For 25 years, The mission of Borromeo Housing, Inc. (BHI) is to empower young single mothers to create a self-sustaining future through education, counseling and support, while they reside in our safe home. In this way, BHI is determined to present two generations of at-risk youth with alternatives to the perils of neglect, poor education, and inter-generational poverty.
The Teen Network Board is comprised of youths form Arlington High Schools, that engage community outreach and promote the teen voice in Arlington. They participate in numerous events each year ranging from Alcohol prevention to helping with organizations like Rebuilding Together in order to help out within their community.

Virginia State officials were in Arlington County listening to public comment about a draft permit that the county needs in order to discharge stormwater into local waterways. These permits include requirements for the locality to reduce water pollution as much as possible, through a variety of programs. Arlington's current permit is now up for renewal and is the first of a new, more stringent generation of stormwater permits in Virginia in response to the continuing impact that stormwater has on local water quality, the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) project on Arlington Boulevard is replacing the aging Courthouse Road bridge. This project will improve traffic flow and safety at the interchanges on Route 50/Arlington Boulevard at 10th Street and at Courthouse Road. These interchanges were constructed in the early 1950's, are tightly spaced by today's standards, with short acceleration lanes and insufficient capacity for current and future traffic volumes.
The 10th Street and Courthouse Road bridges over westbound Arlington Boulevard will be replaced, and dedicated acceleration/deceleration lanes will be added on Arlington Boulevard, separated from the main roadway. These new lanes will improve traffic flow by managing the merge of entering and exiting vehicles.

Arlington County celebrated the completion of Phase I of Penrose Square, located at 2503 Columbia Pike. The County's newest square is 17,000 square feet and includes features that incorporate elements of Arlington's vision of sustainability:
"Echo," two-piece sculpture by Richard Deutsch
A tree-covered upper terrace with movable tables and chairs
An inner plaza with a water feature
Small gardens interspersed in the plaza, designed to provide seasonal colors
Sustainable USE OF WATER:
Bio-filtration system underneath the tree terrace to filter storm water runoff and enhance tree root growth
Water recirculation system that allows the water feature to conserve the use of water at the site
The ribbon cutting ceremony was held in front of the square's public art piece, Echo, a two piece sculpture by Richard Deutsch. As a member of Penrose Square's landscape design team, Richard Deutsch created the interactive sculpture inspired by the Three Sisters Radio Towers, formerly located near Columbia Pike and Courthouse Road.
Built in 1913 by the Navy as cutting-edge technology, the towers broadcast the first trans-Atlantic radio signal in 1915, connecting Arlington with the Eiffel Tower. They also introduced regular broadcasts of time signals -- important navigational aids for ships at sea. When National Airport opened in 1941 the towers posed an aviation hazard and were taken down.
Echo provides a modern interpretation of Arlington's significant contribution to the history of communication. The concave elliptical parabolas carved into each monolith reflect and project sound, allowing words spoken into one stone to be heard by listeners at the other. California-based artist Deutsch designs sculpture and environments using stone, water, bronze, and stainless steel. Like Echo, much of his work is marked by an understanding of space and environment and an attention to social context and history.

The Arlington Green Games is a friendly competition for commercial property owners/managers and office tenants to

against offices in the race for business gold. The highly interactive program incorporates trainings, best practices, and
technical assistance along the way. Top performers and most improved scores will be recognized by the County and
local media.
The Arlington Green Games is modeled after the highly-successful Green Office Challenge launched by ICLEI-Local
Governments for Sustainability and the City of Chicago in 2009. In its first year, more than 160 downtown office
tenants and 45 enrolled in the program. Their combined accomplishments resulted in a reduction of more than 70
million kilowatt-hours of electricity and 54,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide -- equal to removing more than 10,000
cars off Chicago streets.
The Arlington Green Games will officially launch in October 2010, in time for National Energy Awareness Month. Preregistration

Arlington is proud of its namesake, the Navy's new ship "USS Arlington." The ship will be commissioned at Naval Station Norfolk in early April. Supporters attended a reception at the Army-Navy Country Club, where they heard from the ship's commander and others about the planned Commissioning in April . A Tribute Room on board the ship will recognize and honor first responders and those who lost their lives at the Pentagon on 9/11.
USS Arlington (LPD-24), a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is planned to be the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for Arlington, Virginia, the location of the Pentagon. Like her sister ships, USS New York and Somerset, she is named in commemoration of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Steel taken from the Pentagon after the September 11 attacks will be displayed aboard.
Arlington's keel was laid down on 26 May 2008, at Northrop Grumman's Ingalls shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. She was launched on November 23, 2010, with her christening on March 26, 2011. Mrs. Joyce Rumsfeld, wife of former United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, is the ship's sponsor.
The commissioning date has not been officially announced but tentatively set for April 6, 2013 at Naval Station Norfolk.
