From YouTube: Learning in Retirement
Description
Arlington's 55+ programs include lots of classes that keep seniors physically fit. But studies have shown one of the most significant things seniors can do thrive in their old age is to keep mentally fit. This segment highlights the many resources available to Arlington seniors to continue learning in their retirement.

Was
a
research
study
in
the
1990s
and
it
studied
people
who
had
vibrant
successful
lives
in
their
old
age
and
what
they
found
was
that
there
were
multi-dimensional
aspects
that
all
of
them
had
and
one
of
those
was
to
challenge
yourself
cognitively.
It's
really
important
to
keep
yourself
vital
is
to
learn
new
things
and
hard
things
like
playing
music
in
your
musical
instrument,
even
ballroom
dancing
thing.
If
you
play
bridge,
try
art,
you
know.

Our
decline
in
cognitive
function
comes
about
as
a
result
of
the
things
we
do.
Is
we
age
and
the
thing
about
it
is.
We
can
correct
that
at
any
age
we
have
to
work
at
it,
but
we
can
correct
it.
The
brain
is
an
incredibly
complex
thing.
We
have
about
a
hundred
billion
brain
cells
and
about
a
hundred
trillion
connections
and
as
we
get
older
and
we
stop
using
our
brain
cells
a
lot,
the
brain
adjusts
to
it
by
killing
off
those
brain
cells
that
we're
not
using
it
deprives
them
of
blood.

C
Courses
run
the
gamut
of,
but
you
would
expect
to
get
in
a
university,
but
there
are
no
tests
and
there
are
no
papers,
just
good,
collegial
opportunity
to
learn
from
experienced
professors
from
local
universities,
retired
professors
from
any
other
universities,
as
well
as
people
with
great
expertise
in
a
particular
fields,
and
the
advantage
of
that
is
they
don't
have
to
do
a
paper.
They
don't
have
to
do
it
for
credit.
They
can
come
and
learn
and
they
can
have
the
discussion
with
fellow
class
members
and
the
professor.

E
I
had
a
stroke
five
years
ago
and
I've
been
trying
to
do
things
to
keep
me
happy
and
keep
the
old
bean
going,
and
this
has
been
one
of
them.
This
one
is
along
the
Nile
River,
with
the
Sun
rising.
We
were
on
a
balloon
ride
in
Luxor,
watching
the
Sun
come
up
this
one
I
hope
you
can
tell
what
it
is,
or
the
pyramids
the
Great
Pyramid
and
the
smaller
one.
We.
B
Have
an
enormous
variety
of
programs
for
55,
plus
the
classes
pay
for
themselves
to
a
great
extent
most
of
the
time,
but
there's
still
an
infrastructure
that
is
supporting
those
classes.
But
it's
important
because
keeping
people
vital
in
their
old
age
means
they're
going
to
continue
to
contribute
to
community.
So
how
marvelous,
if
we
had
role
models
of
people
who
are
80
and
90
who
are
having
full
lives
and
being
a
vibrant
and
flourishing
all
the
way
to
the
end
of
life?
I
mean
that's
a
very
healthy
thing.
