If you have problems with that um so yeah before we jump into usual items on the agenda, we always also first give a a moment to folks that joined for the first time, or maybe you just have some specific question you'd like to ask before we jump into usual um agenda items, so you don't have to wait with the answer.

Yeah, so I am I'm a cs student and uh I'm contributing to async api cli and trying to made it in a god mode. So I'm really happy to be part of this community and thanks to lucas and the team who has been building an open source culture and like adding a good value to the whole community. Thank you.

um Welcome and thank you for kind words.

um Anyone else wants to add something before we jump into the core.

A

Three two one: um okay, so first things. First, one of the agenda items is super easy to share. It's just my private advertisement, so you probably you probably saw it already but uh yeah for folks watching just the recording.

A

um If you'd like to learn how async api grew um in 2021, we just released a kind of analytics of the numbers for for the initiative, so you can check out how we grew um on different platforms.

A

That kind of indicates the the growth of the of the community. So I just pasted the link to the blog post, so you can have a look later, but basically probably just scroll and see the diagrams and the numbers and the percentage not not much sense to read my content. um So that's that's the first item from the agenda and the the second is the most important, I think, is the google summer of code and other events.

So let me just um make sure that we are all on the same page like you have the context of the topic. um So let me just share a a link um at on 7th of december. Last year, I posted a discussion item. Like a proposal for things that we could do as the as a whole group um to to scale the the size of asking api community uh because, like before working on the article I just mentioned, um I already knew that we grew a lot. So I wanted.

I was thinking about like what the activities we could take as a as a group to to scale our approach that we currently had in last year's and and make sure that we can actually handle the growth like a pro- um and there were three items mentioned in this in this proposal- for the um for, like main building scaling goals for 2022, and one of them is participating in google summer of code, but not all not only google summer of code.

A

So if you recall last year, 2021 we, it was our first time we as a organization um contributed to google summer of code by providing ideas, mentors and then enabling um folks that just started in open source to yeah, to learn uh to code, to to learn, asking api and also like do something meaningful for the project. It turned out pretty cool.

A

um As a result, we have um really awesome new community members in the group like one of them is on the call it's cuda, so we we want to do the same this year, but on a higher scale, um because google summer of code, it's not the entire year, it's just few months.

A

So we could try this year to do a like a full year calendar of different events where we participate and attract different contributors. So I prepared a let me share screen, maybe.

Thanks, okay, cool um so um yeah, um if I would be a designer, I would probably show it much better, but I'm not so I'm a simple excellent user. So we can see here. What's the most important in this in this timeline? Is the year months that you can see here and then on the left. You can see different activities uh different, um I'm not even sure how to name it like different organizations, different events, different.

Whatever name like you name it, um and I tried to like kind of map all the deadlines that we have to fulfill like where we can, when we can apply this as an api, uh then when really coding happens or in case of google season of docs, when when writing happens- and uh it's not like it's definitely not something final, um especially that you can see some blank months when we can fill in uh events.

um So I would definitely, if you know already some events that could go into these months.

A

um Then, let's, let's figure out like um we, have all these discussions in the discussion that I uh linked in the in the chat. uh But the most important is to notice these. um That I think, are like the most important so oktoberfest like it's happening every year, it's just one month. It's a good uh good timing to get really easy issues to fix with the community. uh We participated in it for two years in a row, and it was always like 30 issues at least solved.

Then open force. It's um it's something we did not participate in uh before it's um the so that was proposed to um to to ask api by by uh hargun. So she is one of the new contributors of asking epi and she organizes open force and it's taking place in march entire month. So it's not as big as um google summer of code, but it also is not as small as oktoberfest.

So it's a pla like we just have to provide some issues and this month so um like issues that somebody can work on throughout the entire month. So these are not issues that are easy. I would, of course, on my basic on my opinion on the difficulty of the issues. I would say it's just it's about moderate issues.

um One of moderate issues, example would be like cuda created this optimizer library and I think in one month someone could easily add um a optimizer to the cli as a as an issue for uh for open force. So then, then out reachy, that's something I looked at um because actually I'm not sure if you're.

A

If you're aware, it's always good to remind you folks that we have this important discussion here in the community about bringing more women uh into the um into the tech uh in us in the api so outreachy. I proposed outreach here um because they have a proof that and 95 of the of the mentees that apply to contribute throughout richie is woman.

A

So if we apply um and provide mentorship, uh it's a good chance that we can help more women to to join the tech um and us in api, um and there are two slots a year, one we're already late, because it's early uh january and it would anyway conflict with other. uh So the slot would and like it's. The discussion about outreachy starts after gsoc.

A

Basically, um so it's a perfect event to participate in in the second part of the year, and two very important events for now to focus on is google season of docs and google summer of code. So we will definitely apply for these, because we know we have mentors that would like to mentor.

A

I also want to contact all the tsc members if they are interested in mentoring, but we have like at least I counted six mentors or seven mentors for now already from from our side- and I bet we can- we can get more folks interested in mentoring, especially probably the folks that participate as I participated as mentees last year, so yeah google season of dogs.

uh We still have time to apply uh google summer of code. It's this month. I'm gonna figure out this week. How to do it uh like what's needed, like what information has to be provided before uh the deadline, um but again like um if you already plan to be a mentor, and you would like to mentor ideas that you have please yeah start thinking about ideas.

We already have gsoc dedicated channel on slack, so please join it. We already have a way figured out way how to mark issues as issues for g-shock and last but not least, tomorrow.

Tomorrow, they'll there will be dedicated.

Yeah- let's figure out like um so something to add something that maybe some of you folks don't know like last year, when we applied for google summer of code, we were not actually accepted assassin api, but when we applied, we were not yet part of linux foundation, um but we managed to go get into google summer of code um because postman was apply. I was accepted so a few of us work for postman.

So that's how we bypassed the um hacked the system- let's say, um but this year we're gonna try up to apply again as an api, and I think by proving how how useful we are for the for the event. I hope that they will accept us. But again, I already know that um um we can use the back the postman back door again if we, if we need it uh this year um and for google season of dogs um alejandra, we don't.

I don't know any backdoor like any any like um different solution in case we would not be accepted as google season of docs, so we probably have to like research, maybe.

Oh, um I have a friend a really good friend in google cloud developer relations and I think I know a few other people in google. So I can just message them and you know basically bother them to death until they give me all the information um I might learn about more tricks. Maybe.

Yeah, I do have a question um yeah, so the question is: okay. Are we also having to like planning to have async api hackathon on the timeline of this particular schedule?.

um You mean the hackathon, like we did last year, yeah exactly um so yeah. um I don't know anyone at asking api, let's say initiative among tsc members who would lead this topic um so last year I pushed for having a conference combined with hackathon, but um this year I'm not I'm not pushing. So my full, like me personally, my full focus is on the conference itself. So at the moment there are no plans to to the.

The do they do the hackathon, but the thing is it's like: I think api is community driven. So if, if there's interest- and um I actually liked the outcome of the of the hackathon from.

Thank you for distracting me alejandra. uh So, um uh just to summarize, the uh the topic uh tomorrow is the live stream, uh where we will uh answer in in details like about every event like what really open force is what kind of issues we need to prepare. As as um as maintainers, um there will be more detailed discussion about google summer of code like what rules we are um we agreed on in the in the channel.

um So it's basically um a session where we will discuss all the things and then I will also um create some kind of information for maintainers, um so they can like yeah, join and and participate as well as as mentors, because I don't think we will have issues with with candidates as mentees, because there.

Yeah, so just a question they're like are we planning to have some moderators or pocs, where my contributors can reach out for different projects that will be putting in open force 2022.

Yeah, so the when last time when I talked with harun about the and this event, what I've heard is that we could um avoid being in the discord channel um and provide like as an alternative, provide just our slack, and that would be my that would be my at least preference as a maintainer to not just go to another channel. At least I'm not using this.

But but if there's someone who could like always be there and uh who's experience with discord, the most important is, I think, um uh and and can like uh be there just to tell people okay, if you're asking about asking api go to this slack, then it would be yeah that would.

So we we don't have any delegate delegate but yeah if it comes to the whole organization from our side, I'm definitely uh if there's no one else, I'm taking the responsibility here.

Stop sharing so the last topic from my agenda also super important is the the conference this year conference.

A

Yeah how where to start even like it's a huge topic, um so so, basically, like last year when, during the conference, the online conference, we surveyed people um 70 something percent of folks answered, they would like to have an event that is like a hybrid event, so online and in person, um and I think it's it's at this stage like when.

A

Like me personally last year, I was, I was not I didn't like to have in person conference, because kovit was still at a stage where it would not be fair with with other folks from other countries, um but I think that this year it's it's getting like yeah.

A

I don't want to say that it's getting better with coffee, uh I don't think it's predictable, um but um but I think we can try to make uh to organize the event and the in-person event um and the the the biggest problem here is- and I had initial call with um one person from linux foundation and the biggest issue we have here with organizing in person event is that we don't really know how many people will will really come.

A

So it's um you can imagine organizing in person. Even it's it costs um and um so definitely doesn't make sense to organize, even for 2000 people, for example, um and so there is a let's say, a a not green light. You say like it's a white light in the in the tunnel, um so there is an option for us to combine as async api event from odd with other linux foundation. Events.

A

So in september, linux foundation organizes in the in europe in dublin, organizes a event called open source summit and they do it uh 13th to 16th of of september. I just send a link in the chat.

A

And- um and we could like, because they already have a venue rented and they have, and so they could like.

A

um We could like um pay less, because we would uh use the same venue but like two days before the event, so um we would basically have an event on sunday and monday, um so it would be attractive uh for two reasons like it's cheaper and it's um like, like we all like in asking api, we're trying to be very strong in open source like um like fix some things with open source that we don't think are are good.

A

um For example, the way we handle the open governance and um kind of makes sense to combine us also with an open source summit and might be that people that go for open source summit would also decide to actually come earlier and uh come to us in api conference, especially the contributor summit, that we would combine with the event.

A

So that's something to um that's something to uh to consider the problem. Is we don't have much time to decide so.

A

As far as I know, there are other initiatives like ours that know about this option, so the organization that um decides first wins basically and oh yeah, and the interesting fact about this venue is that we would have 150 spots and it's one uh one big large room. So it's it's a an event that keeps people closer. Like um I mean it's, not that you have three tracks and people are lost in corridors, but it's actually one one track um and I'm not sure.

What's your experience with with conferences, but there's one conference that I attend every year in poland, and it's done like this and it's the best event ever because it's uh like it's much easier to to meet people and talk to them after talks.

But yeah um like what do you think like how we can because I'm like, I was thinking that we could um like using our newsletter subscription. Maybe we could send a a survey to to folks that subscribe to newsletter asking them if they would be interested within person event and also if the the timing is good for them to like, because otherwise, how do we decide like if we should combine with them, like um you know what I'm trying to uh what I'm asking for, like?

Basically um it's tuesday and let's say friday, we want to send them information that we're joining them like, what's the best way to to make a decision about it. What do you think.

um As an initiative, were you hoping to talk to them as a sponsor, or were you hoping to submit talks on behalf of a sync api or or how exactly um I feel like? I lost that.

Sorry, so it's it, it would be totally different like it would be as an api conference. It would be branded as asking api conference.

um It's just that it would be um in the same venue um just two days before the event, so um it basically just means that we are it's cheaper for us and and that's and that's that's it.

So that's the only reason why we should consider them as an option to not like to not organize the first in-person event like fully on our own uh using our budget, but do it uh with uh with this uh with this event, but it's asking api conf. It's like um it would be like sunday monday as an api, conf and then tuesday, wednesday thursday, it's open at open source summit um and I'm not sure if they would might be that they would um like advertise it somehow like cross advertise like yeah.

If you want to join us in dpi, conf, keep in mind that two days later, we have another event in the same location, for example,.

All this time, I thought that we were trying to decide if we wanted to apply and go to the open source summit in europe. So.

No, no, no! So it's it's um like, I don't think we ever will like discuss if we should go there as speakers like it's individual, let's say for for contributors to apply.

If it comes to sponsorship like if we can sponsor them like, I don't think we have large enough budgets to uh to to spend money as sponsors, but it's mainly like to to join them um to just lower the cost of organizing the conference um like it's it's because it's gonna be much cheaper because they will have already uh they will already have the venue they will already have the catering, at least in polish. We say cuttering like the foot delivery for the even.

They will uh already have um answers on how about technicians that will handle the the conference probably streaming as well. So it's going to be much cheaper to use these services if we simply combine it like.

To have that overview, written down like exactly which benefits? Do we gain from, for example, selecting something like that.

uh It's not written down anywhere. I can write it down. Definitely.

So definitely, depending on how we decide to vote, let's uh I'll make sure that we have it cleared out in the voting process. Yeah um we will and there's a question in chat will there's where they sponsor travel and accommodation for international folks.

I meant uh the linux foundation, like the linux, open source summit like so, are they also sponsoring it? Apart from like cutting the what you said, the food delivery.

uh No like so we so it's um so how to explain like okay, so in linux foundation, you have a, I don't know exactly: what's the name of the department or the team, but there's an event team, let's say so. There are folks that are like um their job is to organize events like if, if you go to the portfolio of linux foundation, events like there's a there's a lot of different ones and and there's there are like folks that handle that and they have deals with different venues in different countries.

So they know where to organize uh conference in uh like cheaper, um depending on on the on the size.

Of the event so but.

Basically like because we like, we don't know how many folks will come and we need to have some like limits and also like save on costs. The thing is that they, just they, the the the folks behind linux foundation, event team. They will just uh together with open source summit, the work they do for open source summit. They will combine it with work for asking api conf. So it's.

Are not sponsoring uh travels? It's it's more about like sharing costs, so we anyway assassin api. We will have to pay a few thousand bucks. Definitely, but it's gonna be much less than if we would have to organize it on our.

um I think we can just ask first that, whether it's to be online or offline for current audience, in the slack current coming slack community and based on that, we can proceed further.

Already decided like that, it's a combination more or less.

uh No, that's the like. We don't have to do combined event like um like, we can be ambitious uh and we can still try to organize it. On our own, like we planned on canary islands, um we were pretty successful in in getting money from the sponsors for the online event and I think for in-person event. We can collect more money um because in in person event we can have like sponsored stock. We can have some booths and other things that.

That would enable the uh the sponsors to like give more money in in favor of this of these benefits. So we can try to like. We can try to be bold um and and try to organize it on our own. Definitely, but it's it's just gonna be harder for sure. For the first time.

It's hard to decide without really knowing the number of people that will come, yeah, yeah, definitely and in and like even even if we really send a survey uh to all the folks like. Let's say that are subscribed to the newsletter and people will answer. And uh but we still are not really sure how many people will come really.

Exactly and also we don't need a hundred folks attending or more than hundred thousand two thousand right like.

Right, yeah! That's why, like so, for example, I'm I'm a fan of this approach with open source summit because, um like the, I don't think anyone expects from us like at the end like asking api, it's an open source initiative right, so we're not selling anything. So we don't have to have like successful event with thousands of people and whatever revenue. um I don't think we should even like assume that we earn something on the even uh we should like the the best is.

If we balance like the the costs, uh I'm not sure how to say those words in english. I'm not good in talking about budgets but, like you know that we have some spendings, but the income from the tickets, for example it like we're balance zero. You know what I'm trying to say.

We're not losing um so.

Me, like the open source conference like the like for us, it's it's investment in the community like giving back to the community and not something that we want to earn money on. So um it's okay. I.

Think so to do it yeah. I was also thinking for more about the reach that I think appear can have why online versus offline and uh agreeing to that uh what you said just now, yeah.

Yeah, but just remember it's hybrid approach, that's what community voted up for, so it will be both um online and and in person. So they're, um like linux foundation, they already already organized few events last year where they had hybrid approach. So, like um you basically have a a camera person in the room that is broadcasting live.

um We can even have a um like questions from the from the audience that is watching the event online. uh We can have them passed to the to the speaker so that these things can be covered and yeah. Definitely, I would be.

I don't think we should do only in person. Yeah.

Yeah, but definitely online will not be the same as in person like yeah. You won't have this option to talk to people um after the presentation with beer in hand or a coffee.

um Sergio wrote the other option would be to stay small like rent in small venue or a few hundreds and limit the number.

Yeah yeah yeah exactly so um so like like sergio wrote like, um um and I didn't finish my time. I thought I think like about opens or something like um have it on lower cost as much as possible and 150 spots. I think it's it's really enough. um It's really enough to at least see the interest.

huh Yeah definitely poland would be a nice place.

But dublin is, I recommend as a place to go for a conference.

And definitely not my village.

I think we're at the stage where exactly we have to do something small uh one uh once a year and then scale next year's- and I was thinking like that- we should look basically on the on the amount of people that are in the community active in the community and then try to estimate like like if like um like, for example. What I see, um let me maybe explain it differently, like from my experience.

What I see is that, like um the most active like the most uh active folks in the community, the most contributing folks in the community, it's uh it's europe and india, um and then, of course, we have a few folks from from americas. uh We have a few folks from from africa um and um and but yeah, mainly it's it's uh europe and india.

So I, for example, assumed that the conference should not go anywhere else like it, and it should definitely not be organized in in in anywhere in america because doing it in europe or india. We can be much more confident that more people will come, especially if we have one of the conference day is a contributor summit.

So do you think which, when do we need a a dedicated conference meeting? Or I think it's? Okay. If we use uh the this public meeting, because we already have it scheduled every two weeks and we can always have like 20 minutes slot or something to talk about conference. What do you think like.

It just depends on how complex we want the conference to be, because if you want, for example, let's say yeah, let's say you want to schedule or not schedule but create something where users or participants of the conference can use async api in something like playgrounds, and you can do this or this and whatever it might be. That needs a little bit more preparation than just a conference.

ah Okay, so let's do it like with uh spec 30, I would say where we choose to do it every two weeks and then we check, if it's enough, so what like. So let's just make sure that every two weeks, whoever is interested with the conference, just remember that we have this community meeting where we can sync and in the month, if we notice it's, it should be separate, dedicated meeting at one hour fixed, not like this community meeting. Then let's switch.

The only tip and trick I can tell you is I applied for google season of dog a few years ago with different projects. We failed, and I know that we failed because they ex one of the factors they take into account when they choose organization, is how how happy the organization is to apply. Basically, so we, when we applied, we had no blog post about it.

We had no dedicated, um like um q and a website where people could learn everything about our application to google and season of docs, um and they pointed it out in the feedback like they said, like uh others have dedicated blog posts like articles about like why asking api wants to be in google season of dogs, what we offer, etc, etc. Like a proof that we um that it's something special for us, which is but yeah.
