A recent house fire claimed the lives of an Arlington mother and daughter. The home had no working smoke detectors. The Arlington County Fire Department urges everyone to install smoke alarms on every floor and in every bedroom. You should also test the alarms each month, and change the batteries twice a year, ideally when the clocks change. And, you should replace the alarms themselves at least every 10 years. Arlington’s Emergency Winter Shelter is now open for the season. This shelter offers men and women who are living on the streets a safe place to sleep through the cold winter months. When Doc Muse opened Green Valley Pharmacy in 1952, he provided a place where African-American customers could get their prescriptions filled and dine at the pharmacy's counter. Important to this community, even as a kid we could not sit at a fountain. We cannot get fountain coats out. We could go to the counter at people's drugstore, which was the drugstore at that time, but we could not sit on the counter in 1952 when Doc opened the drugstore.

It was the first opportunity that we had here in Virginia that we could sit down and get such things as a milkshake, a real milkshake or other things of that nature, plus doctors here to fill out prescriptions and do what- and it just became a focal point for the community- that as a kid and you grew up- and you always grew up going, the docs did our thing.

It is very important that we do not forget my our bridge builders, who paved the way from this community that at one time, was a highly neglected community to one that's now, one of Arlington's most diversified communities. This.

Particular location represents the longest african-american owned business in Arlington County, and it's really important from that perspective. It's a it's a part of our past that is I. Think, apart from the building and the building now we'll be protected. Hl RB and the Planning Commission in the county board were very much influenced by the community's feelings for this particular site, as well as its importance in the commune duck.
