Description
NewsMakers covers the 2011 Volunteer Recognition Reception on April 10, 2011 in Arlington Virginia
A
Welcome
to
this
edition
of
newsmakers
on
sunday
april
10th,
just
a
few
of
Arlington's
many
volunteers
were
recognized
at
the
county's
annual
volunteer
reception
in
ballston.
All
five
members
of
the
county
board
attended
and
spoke
about
how
volunteerism
benefits
both
the
community
at
large
and
those
who
give
of
their
time
more.
B
Than
5,000
people,
men,
women
and
children
volunteer
annually
in
arlington
county
government
programs.
They
produce
more
than
400,000
hours
of
volunteer
service
each
year.
As
one
of
the
slides
said,
volunteers
get
paid,
nothing
not
because
they're
worthless,
but
because
they're
priceless
and
someone
is
calculated,
I
think
conservatively
that
that
400
thousand
hours
represents
something
like.
B
C
My
favorite
County
what
County
event,
because
so
many
of
you
really
show
love
and
compassion
to
our
neighbors
and
I
will
tell
you
on
behalf
of
those
who
receive
the
services
that
you
so
freely
give.
They
are
really
touched,
so
you
all
have
helped
us
create
a
more
caring
community
and
we
thank
you
very
much.
The.
D
Chairman
mentioned
the
how
it
amounts
to
dollars,
but
it's
way
beyond
that,
because
you
know
all
the
difference
that
were
everyone
makes
in
our
community
and
especially
so
to
some
of
our
most
vulnerable
residents
in
Arlington
County,
that's
successful,
we've
been
with,
we
have
some
challenges
and
we
have
folks
out
there
who
need
our
involvement
do
need.
Our
participation
do
need
our
volunteerism
and
so
I
want
to.
Thank
you
very
much
for
to
everyone
for
the
work
you
have
been
doing.
You.
E
Know,
having
worked
at
a
nonprofit
organization
where
it
was
really
volunteer-based
for
many
years,
I
always
remember
that
anyone
who
chose
the
volunteer
myself
included
initially
thought
you
were
doing
it
for
the
other
people
for
the
people.
You
were
going
to
help
and
after
doing
it
for
just
a
short
while
you
realize
that
you
got
more
back
we're.
G
H
Absolutely
love
it.
You
know
it's
it's
gratifying
to
be
able
to
help
somebody
when
they're
having
a
very
bad
day,
it's
nice
to
be
able
to
give
them
some
support
and
to
take
them
to
the
hospital
or
help
them
with
something
that's
going
on
in
their
home.
You
know
what
help
them.
Maybe
you
know,
get
better
and.
E
I
think
was
Marian
Wright
Edelman
said
service
is
the
rent
you
pay
for
a
living
and
that's
what
everybody
here
is
contributing
to,
and
you
know
what
your
volunteer
everyone
tells
me.
They
start
out
thinking
they're
going
to
give
to
somebody
else
and
they
find
out
that
they
get
a
whole
lot
more
back
just
by
stepping
forward
and
giving
up
their
time.
It.
