Description
A segment from the NewsMakers program produced by Arlington Virginia Network featuring the 'March is Including People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Month' Proclamation Ceremony at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Ballston.
A
B
A
A
part
of
the
mornings
events
awards
recognizing
extraordinary
individuals
who
support
people
with
intellectual
and
developmental
disabilities
were
presented
under
the
theme
of
honoring.
Our
communities,
caregivers
recipients
of
the
community
caregivers
awards
were
Angela,
Benitez,
Caroline,
hot
enstein,
Brenda,
Jones,
Sandra,
McLeod,
castilla,
Fossum
and
Robert
work
recognized
with
Lifetime
Achievement
Awards,
where
Nancy
Kyle,
claffey
Judy
and
rusty
Garth
and
Virginia
Martin.
And
now
we
begin
with
remarks
from
arlington
county
manager,
Ron
Carlee.
It's.
B
My
honor
and
privilege
to
serve
as
Arlington's
county
manager
and
have
the
responsibility
for
providing
oversight
on
a
day-to-day
basis
to
the
wide
range
of
services
that
we
provide
in
this
community,
and
one
of
the
things
that
we
know
very
clearly
in
arlington,
though,
is
that
government
cannot
do
it
by
itself.
We
have
to
have
partners
like
the
washington
caps
in
boston,
common
mall.
B
C
B
It's
not
just
all
the
caregivers,
wonderful
caregivers
and
advocates
that
we
have.
It
is
the
families
themselves
that
provide
the
support,
as
many
of
you
know,
for
previous
experiences.
Had
a
member
of
my
family
with
intellectual
and
development
disability
as
well
he's
gone
now,
he
lived
well
into
his
sixties,
grew
up
in
alabama's,
my
mother's
brother,
and
he
received
no
institutional
support,
but
he
was
able
to
live
a
full
and
happy
life
because
of
the
love
that
he
had
from
his
family
to.
D
C
C
Right
now
we
are
going
to
move
into
the
portion
of
our
program
where
we
make
our
annual
awards.
We
are
doing
something
a
little
different.
This
year
we
have
two
categories
of
awards
and
the
first
category
are
the
Lifetime
Achievement
Awards,
and
then
we
have
six
awards
for
community
caregivers.
Our
first
lifetime
achieve
award
is
mrs.
C
Nancy
Kyle,
clappy
Nancy
claffey,
founded
at
the
Villa
Maria
Work
Study
Center
in
1986
to
serve
persons
who
were
leaving
secondary
school
educational
programs
at
a
time
when
there
were
very
few
programs
for
adults,
post-school
villa
maria
embraces
diversity
and
teaches
acceptance
and
pages
with
one
another.
So
I
know
I'd
like
to
call
mrs
classy
to
come
forward
and
protect
protective
kid
complying
to
be
presenting
the
award.
E
F
G
G
Brenda
and
Sondra,
when
my
daughter
was
killed,
they
were
there
for
me
like
family
from
that
day
and
till
now
we
are
very
close
and
when
my
daughter
was
alive,
she
loved
going
there,
they
treated
her.
So
wonderful.
She
was
happy
to
go
to
woodmont
and
I.
Want
to
tell
any
parent
here.
Has
a
child?
Would
mine
be
glad
that
they're
teaching
your
children,
but
mostly
be
glad
in
your
heart
that
they
really
care
about
our
children?
Thank
you.
G
Her
name
was
Charlie
Robinson.
When
she
was
six,
she
still
wanted
to
go
to
to
be
there.
You
know
at
woodmont,
so
they
were
really
good
to
her
and
they
showed
so
much
love
tour
and
that's
why
I
nominated
because
they
love
my
daughter
and
they
love
me
and
they
love
those
children
that
they
work
with.
That's
the
main
thing
you
know
and.
C
Last
but
absolutely
not
least,
we
have
a
very
important
award
to
give
to
Robert
word.
It
was
nominated
by
mrs.
amelia.
Thomas
robert
worth
is
the
owner
of
diamond
transportation
services
inc.
He
provides
transportation
services
to
persons
with
disabilities
under
the
star
or
metro
access
in
Arlington.
This
award
is
going
to
be
presented
by
rusty,
Thomas
and
Bruce
Weaver,
assisted
by
mrs.
amelia
Thomas.
H
It
feels
great
it
feels
it
felt
really
good
to
see
the
consumers,
the
clients
that
we
provided
transportation
to
in
the
crowd
and
to
get
the
award
from
two
individuals,
Bruce
Frederick's
and
rusty
Thomas,
who
I've
transported
for
over
20
years
and
mrs.
Thomas
and
mrs
fredericks
for
them
to
be.
There
was
exceptional,
and
you
know
it
just
was
probably
want
a
highlights
of
my
entire
career
that
they
were
there
to
that.
For
me,.
D
Diamond
Transportation
has
been
providing
transportation
to
individuals
who
have
developmental
disabilities
or
physical
disabilities
or
intellectual
disabilities,
and
that
is
a
very
important,
very
important
element,
because
for
somebody
to
be
integrated
into
the
community,
they
need
to
get
to
a
job.
They
sometimes
go
to
volunteer
opportunities,
they
go
to
recreation
opportunities
and
we
want
them
to
be
able
to
get
around
I
met.
H
It
was
involved
and
open
up
the
independent
living
center
of
Northern
Virginia
he
CN
v,
which
is
not
on
wilson
boulevard
and
he
convinced
me
to
start
providing
transportation
for
people
who
were
physically
disabled
in
wheelchair,
accessible
vans,
and
that's
how
I
got
involved.
He
talked
me
into
it,
so
I
guess
it's
been
22
years
now,
a
lot
of
the
folks
that
are
here
today,
I've
known
now
for
22
years,
so
it's
quite
an
honor
to
receive
an
award
from
them
and
I.
Also
like
to
thank
my
staff.
D
H
I
Now,
therefore,
I
Walter,
to
how
the
chairman
of
the
Arlington
County
Board
in
Virginia,
do
hereby
proclaim
march.
Two
thousand
eight,
as
including
people
with
intellectual
and
developmental
disabilities
month
in
Arlington
and
I,
urge
all
citizens,
in
recognition
of
the
tremendous
value
and
potential
children
and
adults
with
intellectual
and
developmental
disabilities
to
dedicate
themselves
to
empowering
and
including
these
citizens
in
all
aspects
of
community
life.
All
year
long
and
we
proudly
signed
the
proclamation
today.
Thank
you
very
much.
