From YouTube: Pike 200 Minutes: Arlington Cinema
Description
A series of one minute looks at the 200 year history of the Columbia Pike. In this minute, we visit one of the Pike's greatest landmarks, the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse.
A
The
year
is
1940
and
the
opening
show
at
Arlington's
new
art
deco
cinema
palace
is
Cary
Grant
and
Irene
Dunne.
In
my
favorite
wife,
originally
known
as
the
Arlington
community
center,
the
building
was
unique
in
that
a
24
Lane
bowling
alley
operated
on
the
second
and
third
floors
in
1985,
the
interior
was
gutted
and
converted
to
a
combination,
restaurant
lounge
and
theater,
known
as
the
arlington
cinema
and
drafthouse.
The
distinctive
vertical
marquee
is
a
work
of
art
in
its
own
right
and
has
become
the
premier
architectural
icon
of
Columbia
Pike.
A
Under
its
current
ownership,
the
draft
house
is
keeping
another
showbusiness
tradition
alive,
vaudeville,
music,
comedy
and
children
shows
are
interspersed
with
a
constantly
changing
schedule
of
recent
Hollywood
movies,
but
there's
one
secret.
The
drafthouse
has
yet
to
heal
how
in
the
world
could
anyone
watch
a
movie
with
a
bowling
alley
above
their
head?
