How can you find out how many people are biking on our trails? You install a bikeometer! Our first bikeometer was installed at Lee Highway and North Lynn Street, where nearly 500,000 bikes whiz by each year. You can see how many have gone by on a screen and we'll use the data to plan bike routes and improve bike safety. While bikes whiz by on paths, data whizzes through Arlington at speeds that are infinitely faster than anywhere else in the Capital region. That's because of the ConnectArlington broadband network. It was developed by Arlington County government to link County buildings and schools together, but now we're extending that super high-speed fiber to Arlington businesses. A new study shows that Arlington can expect a huge return on its investment in the Columbia Pike streetcar. According to the report, the streetcar project will generate between 3 and 4 billion dollars in benefits for Arlington and Fairfax over a 30 year period. We're here this morning, at the arlington county, fire department, training academy that has been vastly improved through a capital project just completed most of what the public here in arlington sees by way of the fire and ems department is in response. What they often don't understand is that there is a tremendous investment in the training and preparations of those firefighters and paramedics, much of which is done here at the academy.

The improvements made over the course of the last year and a half include a seven-story training tower that is more reflective of the kind of environment we have here in arlington, county and the kind of environment that our firefighters and paramedics work in and an expanded training ground. That enables us to do a lot of the other tasks that firefighters and paramedics do on a daily basis.

So today we're going to represent here in this new setting a lot of those tasks that we do here, that we train on on a regular basis in preparation for those responses that result from the 911 calls that occur throughout the county and throughout the region. Inside.

This room is protected by tiles and fire bricks of the floors for longevity and the things that we burn, the material we burn are pallets and straw, and it provides vital training for our firefighters to experience live fire. What we're practicing here is rope rescue the rope rescue is used to access patients that are below grade or above grade. What we're showing you here is going down. It means that we know these skills forward and backwards and can put them in service at a moment's notice.

It's a huge improvement over what we've had previously. I was hired in december of 2000 and there was very limited facilities that we could use. I can come down with my company and we could train in numerous evolutions fire rescue, high angle, rescue and things like that. Just to be able to have the burn, the burn component is huge because being in a metropolitan area, we don't have the ability to burn, acquired structures and so forth. So this is a. This is a very close second to the real thing.
