A
Asheville,
please
sighs
it
is,
is
fortunate
enough
to
have
a
lot
of
specialized
units,
and
one
of
those,
for
example,
is
a
hostage
negotiation
team
and
they
get
called
out
from
time
to
time.
Obviously,
but
when
there's
that
kind
of
a
situation,
a
barricaded
subject
or
a
hostage
situation,
basically.
B
B
Recently,
we've
had
several
situations
where
we've
been
able
to
make
contact
with,
subject,
may
be
barricaded
or
suicidal
and
spent
several
hours
talking
to
the
person
trying
to
get
the
person
to
calm
down,
get
the
person
assuring
them
that
we
were
there
to
help
them
assuring
them
that
we
would
get
them
help
and
it's
been
able
to
cause
the
person
to
feel
calm.
The
person
to
a
certain
point
to
be
able
to
come
out
come
to
the
officers
and
we
were
able
to
provide
helping
to
provide
what
services
that
they
were
needing.
A
We
also
have
a
hazardous
devices
unit
that
responds
to
calls
for
the
average
person
hazards,
devices
we're
talking
about
bombs
and
explosive
material,
and
those
individuals
are
highly
trained
through
the
federal
government
in
terms
of
how
to
handle
potential
explosives,
we
have
a
lot
of
equipment,
we
have
the
actual
robot
that
can
go
in
and
disrupt
the
device
associated
with
that.
We
also
have
a
dog
a
specialized
dog
trained
to
detect
and
smell
explosives
and
respond
to
that
and
alert
the
the
handler
that
there
may
be
explosive
device
there.
The.
C
Robot
itself,
it's
made
by
remote
tech.
It's
a
company
out
of
Oak
Ridge
Tennessee,
it's
f6a,
it's
basically
the
top
of
the
line
as
bad
as
good
as
it
gets
as
far
as
robots
in
its
primary
mission
is
related
to
the
bomb
squad
and
render
safe
fun
improvised
explosive
devices.
It
also
has
secondary
functions.
It
can
support
the
hostage
negotiations.
C
The
SWAT
component,
if
need
be,
and
also
a
hazmat
situations,
if
required,
is
specific
to
just
that
particular
instance
where
we
had
a
barricaded,
suspect
the
swat
swat
and
the
hostage
negotiations
were
were
at
the
scene.
What
what
the
robot
does
basically
has
allows
us
to
interact
with
the
individual
and
actually
approach
for
intelligence
or
surveillance
requirements
without
having
to
expose
the
individual
officers
to
potential
line
of
fire.
You
can
introduce
a
gas
or
CS.
C
If
need
be
again,
you
can
you
can
carry
on
a
conversation
with
the
individual
through
the
through
the
microphone
you
can
make
entry
even
explosive
or
otherwise,
with
the
robot
and
again,
all
that
allows
us
to
to
do
it
without
requiring
the
use
of
individual
officers
and
putting
them
in
harm's
way
for
the
bomb
squad.
Specifically,
it's
important
because
in
2009
the
FBI
and
the
Department
of
Justice
is
requiring
all
accredited
bomb
squads.
We
are
one
of
approximately
450
in
the
nation
to
have
a
robot
as
a
requirement.
C
We
have
mutual
aid
agreements
with
practically
every
county
in
the
region,
and
we've
been
in
our
nine
years
of
existence
as
a
bomb
squad.
We've
probably
been
to
every
every
county
municipal,
miss
pouty
in
the
region,
reference
improvised
devices
and
we'll
use
this
robot
again
in
the
number
of
occasions.
Any
time
we
don't
have
to
go
downrange
on
a
device
and
we
can
send
the
robot
all
the
better
for
us.
We.
A
A
So
if
we
have
a
lost
child
or
we're
tracking
a
suspect
from
a
crime,
they
can
do
that
they're
also
trained
to
detect
illegal
drugs
and
respond
to
the
illegal
drugs,
if
they're
in
and
around
on
a
search
and
they're
also
obviously
trained
to
protect
the
handler
in
serious
cases.
So
if
we
have
someone
who
has
secreted
themselves
in
a
building
and
will
I
come
out
and
they're
hiding
until
a
burglary
or
they've
broken
into
the
building,
we
can
send
the
dog
in
obviously
announced
and
ask
that
person
to
come
out
voluntarily.
A
D
Part
of
the
k-9
unit,
we
have
five
dogs
they're,
all
Belgian
Malinois,
and
we
use
them
to
support
the
patrol
division
with
patrol
division.
We
use
those
for
narcotics
enforcement,
we
do
building
searches,
we
do
criminal
apprehensions
and
high-risk
warrant
searches
with
the
dogs.
We
also
do
article
searches
for
evidence
for
items
we
find
lost
children,
adults,
Alzheimer's,
patients
along
with
criminals,
so
the
pretty
diverse
a
typical
day
like
dad
during
the
day
shift,
will
be
doing
a
lot
of
work
on
the
interstate
doing
for
a
criminal
interdiction.
D
Criminal
enforcement
will
also
respond
for
calls
for
service
any
kind
of
call
for
service
at
a
crime.
In
progress
we
go
to
whether
an
alarm
activation
a
breaking-and-entering
in
progress,
a
fight
call
the
k-9
is
always
in
route,
it's
just
in
case.
It's
needed.
It's
not
always
needed,
but
you're
a
backup
safety
for
the
patrol
division.
All
of
our
dogs
are
called
a
dual
purpose,
or
patrol
dogs
they're
all
narcotics
trained
and
for
human
scent,
so
they
all
far
narcotics
and
anything
dealing
with
human
scent.
A
When
a
department
gets
fairly
large,
you
have
to
have
specialized
assignments
because
we're
more
likely
to
have
incidents
where
we're
going
to
need
them
on
a
more
frequent
basis.
So
it
it's
worth
purchasing
equipment,
it's
worth
the
specialized
training
and
having
the
skills
available,
and
we
are
the
largest
municipality
in
Western,
North,
Carolina
and
through
mutual
aid.
At
times,
we
come
to
the
aid
of
other
agencies
as
well,
and
a
lot
of
these
groups
we're
tied
to
task
force.
