Perhaps you currently own or support Drupal 7 sites, and you don't see Drupal 8/9 as a good fit for them moving forward. Maybe you are simply happy with Drupal 7, and for whatever reason you are not ready to make the move any time soon; at the same time, you may be concerned about the fact that Drupal 7 will become EoL by the end of 2021. If you see yourself in all these cases, then this session is for you!
Join me to find out how Backdrop is like Drupal, as well as how it differs. Lets discuss about why Backdrop is viewed as the continuation of Drupal 7 (a long-term support version of it if you like), while at the same time comes packed with many of the features that Drupal 8 has to offer + many new, unique features. I personally call it "D7 on steroids", as it comes with features and sensible options out of the box, which save site builders time. It also includes many admin UI fixes and improvements that make working with it less annoying :)
I plan for this to be a hybrid presentation/demo + open discussion; happy to discuss all the why's and the how's, so feel free to interrupt and ask anything you want to know about Backdrop CMS.
The Backdrop community has been very busy working on the CMS since 2015 when we forked from Drupal 7, and I plan to showcase all the new features and the UI/UX improvements we've added over the years.

The layout system in Backdrop CMS is a powerful tool for site builders and developers to position their content and customize their sites. Recently, Backdrop added flexible layout templates that allows users to create their own custom layout templates directly in the UI.
In Backdrop CMS site builders are able to assign specific layouts to each type of content or even to specific pieces of content and move specific fields (elements within each piece of content) to the region or their choice.
For those coming from Drupal 7, the layout system is a major change and requires some adjustment in thinking. We'll walk through the basics of how it works and how it compares with other CMS layout systems.

You have a perfectly good Drupal 7 site that does everything you need it to do, but Drupal 7 is nearing its end-of life. If you haven't considered moving to Backdrop CMS, you may be surprised to learn that Backdrop could be your most affordable option -- especially if you've invested heavily in custom code.
Come watch a live upgrade (not a migration) of a Drupal 7 website to Backdrop CMS. You'll get a chance to experience everything that is familiar after the upgrade, and see some of the areas that have been improved. We'll also cover some of the similarities and differences between the Drupal and Backdrop
communities.

Come see Backdrop CMS in action.
This session will demonstrate some of the kinds of things you can do with Backdrop core alone. We'll walk through site-building tasks that showcase some of the differences between Backdrop and Drupal, but mostly you'll see how similar the two projects are.
We'll build a Content type, add Fields, set up Views, and more importantly, show some of the things you can do with the shiny new Layouts system. We'll demonstrate some of the features more recently included in core, and point out some of the many usability improvements as we go. At the end of the session we'll dig into the new Configuration Management system, and use it to deploy our changes from a local site to a Pantheon site.
Have questions about something specific? Bring them!

Backdrop CMS is the Drupal fork. It is a faster and less-complex version of Drupal 7 with more features you want, and fewer you don't.
This session will highlight the Backdrop Mission, it's intended audience, and it's guiding principles.
We'll explain the decision making process, introduce the Project Management Committee, and expand on how the project's direction is set by the needs of the whole community.
We'll cover topics like how we handle Security and Stability, and talk about how we're trying to decrease the cost of long-term website ownership.

Backdrop CMS is the Drupal fork. It is a faster and less-complex version of Drupal 7 with many of the top 50 Drupal 7 modules included in core. Backdrop also includes proper configuration management for quick and easy deployment of settings changes along with code.
Backdrop CMS has been out for more than 3 years, and has seen 9 on-time releases that have added more new core features - including a few you won't find in Drupal 8 (yet). Backdrop core includes built-in automatic URLs, page redirects, and a tool for adding new modules directly from your existing site. Backdrop also includes an updated administrative theme, a new front-end theme, dozens of User Experience improvements, and improved APIs for developers. Plus, Backdrop has a dragon!
Backdrop is an affordable alternative for upgrading existing Drupal sites. Backdrop will always provide an upgrade path (via update.php) and maintains 80% code compatibility between major versions. Decreasing the amount of time spent on development, maintenance, and upgrades will help keep costs down. Backdrop CMS is committed to making sure the small to medium sized businesses and non-profits have a full-featured and powerful CMS too.
Come and see if Backdrop CMS is a match for your next project!

Backdrop CMS: What I love about it as a site builder. How is it different from Drupal 7 and 8.
Room: Doghouse Agency (Level 2)
Fri, 28-Oct, 11:30
Intermediate - Building
Grigorios Netsas
I was first introduced to the world of Drupal about 7 years ago when I started building a website for my own business. I have been a member of the community ever since and I am known in d.org as klonos. I mainly hang around the issue queues helping triage issues as well as providing guidance to newcomers. I enjoy testing new features, trying to "kick the tires" and find bugs. I then return to the issue queues either to report the bugs or (recently) to file pull requests fixing the issues. Site building is not my primary means of income - I am a Computer & Network Engineer by trade. In fact, I simply build small sites for friends and family and some of my customers. I consider myself just a CMS enthusiast. Others prefer to have a beer over barbie while watching footie in their free time. I do Drupal and Backdrop. That's my thing.
I have been following the Backdrop CMS project since the first week the fork was announced and at some point a few months ago I was nominated to become a member of the Project Management Committee, representing the non-coder, site builder part of the community. I am thrilled to hold such an important role and although my time is very limited, I have made a promise to try my best to be worthy of this great honor.
During this session I will talk about and demonstrate to my fellow site builders all the new features and user experience improvements that we have implemented over the past couple of years. I will also talk about our roadmap and about the ideas that we have to improve Backdrop. I will explain how things are different in Backdrop compared to Drupal 7 and 8 and will be more than happy to answer any of their questions as time permits.
If you are a beginner to intermediate site builder with some experience in Drupal and would like to explore ways to make your life easier, this session is for you. Also, if you already own a Drupal 7 website and are concerned about the end of support after Drupal 9 is released, but at the same time you do not have the budget, time or energy to upgrade to Drupal 8, then also this session is for you. Come join us.

Backdrop CMS is now 4 years old. Since its first release on Jan 15th, 2015, what has changed?
Is Backdrop substantially easier to use than the Drupal it was forked from? Is it more affordable to support? Are the apis you know and love, still stable and functioning as they were? Is the community growing and healthy, or better yet, is it thriving?
If you haven't been following along with all the improvements to the software and community, this session will give you a good overview of where things are today. We'll cover all the major new features that were added in every on-time release, as well as point out when infrastructure and community tools were put into place.
A fork happens when one thing ends up going in two different directions. Come see our new direction!

Jennifer Lea Lampton has been building websites since 1997, and participating in open-source communities since 2006. She maintains several open source projects, and contributes reviews and fixes to many other projects as it relates to the needs of her work.
Lampton is a very active member in the Drupal community. Not only does she contribute code, but she helps foster community too. Lampton has served as one of the lead organizers for the largest free Drupal event in the world, the Bay Area Drupal Camp (also known as BADCamp) since 2007.
After spending years developing course material and teaching hundreds of people how to use Drupal, Lampton's primary focus became making the software both easier to use ("usability") and easier to learn ("learnability").
In an attempt to make Drupal 8 easier to learn, Lampton spent almost 2 years as the Drupal core 'Twig' initiative lead. After Twig was committed to core, Lampton noticed the rest of Drupal continuing to shift away from the grasps of the average web developer, and decided to shift her attention to Backdrop CMS.
Backdrop stands between Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 including features comparable to Drupal 8 with the familiar code style of Drupal 7, and an increased focus on usability. Backdrop removes complexity that only benefits the 1%, making the system easier to learn, easier to use, and also more performant for the 99%.
As Drupal becomes the tool of choice for the enterprise, Backdrop remains for everyone else. With a focus on affordability, usability, and performance, Backdrop will fill the widening gap between Drupal and WordPress.
