Alliance
I'm
very
excited
to
emcee
for
you
today
we
have
a
full
program
to
share
with
you,
starting
from
when
you
walked
in,
you
saw
the
many
varieties
of
Asian
artifacts
on
the
atrium.

were
brought
to
us
by
employees
of
the
Arlington
County,
as
well
as
family
members,
there's
also
literature
provided
by
the
library.
So
thank
you
very
much
for
the
Department
of
libraries
for
providing
that
to
us.
Also
miss
Kim
O'connell
is
out
there
with
her
book
echoes
of
Little
Saigon,
which
talks
about
vimi's
immigration
to
Arlington.
So
you
we
start

artifacts,
and
then
we
have
a
wide
variety

performances

entice
you
with
the
sights
and
sounds

culture

course,
we
have
the
smells
and
taste
of
the
Asian

that
the

is

because
that
was
my
biggest
concern
because
we've
been
really
preparing
for
this
event
for
months
since
February
and
my
team
put

hundred
percent
or
more
than
that
to
make
this
happen.

we
find
that

Asian
heritage,
Alliance
ERG,
which
means
employee
resource
group

welcome

all

dearly

American

Asian
American
Pacific,

just

those
who
are
wondering
we
were
originally

the

the
Asian
and
Pacific
American
Heritage
group.
However,
after
being
formalized
into
an
employee
resource
group
last
year,
or
so,
our
members
wanted
to
call
themselves
the
Asian
heritage,
Alliance
ERG.

That
means
the
AHA
group
so
and
our
goal
is
to
welcome
all
employees,
regardless
of
their
ethnicity
or
origin,
to
become
a
part
of
our
group.
So
it's
not
just
limited
to
Asian
employees
and
we
are
open
to
anybody
who's
interested
in
having
one
with
us
as
we
reach
out
and
highlight
our
culture.
So,
as
you
all
know,
me
is
Asian
American
Pacific
Islander
Heritage
Month,
which
was
legislated
by
Congress
back
in
1992
during
this
month.
Asian
Americans
celebrate
their
heritage
by
showcasing
their
rich,
diverse
culture
and
contributions
to
their
community
and
the
nation.

keeping
with
this
tradition,
the
Asian
heritage,
Alliance
ERG,
have
worked
extremely
hard
since
February
of
this
year
and
putting
together
a
robust
cultural
program
to
share
with
our
co-workers
and
community
members
here
in
Arlington.
I
would
like
to
welcome
you
all,
and
especially
the
County
Board
Chair,
Christian,
Dorsey
and
other
members.

Asian

Pacific.
Heritage,
Month
and
I
do
want
to
make
sure,
even
though
we
know
that
annually
reading
of
a
proclamation
as
part
of
this
event
is
part
of
the
routine
I
want
you
to
recognize,
though,
that
this
is
anything
but
routine.

When
you
consider
our
country's
history,
as
was
mentioned,
Asian
Pacific,
Heritage
Month
has
only
been
a
thing
since
1992
before
that
it
was
Asian
and
Pacific
Heritage
Week,
but
that
wasn't
even
something
that
Congress
was
able
to
get
right
on.
The
first
try
the
very
first
time
that
it
was
proposed,
even
though
joint
resolutions
were
passed
first
in
the
house
and
then
in
the
Senate,
they
couldn't
get
it
together
so
that
it
would
become
public
law
until
several
tries
later.

So
we
have
gone
through
several
iterations
of
trying
to
actually
bring
the
rightful
honoring
of
Asian
and
Pacific
Islanders
to
our
country's
history.
So
I
am
pleased
that
annually
we
do
this
here
in
Arlington
to
express
our
appreciation
for
the
contributions
of
people
of
Asian
and
Pacific
descent
to
our
community
into
our
country.

vital
segment
of
our
community
has
contributed
to
the
prosperity
and
economic
well-being
of
Arlington
County,
whereas
Asian
and
Pacific
Americans
have
brought
with
them
strong
family
values
and
marvelous
traditions
which
strengthen
the
very
fabric
of

society

whereas,
through
their
unquenchable
respect
for
education,
indefatigable
industry
and
persistent
drive
for

the
contributions

Asian

Americans

our
society

general

to
Arlington
County
in
particular.

at
this

I
am
honored
to
introduce
our
keynote
speaker,
Madam
Secretary,
when
did
service.
As
the
deputy
assistant
secretary
in
the
office
of
the
legislative
affairs
for
the
Department
of
Homeland
Security
prior
to
joining
DHHS.
Madam
secretary
was
president
of
wind
strategies,
a
strategic
consulting
company
specializing
in
national
security,
space
and
geospatial
intelligence
issues.
What
a
mouthful
born
in
Saigon,
the
Republic
of
Vietnam
she
immigrated
with
a
family
to
the
United
States
in
1975.
A

As
you
know,
as
the
chairman
had
mentioned
earlier,
in
1978
President
Carter
actually
signed
the
House
Joint
Resolution
1
0:07,
to
proclaim
May
1st
to
the
10th
as
Asian
Pacific,
American,
Heritage
Week
a
full
decade
and
some
change
later
in
1990
President
Bush
41
extended
the
celebration
to
the
entire
month.
We
had
to
wait
another
decade
in
2009,
where
President
Obama
signed
a
presidential
proclamation
recalling
the
challenges
faced
by
the
Asian
Pacific
American
community
and
to
celebrate
their
great
and
significant
contributions
to
society.

It's
now
been
40
years
since
that
original
House
Joint
Resolution
was
signed
into
law
and
in
40
years
a
lot
has
happened.
I
would
venture
to
say
that
I
was
here
in
1978
and
Asian.
Americans
were
probably
kind
of
exotic
back
then,
but
our
County
now
Arlington
County
is
very
diverse,
I'm,
confident
that
many
of
you
have
Asian
American
friends,
neighbors
doctors,
lawyers.
Definitely
your
IT
support.

Actually
we
did
and
other
small
businesses
that
gave
my
family
and
many
like
ours,
a
sense
of
community,
and
we
talked
about
Asian
Americans
contribution
to
America
personally,
I
would
not
be
here,
but
for
my
parents
and
my
father
is
here
because
my
mom
and
dad
had
to
split
duties
today.
My
five-year-old
niece
is
graduating
from
preschool
clearly
much
more
important.
So
my
dad
is
here
representing
my
dad-
is
former
Army,
the
Republic
Vietnam.

He
fought
in
the
Vietnam
War
and
he
made
a
decisive
decision
on
April
20th
1975
that
we
were
going
to
leave
Vietnam.
This
is
10
days
before
the
fall
of
Saigon
and
I
often
complain
to
my
friends
and
anyone
who
will
listen.
The
lack
of
preparation
that
my
parents
undertake
for
anything
like
if
they
have
a
party
they'll,
be
like
hey
we're.
Gonna
party
for
200,
can
you
pick
up
some
food
on
your
way
to
our
house?
F
We
need
sodas,
we
need,
but
for
this
momentous
decision
he
made
it
very
decisive
and
we
left
in
the
middle
of
the
night,
and
so
my
dad
has
been
with
me.
Obviously
my
entire
life,
but
now
he's
heard
me,
give
this
iteration
of
Asian
and
Pacific
American
Heritage
Month
he's
probably
gonna,
be
the
next
one
who
speaks
so
mul
mr.
gong
ding.
Can
you
just
stand

we

recognize
you

To
be
fair,
my
dad
it's
just
not
some
old
retiree.
He
actually
has
his
own
television
show
on
saigon
broadcast
TV
s
BTN.
So
you
can
talk
to
him
later
about
that
anywho
Asian,
Pacific,
American,
Islanders
contributions
go
back
to,
as
you
know,
to
the
19th
century,
when
America
was
stretching
her
pre-industrial
might
to
connect
the
east
and
the
west
coast.
The
first
transcontinental
railroad
was
a
almost
2,000,
continuous
railroad
line,
constructed
between
1863
and
1869,
connecting
the
existing
eastern
u.s.
F
rail
network
at
Omaha,
Nebraska,
County,
Bluffs
Iowa
and
the
Pacific
coast
at
Oakland,
Oakland
Long
Wharf
in
San
Francisco.
The
rail
line
was
built
by
three
private
construction:
private
companies
over
public
lands
provided
by
extensive
u.s.
grants.
The
question
was:
where
would
they
find
the
workers
they
put
an
ad
out?
F
F
Company
essentially
hired
like
21
Chinese
workers
in
Incheon
January,
and
they
essentially
worked
for
30
to
50
percent,
lower
wages
than
the
white
men
on
the
same
jobs
and
they
had
to
pay
for
their
own
food
in
tents.
They
endured
back-breaking,
labor,
tunneling
demolition,
explosives
during
frigid,
winters
and
sweltering
summers.
Hundreds
died
from
explosion,
landslides,
accidents
and
disease,
but
you
know
what
even
when
they
were
only
paid
$26
a
month
working
six
days
a
week.
They
built
that
railroad
working
from
San
Francisco
to
the
Midwest.
F
The
Irish
meanwhile
had
come
out
to
Omaha
and
was
pushing
from
Omaha
out
to
the
west,
so
the
Irish
making
up
the
majority,
the
Union
Pacific
workforce
with
the
Chinese
together.
These
two
immigrant
groups
essentially
built
the
Transcontinental
Railroad
together.
I
find
this
an
interesting
fact
that
I
cited
all
the
time.
My
husband
is
Irish
American,
so
he
always
says
make
sure
you
say
something:
bout,
the
Irish
okay,
so
so
moving
on
from
the
19th
century,
we're
moving
on
to
now
the
20th
century.

We
can't
we
can't
talk
about
the
20th
century
without
talking
about
the
japanese-american,
the
Nisei,
second-generation
contribution
in
the
United
States,
the
442nd
Regimental
Combat
Team,
highly
decorated,
Infantry
Regiment,
comprised
of
japanese-americans
who
fought
heroically
in
world
war
ii
beginning
in
1944.
They
fought
in
italy,
southern
france
and
germany
and
their
motto
was
go
for
broke.
They
fought
for
the
u.s..
They
died
for
the
US,
while
their
families
were
interned
in
internment
camps.

The
unit
earned
more
than
18,000
awards
in
less
than
two
years,
including
nine
thousand
four
hundred
eighty-six
Purple
Hearts
and
four
thousand
Bronze
Star
medals.
The
unit
was
awarded
eight
Presidential
Unit
Citations
and
twenty
one
of
the
members,
the
Medal
of
Honor.
This
unit
also
produced
senator
Dan,
Inouye
and
rep
spark
Matsunaga
out
of
Hawaii,
but
today
asian-americans
are
everywhere
in
every
facet
of
the
private
sector
in
academia,
science,
law,
medicine,
health,
IT,
business,
Indian,
Americans,
Koreans,
Vietnamese
and
all
the
other
Asian
cific
Islander
communities
who
have
called
this
area
home.

Many
are
currently
serving
as
mayor's
elected
state
and
local
officials,
governor's
members
of
Congress
and
Senators,
so
I
have
to
say
we're
not
that
exotic.
After
all,
I'd
also
like
to
recognize
moving
forward
now
into
the
21st
century.

century
I'd
like
to
recognize

contemporary
Asian
Americans,
who
are
making
a
difference.
Our
community
now
I'd
like
to
recognize
first
of
all,

amazing
teacher,
musician,
singer

just
instructor.

single-handedly
taught
probably
a
hundred
thousand
of
us
in
this
community,
something
about
Vietnamese
culture
and
Vietnamese
heritage.

Braley
who's,
a
doctor
in
our
community
who
also
volunteers
with
Arlington,
rotary
I,
hope
you
still
do
and
provides
which
are
phone

stopping
a
tourist
and
provides
freedom
at
a
free

eye
screening

indigent
clients.

Texas

Florida
and
Puerto
Rico
incredible,
volunteer,
cadre
of
professionals
working
seriously
around
the
clock
to
sis
people
like
you
and
me,
caught
in
the
aftermath
of
these
incredible
hurricanes
and
natural
disasters.
I'd
like
to
finish
out
by
thanking
all
of

We
are
all
public
servants.

goes

work

the
government,
thinking
they
are
going
to
become
rich
or
famous,

all
of

have
called

Our
elders
continue
to
teach
us
and
inspire
us
and
shape
us,
so
we
must
continue
to
reach
out
to
them,
connect

them

engage
them
in

our
lives.

Opera
Group
follows
a
teaching
of
renowned
Chinese
Peking
Opera
artist,
jia
ling,
the
women
of
the
group,
Wendy
Lee
Jenifer
gone
and
gone
through
our
engineers
by
trade,
but
they
love
to
showcase
their
Performing
Arts.
The
group
has
been
invited
to
perform
Peking
Opera
in
various
formal
cultural
events
during
the
past
year,

as
Chinese
New,
Year
celebrations
and
cultural
activities
in
Washington,
DC
region,
Virginia
and
Maryland.
