From YouTube: Newsmakers: Long Bridge Park Groundbreaking
News show featuring people and events in Arlington County VA. In this segment, the long-awaited groundbreaking for Long Bridge Park.
Of us know the history of this place, it's had a long, strange history, this site that we're standing on it was a concrete company. It was a tow and recovery field where your toad cars came was an auto storage yard, a trucking concern and a scrapyard. It's been everything that we didn't want it to be.
Yet over the last nine years, we have worked incredibly hard and I'll be mentioning some of those people that worked so hard to change that and turn it into an incredible place. That will have an incredible future right now. Fifty a hundred people gather some years down the road there'll, be thousands of people on this site daily to use the facilities that will ultimately be here.
Started as far back as 1993 when there was a dump on this site and a very complicated cleanup effort was undertaken and Tony Gardner, who was then the county manager had the vision to see that this should not be industrial property. This should be parkland in exchange for moving all that development down to the other end of crystal city, which was in railroad yard and is now potomac yard that deal laid the foundations for all of this. There.
Will be lots of other things going on here? Landscaping, picnic area raised observation area, the Esplanade, a 2,000 foot, long raised Esplanade with breathtaking views of the Potomac and the Washington DC skyline, and that esplanade will connect directly in this first phase to Crystal City and make everything that is created here, fully accessible and easily accessible to the residents and the businesses the people working and living in Crystal City. We're.
Really thrilled about that, they finally has arrived, and you know the not only people who aren't fitness, but any person wants to come and enjoy park will have that opportunity here. So this is not for one particular group or in other words for entire Arlington community. So we excited. Of course it will have a major athletic component soccer players, frisbee players, football players, fuel hockey, players. Anyone who wants to engage in healthy recreational activities will be able to do that here. So.
This is just the beginning: it's the beginning, its phase, one hopefully by next summer, we'll be using these fields, will be enjoying the Esplanade will be enjoying the rain garden, will be enjoying all of the pieces of phase one and will be beginning our launch or beginning our move toward phase two, which is a gorgeous aquatic center and fitness facility and more up at the other end of this part, I.
