Description

November is Animal Shelter Appreciation month, and the Animal Welfare League of Arlington kicked it off in style with its second annual Golden Paw Gala. We'll tell you more about that later in our program, but first...

Congratulations to John Vihstadt, who was elected to the Arlington County Board on November 4. Vihstadt, who was elected previously on a special election, will retain his current seat within the county board. Be sure to Check our website for details on the swearing in, or call the Board office for the time and date. To learn more about all of the board members, check the county board webpage at county board dot arlingtonva dot us.

We are so proud that Arlington has met its goal of finding housing for 100 homeless Arlingtonians. The 100 Homes Campaign is part a larger national effort to prevent and end homeless-ness in our communities. To find out how you can help, or if someone you know is at risk of becoming homeless, contact Arlington's Department of Human Services.

Fairlington is getting a farmers market! The Fairlington Farmers Market will open Sundays, 9 to 1, starting in April 2015. It'll have local fruits and veggies, baked goods, dairy, flowers and more. To find the hours and locations of all Arlington farmers' markets, check our website, keyword Farmers Markets.

Ebola is dominating the news, but experts say you are much more likely to be exposed to the flu. The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get vaccinated. You can get the vaccine at your doctor's office, pharmacy, and even some supermarkets. We've got a Flu Health Map on our website to help you find a spot close to you! Go to arlingtonva.us, keyword: flu.

Dogs, cats, birds, guinea pigs... and more are waiting for loving homes at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. The Golden Paw Gala is just one way that the shelter raises funds and awareness of homeless animals in our community. Take a look. To find out how you can adopt one of the many animals in need, visit the Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s website at AWLA.org.

And a reminder that Arlington County offices, including libraries, will be closed on Veterans Day, November 11. Due to huge concert honoring our veterans in downtown DC, transportation may be affected, so you'll want to check the bus and metro schedule at commuterpage.com before heading out.

Well, that’s all for this week, thanks for watching, and we'll see you Around Arlington.
