From YouTube: NewsMakers: Arlington VA Storm Recovery Update
Description
Jack Brown, director of the Arlington County Office of Emergency Management, briefs reporters Monday on Arlington County's storm recovery efforts.
A
Just
want
to
give
you
everybody
an
update
on
the
status
of
our
response
to
the
serious
storm
that
greeted
us
late
Friday
evening.
Initially
we
had
68,000
Dominion
customers
without
power
in
Arlington,
initially
lost
power.
Currently
we
have
about
twenty
seven
thousand
customers
without
power.
That
doesn't
necessarily
mean
numbers
of
people.
These
these
are
actually
addresses
and
customers
within
a
Dominion
system.
A
I
will
say
that
the
minions
making
yeoman
strides
and
bringing
power
back
up
throughout
Arlington
I'm
happy
to
report
that
most
of
our
most
of
our
critical
infrastructure,
such
as
hospitals,
nursing
homes,
food
fuel,
those
types
of
facilities
either
have
power
or
backup
power.
So
far,
we
haven't
sustained
any
loss
of
life
from
any
heat,
related
illnesses
or
injuries.
We
have
a
about
a
dozen
crews
from
the
county
out
working
to
clear
roads
of
downed
trees,
debris
and
restore
functioning
facilities.
Just
let
you
know
debris
pickup
will
continue
for
the
next
two
or
three
weeks.
A
The
county
will
continue.
Street
can
collection,
mulch
deliveries,
tart
repair
and
roll
off
services,
while
focusing
on
the
debris,
collection,
19,
County
roads
remain
totally
blocked,
but
I'm
happy
to
say
most
of
the
major
thoroughfares.
All
the
major
thoroughfares,
in
fact
are
open
are
clear.
Relief
is
available
at
the
county's
15
daytime,
cooling,
centers,
the
boston
and
pentagon
city
malls
in
all
of
the
counties.
Indoor
pools
arlington
has
also
opened
a
24-hour
drop
in
cooling
center
at
the
walter
reed
community
center.
All
community
pools
are
open
to
the
public.
A
We've
got
social
workers
and
nurses
visiting
are
doing
welfare
checks
throughout
the
community,
focusing
on
potentially
vulnerable
residents,
including
those
in
senior
assisted
living
living
facilities.
Arlington
county's
water
supply
is
safe
to
drink.
There
is
no
need
boil
water,
Dominion's
telling
us
that
eighty
to
eighty-five
percent
of
our
customers
should
be
restored
by
tuesday
night
and
ninety
to
ninety-five
percent
by
thursday
night
some
may
not
be
restored
until
the
weekend.
A
Dominion
is
pulling
crews
from
13
States
and
Canada,
and
working
around
the
clock
to
restore
electricity
to
our
community.
The
hospitals
as
I've
mentioned
and
major
infrastructure.
High
density
residential
areas
are
the
top
priorities
and
then
they'll
get
into
the
neighborhoods.
911
service
remains
spotty
in
case
of
911
ein
11.
First,
if
you
have
an
emergency,
if
you
can't
get
through
a
911,
please
dial
are
non-emergency
number
at
70,
35,
582
222.
If
you
still
can't
get
through,
please
go
to
the
closest
fire
station.
A
We
have
additional
staff
on
duty,
24
7,
until
we
have
reliable
911
communications
to
greet
calls
for
service
and
make
sure
that
we
deploy
the
proper
assets.
The
folks
in
need.
Now
what
what
do
we
need
to
do
as
a
community?
We
need
to
pull
together.
This
event
could
last
for
several
days,
possibly
a
couple
of
weeks.
Please
check
on
your
neighbors.
It's
really
about
neighbors,
helping
neighbors
volunteer
to
transport,
those
in
need
to
county
cooling.
Centers,
please
drive
safely.
We
have
a
number
of
intersections
that
don't
have
signal
control.
A
We
really
need
people
to
slow
down,
particularly
at
these
intersections
be
careful.
We
had
a
traffic
incident
earlier
today,
where
somebody
walking
down
the
street
was
hit
by
a
vehicle
at
an
uncontrolled
intersection
and
unfortunately,
they
perished.
Please
treat
all
those
intersections
as
four-way
stops.
A
Please
throw
refrigerated
food
out
if
you've
been
without
power
for
four
hours
or
more
freezers,
if
left
unopened
and
full
will
keep
food
safe
for
about
48
hours,
if
half
full
24
hours,
please
stay
hydrated,
please
stay
hydrated,
avoiding
eating
at
restaurants
without
power,
and
please
report
your
power
outage
to
dominion
power.
While
you
may
think
it's
been
reported
that
your
particular
address
is
without
power.
That's
not
always
the
case.
Dominion
is
encouraging
us
to
report
all
power
outages.
A
So
that's
why
we've
taken
steps
to
have
others
at
fire
stations,
other
staff
at
fire
stations
to
take
calls
from
the
public,
but
that
that
will
create
a
delay
in
responses
and
I'm
very
concerned
about
that.
So
far,
we
haven't
had
any
reports
of
anybody
suffering
any
serious
consequences
because
of
a
delay,
but
it
certainly
takes
time
and
particularly
in
those
incidents
where
there's
a
trouble,
breathing
or
a
stoppage
of
breathing,
that
four
to
six
minute
response
time
is
critical.
A
So
we
want
to
make
sure
that
we
get
that
911
system
up
and
operating
as
quickly
as
possible.
It's
not
up
not
not
to
my
satisfaction,
not
to
the
county,
satisfaction
and
until
until
it
is
until
it's
up
reliable
and
we
can
test
it
and
retest
it
and
be
confident
in
that
we're
going
to
continue
with
the
plan
that
we
have
to
staff
the
fire
stations
and
encourage
the
public
to
call
911.
First
then,
the
emerge
the
non-emergency
number
then
go
to
the
fire
stations,
please.
A
If
anyone
is
suffering
from
any
type
of
heat,
related
illness
or
injury,
please
get
ahold
of
us,
so
we
can
send
help
to
you.
We
don't
want
anybody
to
suffer
any
ill
consequences
due
to
the
heat.
Take
advantage
of
the
opportunities
to
go
to
the
cooling
centers.
What
we
need
people
to
do
is
band
together
as
a
community
and
help
each
other.
The
county's
resources
are
stretched
very
thin.
I
think
we've
responded
very,
very
well.
Our
police
and
fire
department,
sheriff's
office
and
and
community
volunteers
have
been
out
there.
