Description
News show featuring people and events in Arlington County VA. In this segment, we meet a team of Americorps volunteers who are helping fight off invasive plants, restore the Four Mile Run Watershed, and provide a great example of civic participation.
A
On
a
beautiful
spring
day,
at
bonaire
park,
county
staff
were
out
working
to
clear,
Bush
honeysuckle,
an
invasive
plant
that
is
choking
out
our
native
flora.
The
threat
of
invasive
plants,
disrupting
our
natural
ecosystem,
is
one
of
the
biggest
issues
the
county
faces
in
trying
to
restored
four
mile
run
watershed,
but
talented,
as
they
are
county
staff,
couldn't
clear
all
this
by
themselves.
Fortunately,
they
have
help
in
the
form
of
a
dedicated
young
team
of
AmeriCorps
volunteers.
B
This
crew
has
been
incredible,
they've
cleared
acres
and
acres
of
land
very
quickly.
It
did
not
take
very
long
for
them
to
get
on
board.
They
jumped
right
in
very
energetic,
very
motivated.
It
didn't
take
us
a
lot
of
time
to
train
them
and
once
they're
trained,
they
are
just
off
and
running
on
their
own
in
clearing
areas
much
faster
than
anyone
could
possibly
expect
us
to
do
with
just
the
one
field
technician
that
we've
worked
with
for
the
last
five
years.
C
My
degree
was
in
environmental
science
and
I
was
looking
for
something
after
I
graduated
college,
that
was
environmental
related,
and
a
lot
of
my
friends
are
in
AmeriCorps
and
they
told
me
about
it.
So
I
found
it
off
the
state
volunteering
website
I'm
from
Arlington,
and
that's
one
of
the
reasons
why
it
makes
it
really
great
to
be
working
in
AmeriCorps
in
Arlington,
its
kind
of
boy
to
give
back
to
where
I
grew
up.
C
D
The
company
allows
people
to
take
a
number
of
volunteer
days
as
part
of
the
benefit,
so
every
once
in
a
while
we'll
do
kind
of
a
team-building
effort
and
get
together
with
a
group
of
folks
who
are
willing
to
go
out
and
help
the
community.
It's
a
great
team-building
exercise,
especially
you
know,
working
outside
with
the
parks
department.
Here
it's
a
little
physical
labor
and
a
lot
of
us
are
in
our
offices
all
day.
So
it's
a
good
opportunity
to
come
out
and
if
you
get
lucky
with
the
weather,
it's
a
beautiful
day.
