Description
August 2016 episode of The Skinny features Jeff Moore, City Traffic Engineer with the Transportation Department, and Meg Pigman, Traffic Safety Officer with the Asheville Police Department, discussing the new flashing beacon crossing on Amboy Road.
A
Hello,
I'm
Jeff
moorim,
the
city
traffic,
engineer
and
I'd
like
to
talk
to
you
today
about
our
rectangular
rapid
flashing
beacon,
which
we've
installed
out
on
Amboy
Road.
This
is
a
new
thing
for
us,
it
is
a
pedestrian
warning
device
and
the
way
it
works
is
when
a
pedestrian
approaches
it
you
push
the
button
the
flashers
are
activated
and
that
alerts
drivers
that
someone's
entering
the
crosswalk.
A
Now
it's
not
a
regulatory
device,
there's
no
red
light,
it's
a
yellow
flashing
beacon,
so
it's
more
of
an
alerting
device
for
the
motorists,
but
it
does
bring
in
added
safety
to
the
crossing.
The
installation
of
this
beacon
was
made
possible
through
a
partnership.
We
were
able
to
get
an
encroachment
from
the
North
Carolina
Department
of
Transportation
to
install
this
because
Amboy
Road
is
a
North
Carolina,
d-o-t
maintained
roadway.
We
also
worked
with
River
Link.
A
They
installed
a
river
access,
and
this
is
an
enhancement
for
that
to
make
it
safer
for
people
to
cross
and
we
Road
to
get
to
that
access.
The
Buncombe
County
Tourism
Development
Authority
was
a
major
player.
They
worked
with
us
to
provide
some
funding
and
make
it
possible
through
a
grant
the
city
of
Asheville.
A
We
were
a
partnership
there
with
our
Public
Works
Department
our
streets,
our
stormwater,
with
lots
of
players
here,
including
Stephanie
Monson
Dahl
from
the
city
of
Asheville
riverfront
team,
the
hard
work
that
she
did
and
the
team
did
to
keep
this
project
on
track
and
the
citizens
and
the
businesses
along
and
boy
Road
that
have
come
in
to
really
revitalize
this
area.
They're
also
big
partners
and
people
are
gonna,
be
using
it
from
now
on
we're
gonna.
This
is
a
partnership.
B
Hi
I'm
officer,
Meg
Pegman,
with
bashfully
Department's,
Traffic
Safety
Unit
I,
just
want
to
make
sure
that
motorists
are
aware
of
the
new
flashing
beacon,
pedestrian
crossings
that
we've
put
in
here
on
Amboy
Road.
These
are
pedestrian
activated,
so
you
will
have
to
push
a
button
once
that's
activated,
the
light
will
begin
to
flash
and
motorists
need
to
be
aware
that
when
this
light
is
flashing,
they
are
required
to
yield
to
pedestrians
that
are
trying
to
cross
this
roadway
behind
me
here.
A
This
project
is
a
great
opportunity
for
us
to
make
this
particular
crossing
safer,
and
hopefully
it
will
be
the
first
of
many.
This
partnership
was
an
exciting
thing
for
us,
because
it
just
shows
different
groups
coming
together
for
our
common
goal.
It's
our
goal
to
make
the
experience
for
pedestrians,
bicyclists
and
drivers
safer
and
better
throughout
the
city.
Thanks
again
take
care.
