Description
ATV's bi-weekly roundup of all the news and notes around Arlington. In this edition, we say goodbye to two long-time members of the County Board, and welcome two new ones. We also roll out a new segment on County street maintenance, called appropriately "Street Beat." There's also the annual Secret Santa program, and the kickoff of the Nauck Town Center design process.
A
We've
heard
you
want
more
information
on
street
improvements,
so
we're
introducing
a
new
segment
called
street
beat.
It
takes
an
in-depth
look
at
how
arlington
is
working
hard
to
improve
our
infrastructure,
but
first
everyone
is
invited
to
say
thank
you
and
bid
farewell
to
outgoing
board
members,
Mary
Hines
and
Walter
Tejada.
We
caught
up
with
the
pair
as
well
as
their
longtime
colleague,
Jay
Fassett,
to
reflect
on
their
many
years
of
service.
Walter.

Also
hope
you
caught
the
official
swearing-in
of
our
newest
board
members,
Katie
crystal
and
Christian
door,
see
if
you
missed
it,
you
can
catch
repeat
airings
right
here
on
a
TV
and
on
our
website,
arlington

TV
and
don't
forget
to
check
the
new
arlington
today
calendar
feature
on
our
home
page,
so
you
never
miss
anything
important
again.
If
you're
looking
for
a
charity
opportunity,
this
season
consider
donating
a
gift
card
to
help
foster
kids,
low-income
families
and
others
enjoy
the
holidays.
A
The
Department
of
Human
Services
distributes
the
cards,
so
everything
you
donate
goes
to
those
need
gift
cards
should
not
exceed
25
dollars,
but
you
can
donate
as
many
as
you
want.
You
can
find
out
more
details
on
our
website
with
the
keyword
secret
santa
and
thank
you
for
helping
to
make
the
holidays
a
little
brighter
for
Arlington's
neediest
residents.
Did
you
know
that
Arlington
has
a
business
brain
trust?
Well,
we
do
and
it's
a
very
successful
committee
of
business
and
community
leaders
at
the
end
of
a
year-long
effort.
A
They
came
up
with
a
framework
to
make
Arlington
a
truly
business
friendly
community
to
find
out
about
the
five
strategies
developed
to
enhance
the
business
climate,
see
the
press
release
in
our
newsroom
Arlington
gets
top
marks
as
a
great
place
to
live,
work
and
play,
but
potholes
water,
main
breaks
and
service
outages
are
a
fact
of
life
in
any
community
in
response
to
requests
about
how
the
county
deals.
With
these
issues,
we're
introducing
a
new
segment
called
street,
beat
here's
Larry
Marcus
to
tell
us
today
about
improvements
going
on
Lee
Highway.
E
Hi,
my
name
is
Larry
Marcus
I'm,
with
Arlington
County
Department
of
Environmental
Services
translation
engineering
operations
on
the
bureau
chief,
we're
here
at
lien
Lynn
in
Rosslyn
to
talk
about
pedestrian
safety
bike
safety
at
critical
intersection,
where
we
have
1,700
cyclists
in
the
peak
over
the
summer
crossing
one
leg
of
the
intersection,
the
same
place
where
we
have
600
cars
per
hour
coming
off,
66
wanting
to
go
either
on
key
bridge
or
up
into
Rosslyn.
So
quite
the
challenge,
so
the
obvious
thing
to
do
is
separate
the
best
we
can.
E
These
movements
well
there's
certainly
an
opportunity
to
build
something
which
we're
going
to
begin
the
planning
on.
But
what
can
we
do
now
cheaply?
So
this
is
what
we've
done
and
it's
in
place.
We've
illuminated
a
special
turn
restriction
to
stop
those
vehicles
off
of
66,
allow
the
pedestrians
and
the
cyclists
to
start
early
to
have
their
own
time
about
10
seconds
to
cross
that
leg
early.
Then
there's
the
countdown
time
to
let
them
clear,
then.
E
Finally,
while
the
signal
is
still
green
for
the
vehicles,
there's
a
don't
walk
sign
for
those
peds
bikes
and
then
it
lets
the
cars
clear
from
an
intersection
where
we're
have
won
the
top
5
worst
accident
rates
in
the
county.
It's
now
off
the
top
25
list,
based
on
those
operational
improvements,
that's
supported
with
the
enforcement
from
the
police,
which
is
very,
very
important,
as
well
as
the
education
from
the
police
for
those
violating
at
the
at
this
intersection
and
then
finally,
getting
the
word
out
as
we're
doing
now
and
few
other
venues.
A
First,
you
can
see
our
website
for
a
complete
list
of
holiday.
Closings
and
remember
offices
may
be
closed,
but
the
county

room
will
be
open
as
board
members
