County Virginia.
A
I
wanted
to
bring
my
expertise
in
World
War
one
to
the
county,
because
in
the
years
after
World
War
one
especially
in
the
1920s
and
the
1930s
commemorations
really
took
place
at
a
local
level,
there
were
national
commemorations.
There
were
places
like
Arlington,
National
Cemetery,
located
here
in
Arlington,
but
a
lot
of
the
work
was
actually
done
by
communities
and
cities
and
towns
across
the
country.
So
I
saw
this
as
an
opportunity
to
take
part
in
a
grassroots
commemoration,
effort
that
built
on
the
legacy
of
what
Arlington
ian's
did
in
the
1920s
and
the
1930s.
A
So
really
it
gives
me
an
opportunity,
as
somebody
who
studies
World,
War
one
commemoration
to
actually
take
part
in
events
that
I
study
as
a
historian.
There
have
been
a
lot
of
personal
benefits
for
being
part
of
the
task
force.
First,
it
has
been
wonderful
to
work
with
the
different
members
of
the
task
force.
A
They
all
come
from
different
groups
around
the
county,
so
I've
really
been
able
to
learn
about
all
of
the
activity
in
all
of
the
great
people
that
are
living
here
in
Arlington,
but
I've
also
been
able
to
get
a
different
perspective
on
how
to
be
a
historian
in
the
public
sphere.
How
do
you
take
scholarship
and
how
do
you
make
that
accessible
to
the
public
and
how
do
you
apply
it
to
community
and
to
a
local
civic
government
if
you're
interested
in
getting
involved
in
local
government
go
online?
A
Look
at
the
Arlington
County's
website
and
I
pretty
much
guarantee.
You'll
find
some
group
that
is
related
to
your
interest
and
they
will
be
very
happy
to
have
helped
our
neighbors
are
extremely
smart.
They
have
a
lot
of
different
skills.
They
bring
together
so
many
different
interests
and
backgrounds
that
things
were
doing
on
a
local
level
or
very
much
of
a
professional
quality.
And
that
really
impresses
me,
and
it
makes
me
feel
very
humbled
and
really
fortunate
to
work
with
all
of
the
people,
especially
on
the
task
force.
