From YouTube: Fort C.F. Smith Visitors Center Opens
Description
Arlington's Fort C.F. Smith celebrated the opening of its new visitors center with the help of some Union soldier re-enactors.
A
A
Arlington
County
was
an
interesting
place
at
the
time
of
the
Civil
was
actually
part
of
Alexandria
County.
It
was
part
of
Virginia
at
the
time
about
1500
people
are
so
lived
in
Alexandria
County.
What
is
now
present-day
Arlington
actually
voted
against
the
session.
It
was
a
pro-union
community
in
Virginia,
so
our
lento
nians
were
really
only
part
of
the
Confederacy
for
about
12
hours.
On
May
23rd
1861,
the
state
of
Virginia
held
a
vote
upon
secession.
A
The
citizens
of
Arlington,
who
were
eligible
to
vote,
voted
against
the
session
that
night,
the
Union
Army
came
in
to
Arlington
and
Alexandria
occupied
it.
So
the
history
of
Arlington
during
the
Civil
War
is
really
a
history
of
the
Union
and
the
Union
Army.
Thousands
and
thousands
soldiers
came
through
Arlington.
They
were
stationed
in
Arlington,
but
very
very
little,
combat
ram
cartridge.
A
We've
also
got
some
artifacts
on
display
and
we've
got
some
of
the
bullets
that
have
been
boxed
up
for
years,
waiting
for
this
Visitor
Center
to
open
so
that
we
can
show
them
to
the
public.
So
the
Henry
House
dates
back
to
about
1900,
and
now
it's
used
primarily
for
weddings
meetings.
Special
events
like
that,
and
occasionally
things
like
art,
shows
the
Visitor
Center
is
going
to
be
open
on
Saturdays
and
Sundays
between
10:00
a.m.
