News segments featuring people and event in Arlington County
A
As
the
world
cup
swung
into
action
in
south
africa,
washington
and
lee
high
school
was
the
scene
for
our
very
own
special
soccer
tournament,
but
instead
of
playing
for
national
pride,
the
stakes
for
arlington's
tournament
was
the
health
and
wellbeing
of
our
children.
But
this
was
the
twice
annual.
Don't
lose
yourself
in
a
gang
tournament,
sponsored
by
arlington's
gang
prevention
squad.
B
Our
gang
task
force
was
established
in
2003,
and
one
of
the
things
that
came
out
of
the
gang
task
force
are
these
tournaments
that
started
in
2005
and
the
soccer
tournaments
target
our
at-risk
and
gang-involved
youth
to
inspire
them.
We
keep
kids
occupied,
they're
being
productive
and
at
the
same
time
we
plug
them
in
to
the
services
and
programs
that
exist
here
in
the
county.
That's
one
of
the
reasons
why
we
invite
parks
and
recreation.
B
B
We
started
having
these
tournaments
in
2005
and
we
have
have
them
twice
a
year,
one
right
before
school
ends
in
june,
and
we
also
have
a
back
to
school
tournament
in
the
fall.
That's
when
we
tend
to
see
gang
recruitment.
As
we
see
a
lot
of
kids
transition
from
elementary
to
middle
school
middle
to
high
school
and
the
more
involved,
they
get
the
less
trouble
that
they
will
get
in
and
it's
very
true,
you
know
you
increase
the
protective
factors.
You
will
decrease
the
risk
factors.
C
These
are
very,
very
important
events.
We
want
to
engage
our
young
people
and
hear
what
they
have
to
say
on
this
issue.
For
over
five
years
now
we
have
a
gang
task
force
and
try
to
engage
our
kids
and
keep
them
from
joining
gangs.
C
An
opportunity
to
exert
their
leadership
to
evolve
and
to,
at
the
same
time,
put
their
energy
into
something,
really
positive
and
constructive
and
then
have
them
develop
their
soccer
skills
too.
So
maybe
some
of
these
kids
might
be
the
next
world
cup
player
for
the
u.s
national
team.
You
never
know,
and
it
shows
that
we
value
them
and
we
care
for
them.
We
want
them
engaged
in
constructive
activities.
